howdy, i was looking up old board games & came across your pages. definitely like the dungeon floor tiles. do you still own a set of WHQ?

Hi!
Indeed I do!
(I also bought a copy of the Warlock of Firetop Mountain board game off Ebay a little while ago)
If you're interested in Hero Quest or AHQ and WHQ I recommend the Lost and the Damned Forum [link] which has a few fans those games.

you must be one of the lucky ones. i've never played it, but have gone through various websites oooing, and ahhhing at all the great things available. how does it compare to the original hero's quest? that one i have.

I think I got mine in a GW sale - I was genuinely confused, because I thought it actually was AHQ.
I believe WHQ is a much more complete role playing system - large rulebook (bestiary, skills etc.) but the mapping is limited by the chunky sections (hmm, although it was a pain getting hold of some of the character sets - basically a figure with some stats on a card). The stats are closely linked to Warhammer. I personally believe it was Games Workshop's final concession to the RPG industry before closing the gates and focussing on WH40K, WH proper, and other table top battle stuff - in many ways WHQ is D&D without the role-playing. AHQ has more flexibility for mapping, but I haven't actually played it much. HQ is still easier to "pick up n play". (Oddly enough my recent experiences with HQ have been PC games I've found on the web - very good simulations) The quality of the components in WHQ was of high quality, the boards are solid, the connector archways really add to the effect, but strangely no actually furniture. (Edit: more like Space Hulk than Space Crusade) It's very easy to play solo games. It's kind of gritty. What's interesting is how different WHQ is to the WHFRP 1st ed - it's definitely more like a game which introduces the player to tabletop wargaming, but using a grid instead of rulers, if that makes sense? In summary WHQ is AHQ (with it's modular sections) with a big design make-over and extra rules. There's something very "controlling" about the WHQ rules and tables - whereas AHQ looks more free form and open. Again I recommend checking out the Lost and the Damned forum where there's quite a few HQ fans.

heya, i've been back and forth between the lost & damned and the board game geek websites, and there's a few more i've been looking around in. the more i look the more i want to play whq, just to do a game test of some sort. i never managed to have a go at whfrp or space hulk unfortunately.

i managed to find a bunch of zips of whq rulebooks, adventure books, etc. i've just been reading the pdfs, again just ooing & ahhing.

i'm thinking of following your lead & making up my own tiles with a paint program. how long do these take to make from design to completion?

Acquisitions! Excellent. One of the best parts of the WHQ basic game for me is the use of cards for the random dungeon, but this is eaisly replaced with a dice based table. Although the cunning is in the fact that the Quest room is only ever in the second half of the pack. Also splitting the deck is fun when there's a junction, because this then has implications for where the final cards appear.
I am extremely tempted to design a random dungeon generator with cards and tile sections for myself and perhaps to sell.

How long to make tiles. That's a very difficult to answer.
If you want to knock something together very quickly and don't mind "repeats", like in a map editor, steal a flagstone tile design, or draw and scan some flagstones (unless you're quite confident drawing on the screen). Resize and crop the single tile to the right dimensions (I think WHQ might be larger than one inch, but 1 inch will do nicely), then paste that tile (perhaps as a new layer into a document with a visible grid - making sure that it's set up to "snap to grid"). If you get it right, the flagstone square will snap into place quickly, and very soon you'll have a 4x4 room or a 8x2 corridor ("flatten" the image/merge layers to save on memory. For these sorts of quick layouts I'd recommend setting up a 100dpi document with a one inch grid. Most of my time seems to be spent on drawing the walls and re-aligning them on the screen, plus shadows and colouring, and lots of resizing of scans and experimentation. If you're drawing a plan - draw in sections to exact scale and be aware of the dots per inch you scan in. Some of the programs I've used like Paint Shop Pro can be really confusing when it comes to actual dimensions, dpi and printing. I've just about settled in with GIMP now. There's a few GIMP tutorials here for map making, you're just working on a bigger scale for floor plans. I have a very laborious trial and error approach. I really enjoying the drawing much more than the computer work, so I'm often having to drop complicated ideas in order to actual finish a piece. (Damn. I think I've just given some trade secrets away!)

Hello Billiam! I wonder how it would be possible to contact you to discuss about some of your artwork. I would like to use some of your tiles for a custom-made board game. I just want to make sure it is ok with you if I use your great drawings!

I don't see any email on your DeviantArt page, did I miss something?
