Ooh! Exciting! Who was it? Did you catch the bouquet? Were there nice dresses.

[sigh] Ahh... always the brain in the jar, never the blushing bride!

My cousin was the bride. They neglected to throw anything...

What?!! A wedding where nobody throws anything at anybody else?!?

Still, I guess the couple have the rest of their married lives to make up for that!

[Drum roll and cymbal crash!]

Like this one?

'Hey, Harry, what's that smell?'

'It's this show. It stinks!'

Okay, okay. I'll stop now.

Just set me thinking how truly great comedy is pretty thin on the ground these days. Most humour on TV and radio now is pretty crass or just plain crude.

Whatever happened to the classic stylings of folks like the Marx Brothers?

And in the UK, we have Harry Hill, a man whose comic genius has reduced me to tears of uncontrollable laughter many a time. And he's COMPLETELY clean.

Mind you, I can't really talk. I mean, this week the funniest thing I saw was a DVD commentary on Bubblegum Crisis. Two of the voice actors were asked about their roles as anime VA guys, and they completely failed to take it seriously. They ripped on the plot of Bubblegum, made fun of the show, offered alternate voicover parts to key scenes (including one short section where Mackie Stingray suddenly became Eric Cartman from South Park) and littered the commentary with some pretty ripe innuendo.

I'll confess. I chuckled. Like a pixie.

I'm such a bad man.

Oh, you know it. All the way.

If in doubt, pull out a poop gag. A guaranteed snicker every time. Even if it IS a slightly awkward one!

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-09-29 14:15:52 +0000 UTC]

It's all about getting the laughs with these people.

Here's a great gag somebody told me a while back. Almost nobody ever gets it though:

'A while back I had to tell my stable boy off for philosophising aloud in the stables. I felt he was putting Descartes before the horse.'

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-09-29 23:10:26 +0000 UTC]

D'oh! [faceslap!]

How about this one, then:

'I was eating in a new restaurant the other day when another guest attacked me.

He approached me and aggressively threw a prawn cocktail at me. Then he fixed me with an intimidating stare, and said: 'And that's just for starters!''

Or this:

'Yesterday, I was mugged by a cripple in a camouflage jacket. He better sleep with one eye open - he can hide, but he can't run!'

Or this:

'Did you hear about the amputee who lost his mobile cellphone? Now, on a cold day, he sometimes thinks he can still hear it ringing.'

See? You can do bad taste without being smutty!

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-09-30 02:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, true. But I do think that these days, you can only barely crack any jokes without fear of offending somebody.

Come to think of it, does anybody really worry about offending anyone anymore when it comes to comedy?

CrazyLogic In reply to hde2009 [2009-09-30 15:33:16 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-09-30 17:00:04 +0000 UTC]

I kinda wonder at that. I sometimes think that some folks will accept anything somebody says from a stage or TV screen unless somebody else tells them they shouldn't.

Case in point: In the UK, we had a comedian called Bernard Manning. The guy was infamous for his sexist, racist vein of humour. There's no two ways about it - a large chunk of what the guy came out with on stage was out of order. A lot of it wasn't even funny. Eventually, he was pretty much disbarred from appearing on TV in this country.

I speak to a lot of people who are aware of Bernard Manning. And they know his reputation as a vulgar comedian. But they don't know his repertoire. They've made a right decision to look down on his type of 'comedy', but they've really let the vocal moral majoity make it for them.

Raise the question: Are they really capable of deciding what is decent and what is not all by themselves?

Deep, huh?

Ah, I know the feeling. I've been working on so much stuff lately my reading pile has been getting bigger and bigger!

I got the 'Surrogates' graphic novel ahead of the film coming out, expecting I'd get a chance to read it through before I saw the movie. But I haven't touched it! It just sits there on the shelf, taunting me...

Ah, nice little mix of things there. I've never been into Marvel stuff - superheroes never did it for me on any level. But I (mostly) dig the Halo stuff they've done.

I had the hardback copy of Halo: Uprising on order for the longest time - when it arrived I whipped through it. Really good read!

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-10-04 22:58:55 +0000 UTC]

Ack! You missed out!

By not by much. I played Halo 2,and I've participated in online games at a friend's place. It's fun and diverting, butthe story isn't all that compelling.

Uprising was a good read though - it referenced the game in just the right way.

Hard to read the comic when you don't know the story.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hde2009 In reply to CrazyLogic [2009-10-06 18:16:19 +0000 UTC]

In a way, that's my point - everything you need to know to enjoy the story is right there in the story pages. It's basically: Aliens invade. Guy in green armour fights hs way through alien mothership. On Earth, civilians get caught up in the conflict.

It was written by Brian Michael Bendis, probably worth mentioning. Had some very nice artwork by Alex Maleev. I really like what he does.

I'd do your research into it first - it may not be your cup o' tea. But I sure liked it!

What you definitely DON'T want is the 'Halo Graphic Novel' - that should have been great. But in practice... umm...
