I have come to the conclusion that if Irene and Sherlock were canon, I wouldn't mind even though it debunks any chance of Sherlock and John.

Actually, I think the main reason behind his derision in the third episode was, oddly, jealousy.
Look at the look on his face when Jim first appears in the door. He doesn't look too happy with Molly, and especially not with him. And he seems genuinely surprised when Molly doessn't take the news that her boyfriend is gay well. He's awkward with people, so in a way, that may have been him trying to save her pain, as he claims, or even out of jealousy, since he's never been nasty directly to her before this point, always making sure she isn't aware that he doesn't care about the part in her hair. This is also obviously partly manipulation, but still. This is the first incident in which he is actually mean to her to her face, and perhaps he doesn't quite mean to be, ironically, unlike other times.

Perhaps. The third episode I agree he's nicer, but I'm not sure it's jealousy exactly. Maybe more missing one of the few people who actually seem to like him, you know? When Jim walks in, he is no longer the focus of Molly's affections. So therefore Sherlock retaliates. So yeah, while that is technically jealousy, it only counts in an odd way, because I don't think Sherlock likes Molly, or anyone (as far as he'll pursue/admit
