I also have this resources thingy where I collect useful infos maybe you want to take a look at some of it ^^Β nyamesiss.deviantart.com/art/H…

Thank you! I'm sure that'll come in handy I'm extremely interested in how you color your works. Actually, if you look at my gallery, you'll see that I could definitely use some improvement in that area.Β Β I've watched some speed paints and have read through tutorials of how other people color, but when I try to copy them, it ends up looking like a little kid found a tablet and wanted to try painting his back yard. So I'm very interested in how you pant your landscapes, and I'm sure from there I can move on to different subject matter. I'm just at a loss with the whole color thing.

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-13 21:43:36 +0000 UTC]

well if its colouring landscapes you ve got to keep a couple of things in mind

like the fogginess in the air far away things seem lighter and less saturated than close things which seem darkened and more saturated.

for colours I have different approaches (I'm still searching my favorite way of working so its always different)

some interesting things might be colour picking from photographs (try find ones with nice palettes -- it can be anything from environments to fashion photos )

other things to keep in mind is contrasts - complementary colors can give nice highlights on certain elements.. but you can also do this with brightness contrasts

I'm guessing you know some of the basics of the colour wheel? like which colours blend into which secondary ones? they give nice transitions

Sometimes its nice to just use colours agressively (like lots and lots) and sometimes just monochromatic or limited colour palette

basically theres a lot of ways to make it look interesting ^^'' I'm not really a pro at this stuff but those are some things I keep in mind hope it helps? ;U;/ wahaha~

actually I dont really think about what I do haha but well eue thats just me?

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-14 00:48:46 +0000 UTC]

I never imagined the idea of getting (or even pre-determining) a pallet from anything else. It seems like it would make coloring a whole lot simpler. I'll have to try that out on my next attempt.

By the way, do you use all of your brushes on full opacity, or start with a lower opacity, then work upwards? And do you layer colors from darkest to light (as if trying to make a 2d painting "3d"), or do you start with an intermediate and go from there? I'm trying to determine which is the best, most efficient way.

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-14 10:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Hehe well we all gotta explore new stuff right I haven't tried everything just yet either.

I mostly use brushes with around 80% opacity so that it fills a lot but you can still get some difference with your pressure settings this is just personal I know a lot of artists have different prefs so you should just see what you like best.

I mostly begin with a midtone, as this give you the ability to go both up and down in terms of lighting/shading In simple works like sketches and doodles I can go both ways though since I'm still busy finding my preferences :3

\o3o/ good luck colouring and stuff ^^/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-17 23:38:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'll have to try that out. I usually start on the mid tone, as well. I'm trying to find a good way to cut my work time down. I really don't have the patience for 4 hours per painting, but I suppose that if I like the project enough, it's worth it. Thanks for your help!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-18 10:24:31 +0000 UTC]

hehe true with the patience thing I think cutting time isnt such a good idea though, speed comes with practise. And well if you feel like you're working on something good you should try and spend more time on that one work I've always been a bit of a lazy bastard in the art thing and never get past the sketching phase, but I recently started refining works and the results will be a lot more satisfying 8D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-18 21:35:39 +0000 UTC]

That's actually really true. I started drawing a picture of my friend a while ago, and I think I may finally finish it tomorrow. It looks all right, I think it's pretty accurate, but I still need to be able to learn how to transfer proportions from picture to paper. I could use the grid method, maybe. Either way, I got a commission out of working on it (somebody saw me working and liked it), so I guess I'm doing something right.

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-18 21:44:13 +0000 UTC]

haha well its always nice if someone admires your work kinda keeps you going and makes you wanna get better (at least I do)

I think the main reason why I still draw is because DA people kept supporting me (even though I wasn't that good hahah) so yeah.. I'm still here now :3 and there's still a lot of nice people in this community ^^/

so the best we can do is just support eachother

so go for it xD rock the commissions~ and maybe you'll score another right?

Yeah!

Thank you so much for helping me! I'll keep studying and stuff so that I can get really good as well I mean, I'm all right right now, but I want to be even better. Have you ever heard of RHADS? I wanna be able to paint like him, but I also want to do cartoonish stuff as well… Better get working, then, huh?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-18 22:05:09 +0000 UTC]

ah yes I've seen his stuff before.. and yes its nice to be able to do multiple styles

I know painting is a bit harder to learn since you've got to take a look at the fundamentals to really rock that style xD

cartoon art will be a piece of cake when you master painting I think :3

though you'll get lazy, because painting is so much faster if you get used to it :3 (lineart is a real pain when you think about it)

.. uhm yeah thats just my opinion hahah xD (I only lineart in traditional art.. but I dont really get past sketch phase anymore at that :s)

Keep going yeah~~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-18 22:09:16 +0000 UTC]

I've become so dependent on lineart that it's hard to do anything without it I'm working on that, though! I should probably use more reference photos

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-18 22:22:21 +0000 UTC]

hmm honestly.. I think I was really attached to my linearts too.. :T can be pretty scary to let go of it (and my work looked like crap at the moment I did..) but well you just gotta press on xD

I mostly still do a rough sketch though. Then underpaint it with color, then overpaint it and render the details

so you could kinda do that .. with your lineart as the sketch since a good sketch is a safer way to go with than just rough scribbles --not knowing where it may lead you--

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-18 22:49:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm working on something right now that was inspired by your mermaid, and I think it's going pretty well! No lineart or anything, just blue and shades of purple It'll be cool, I think

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-18 22:56:13 +0000 UTC]

you don't have to quit lineart immediately o3o but well just experiment if you feel like it yeah

I'd be interested to see what you make of it hah ^^b

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darcybabs In reply to Nyamesiss [2013-11-18 23:27:26 +0000 UTC]

I'll always have lineart to resort to, should I want it, but I think that the earliest I can start really learning how to separate myself from it, the better. Either way, it's coming along! I'll post the finished product when it is in fact finished

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyamesiss In reply to Darcybabs [2013-11-19 10:34:15 +0000 UTC]

hehe yes lineart is a good thing to master too

and its not per se neccesary to ditch it as soon as possible.

It might sound boring but to practise some of the fundamentals (perspective/shading/colours) is actually what makes stuff look good so it may be smart to focus on that stuff first. (I never spent time on that at first which is why my improvement was really slow hehe~ you do have to push yourself to do it at the beginning though)

and yes show it when its done
