Hiya Planks

I know you're from the Games Graphics Design course at RMIT, you've replied to my posts a while ago in the RMIT Games club here.

Well this is my last semester at Dip. of Multimedia (Visual Art) at Swinburne TAFE (it's a one year course anyway) and my choice of the undergraduate course I want to do is still Digital Art @ RMIT.

But I want to make sure I pick the right course so I don't waste any valuable time, which is why I need your opinion on what the course is like, what you guys do in class, etc. Was it what you had expected? What can I expect from it? What's it like? It it any good? ^^ Worth giving in three years? I need lotsa detail on what it's like, because I'm still in the dilemma of whether it'd be better to do a visual art/fine art course specializing in drawing/painting instead.

Sorry for the long delay, was a bit busy before, but Digital Art or Games Graphic Design are both very interesting courses to do with a variety of subjects to do, I am not too sure what Digital Art does, but from what I see, it is all based on digital artworks with a bit of Modelling (and maybe programming as an elective) thrown in.

Currently I am doing a character rigging class which I have yet to start which would be next week. The other classes that I am doing are about the history and current trend of the culture in Media and then there is the class about using interactive media to present your information using Flash as an example. Photoshop is used a lot in this course as well, so you would get plenty of time to use your digital art skills.

The first semester tend to be a bit slow with a lot of introduction courses which can be a bit boring sometimes, but the second semester and on, it starts to get exciting later on in the year and the following year.

Hopefully you get an idea from what I have said above, but if you want to know more, feel free to ask me more questions.

Would you know if Digital Art has any traditional art classes, like life drawing for example, or anything that teaches things like anatomy, colour and composition?

Because, even though programs like Photoshop and Painter allow us to do incredible things, I believe it's not the programs that create amazing artwork, its the artist, and in this case, artists with strong traditional art backgrounds.

Think of it this way, if someone doesn't know how to draw a portrait, he or she wouldn't be able to draw one regardless of which media they use.

Right now I'm in the dilemma of whether I should do Digital Art or a fine art/visual art course.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm a digital art person I already pretty much know how to use Photoshop.
And I really do want to work on games as well

Oh well, I'll just have to drop into Open Day and check it out, a few people from the games course will be there, so I can't wait

I am not too sure about Digital Art since I am in Games Graphic design, so it would be a good idea to drop an e-mail to one of the course co-ordinators (which can be found on the RMIT website) and ask about if it involves fine art as part of the course.

Open Day also sounds like a good idea as well, feel free to ask the volunteering students questions about their course to get a really good overview of what you are expected to do if you are to enrol.
