To be honest I'm thrilled that you watched me back! Your art is spectacular! May I ask you for some advice? How did you get to your current skill level? What did your practise entail?

I sent an angel to watch over you last night, but it came back and I asked,"why?"...The angel said,"angels don't watch over angels!" Twenty angels are in your world. Ten of them are sleeping, nine of them are playing and one is reading this message. God has seen you struggling with some things and god says its over. A blessing is coming your way. If you believe in god send this to 14 friends including me, if I don't get it back I guess I'm not one of them. As soon as you get 5 replies, someone you love will quietly surprise you... Not joking. Pass this message on. Please don't ignore it. You are being tested and god is going to fix two big things tonight in your favor. If you believe in god drop everything and pass it on TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. DON'T BREAK THIS. SEND THIS TO 14 FRIENDS IN 10 MINUTES IT'S NOT THAT HARD. WHOEVER SENT THIS TO YOU MUST CARE

No worries Eric No, I don't actually, I've been meaning to sniff out other places. I'll have an in depth look at both of your suggestions in the next few days. I had a quick browse of permanoobs (and it looks promising) - I couldn't find a short description (or something) of the website's premise; do you mind giving me a rundown?

butterscotts In reply to ProjectMetanoia [2014-08-07 07:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Thx for the watch PM Both of those sites I mentioned are just general communities focused on showing off your work, seems people feel more comfortable giving critiques on those than here on DA. I think its because DA looks more like a professional gallery website than a general art forum. One thing I like about a forum like permanoobs is that you can build relationships with fellow artists and discuss each others work in larger detail. Its very helpful for improvement when there is large consensus of members telling you whats not working in a given piece, they'll even give a variety of solutions to solve these issues. But I'd say my favorite thing about those forums is that you can grow as an artist among a large number of others usually around the same level as you are, it becomes addictive trying to outpost each other with new pieces and studies. I don't discriminate on what I post on there either, everything goes in, even the bad. I believe its important to show the bad along with the good in order to see where you are at skill wise, it will also help the other members give you more accurate critiques. I enjoy posting on a number of different forums for this reason, its also kinda funny seeing a lot of the same faces on those sites as well. Hopefully I wasn't confusing in this description lol^___^

Interesting thought - I've haven't really delved into art forums, I never considered that dA would feel more formal to some!
Hahaha I can see how it would get competitive xD
Yeeah! Because dA is so large you don't too often bump into the same people by happenstance!
You're a decent salesman young lad
When I get some life things worked out I'll definitely give your recommendations a try
I was wondering why you draw? Just fun or do you want to eventually use it for an income as well?

butterscotts In reply to ProjectMetanoia [2014-08-12 13:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Though I would happily draw for fun and would do so if I didn't have to worry about money, I'm doing it to get into a design school. Mainly wanting to get into conceptual design for movies and video games, maybe with some freelance illustration work on the side. One thing is for certain though, I couldn't live without drawing or painting, it's become just a much apart of me as my arms and legs, and life without just wouldn't be the same. But yeah, when you're ready, give those a shot, I started back in 06, and I've been hooked since.

I think you'll definitely get in! You have profuse skill and potential
Hhm. Drawing used to be like that for me - like breathing. My relationship to it changed when I had to do it for my final year of school. It was so stressful and drawing became the opposite of carefree. It became something I had to force myself to do. The situation is slowly recovering. The only thing stopping me from letting it wet my appetite again is my new bad habits. I'm a few years out of school now - my 'gap year' involved plenty of lazing around, gaming, reading and consuming philosophy podcasts. My second year 'out' (of prisonCOUGH I mean school) I started my course and took over my family's boarding kennels. I told myself that that was enough and when I wasn't working/ studying I could laze. This year my un-fulfilment and restlessness (from not being creative) reached it's peek. So I cracked the whip and converted my unproductive time into drawing and life coaching. I plan to be a novelist and illustrator Have you heard of Shaun Tan's work? I want to do stuff like that  And I have plenty of ideas for novels - mostly fantasy epics (along the same vein as GoT etc, but less bleak, more didactic and probably more of a 18 give or take target audience).
Haha, you didn't ask about me but I somehow ended up telling you anyway

butterscotts In reply to ProjectMetanoia [2014-08-18 11:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like you have a nice goal to reach towards. Good luck with your endeavors and I will have to look up Shaun Tan's work, haven't heard of him but I know what GoT is, am a big fan, definitely an inspiration.  Funny how similar our stories are, my senior year of highschool, everyone I knew was going to go to college, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life haha. But I had scheduled half of my school day in art class for the entire year lol, and it became evident what I should strive for. After graduating, I took the first year to work on an entrance portfolio to a design school in Columbus Ohio called CCAD. I got accepted, met alot of crazy good artists that helped push me in the direction I'm heading now. The middle of my second year, I had to drop out, no more money, and my mom was in and out of the hospital at that time,  so I decided to move back home. Got a job with my dad weedeating and mowing for a private estate. After that, I didn't do much art, spent most of the time worn out and playing games, watching movies. So fast forward about 4 1/2 years, I get tired of being uncreative and sick of my attitude towards life, so I just started studying and sketching like crazy, tried to remember why I wanted to do art for a living in the first place For some reason reason, I don't feel quite as alive as when I'm sitting at my computer sketching away, and after a while I started to feel more like me again, not as cranky, or agitated So, yep, that's my story, 26 year old trying to reach his goal, not there yet, but however long it takes will be worth it in the end. Anyways, sorry I didn't ask about you earlier, not sure why I didn't, maybe its because I'm a bit reclusive in nature. XD

ProjectMetanoia In reply to butterscotts [2014-08-24 07:14:42 +0000 UTC]

I'll give you my perspective on Shaun Tan. His published work tends to be kind of like a 'picture book' - but the story/content is aimed at  mature aged people. He has a lot of hidden, allegorical, philosophical messages in his work. His art style as well as story telling style is quite unique. To be honest I probably wouldn't like his work as much if it didn't involve animals and sci-fi aspects He won a huge international award for his wordless 'comic' (it's strange to use that word for it, because that particular work was rather 'serious') called 'The Arrival'. The book boils down to being about immigration and how alien a new country can seem - there are many more facets to it though I think that award was a strong propeller in his fame (in Australia - nothing significant, but anyone interested in literature will probably know of him).
Anyway it's difficult for libraries to find the right spot to categorise his books - as most look like picture books (not a colourful, 'kiddy' art style however) but teenagers and adults will get the most from them. They're not quite dark enough to be black listed from the kid section Unfortunately in most libraries they're just thrown in the kid section with the other picture books

Intriguing story! What does 'weedeating' mean, it's a cute term
Do you get along with your parents? Siblings? Did you read/listen/ watch any content which helped you resolve to commit to art again and focus your efforts on it? I myself needed a lot of youtube videos and some therapy basically from my life coach to get me to a place of commitment and knowing what exactly to do.

No, no don't apologise I too am reclusive. Quite honestly I'd happily live as a hermit in a forest somewhere (with internet )

butterscotts In reply to ProjectMetanoia [2014-08-24 23:51:37 +0000 UTC]

Sounds very cool, will have to look his work up myself. Weedeating is a term used when cutting grass. Not sure about Australia, but here in Kentucky, we have tons of grass that needs frequent cutting. www.devtome.com/lib/exe/fetch.… .
As for my family, I get along with my parents and my brother and sister. I'd always wanted to do art for a living, and my family was always supportive in regard to that. When I was in school, I met and befriended a lot of great artists, and seeing their work drove to try harder with my own, but when I dropped out, I lost those connections. Wasn't able to keep in touch, so after a while, I lost interest in working on my own stuff. But after I watched a few of Feng Zhus design cinemas on youtube (www.youtube.com/channel/UCbdyj… , and also Algenpflegers thread on conceptart.org(www.conceptart.org/forums/show… , I wanted to improve and continue striving for my goals. So actually, we have some of this in common haha. Though I'm not sure if I would want to live in forest, not around these parts anyway(there be bears in them woods lol). But without internet, Im not sure if I could survive

Really like the way you draw a persons stance/pose gives the character life and personality.

also like seeing the learning aspect (if that makes sense).

And your animals are awesome
