*gasp* you like Tamora Pierce?! Oh my glob! you are the first person I've met that's even heard of her!

boogeybug In reply to Cornflower13 [2014-06-18 14:40:41 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, she was a staple author when I was growing up. It's a shame people these days think Twilight and Hunger Games are the best books ever (not saying they aren't good books - that's debatable- but the nostalgia books say that my teenager years books were better... or were at least edited).Β Β

Cornflower13 In reply to boogeybug [2014-06-18 17:13:19 +0000 UTC]
Yes I agree wholeheartedly. You would be hard pressed to find a spelling or grammar error in her books or any older books for that matter, while its very common to find two or more mistakes in some of the newer books (at least the ones I've read)Β
And I'm not saying new books are bad, in fact I adore lots of the newer books I.e: Percy Jackson and The Mortal Instruments. Β I just think sometimes older books are better

boogeybug In reply to Cornflower13 [2014-06-18 21:09:27 +0000 UTC]
It is more the editor's fault than the authors but still... it's not just a handful of typos. There are some large grammatical errors that make certain books very difficult to read properly and detract from the (perfectly good) story and characters. Well, I like all books, so can't complain too much since I've read Twilight, Hunger Games, The Mortal Instrument and Percy Jackson. I've got to keep up with what's hot in YA fiction after all.

Cornflower13 In reply to boogeybug [2014-06-19 05:13:06 +0000 UTC]
Yep there was this book that I actually had to stop because of all the errors. It was pretty bad if I remember correctly. ^^'
Its not like I think YA is inferior or anyrhing , the errors are just an annoyance.Β
Have you read The Infernal Devices? And what do you think is your favorite YA series/book?
π: 0 β©: 1
boogeybug In reply to Cornflower13 [2014-06-20 16:16:04 +0000 UTC]
It's not just YA. In general I've noticed a lot more typos, errors and bad grammar :/
I've read The Infernal Devices, or at least part of it. Not the newest one yet. But recently I also read "Matched" byΒ Ally Condie and "Cinder" by Merissa Meyer. I usually just find the staff picks and choose my books off that at the library. Plus, I read a lot of manga and comics and of course adult fiction. Been reading a lot of urban fantasy like Dresden Files and Mercy Thompson series because I read the first one or two overseas and want to catch up. Another one I started is between YA and A fantasy and it's by Robert VS Redick with 4 books in the series. Kind of a steampunk-pirate-fantasy fusion. It has a lot of YA elements but is definitely more mature.
I'd say my favorite YA series is probably Tamora Pierce's The Immortals quartet. And of course the Dark Materials trilogy (Golden Compass & sequels). Singularly I'd have to say "The Giver" or "Julie of the Wolves," which are very old school. Maybe "Island of the Blue Dolphin" or "Wise Child" too.

(Sorry for such a late reply )
I really like the way Cassandrae Claire ended it; she tied up all the loose ends nicely (in my opinion ), and I've heard they are making a movie which I'm excited for and not at the same time :/ I really liked Matched even though I still haven't read the last one yet. And is Cinder good? I've been thinking of picking up that series; it sounds good. Β I usually try and read the less known authors which can be wonderful sometimes and not so wonderful the other
Β Hmm I feel like I've heard of those two seires, they sound familiar. Β Ohh that sounds good what's it called?
Yes I really liked that one too, but I think I prefer her Beka Cooper trilogy. I loved the Dark Materials! I watched the movie when I was little and I just had to pick up the books!
I really really liked the Giver as well. I felt that in the very distant future that world could quite possibly be a solution that people would at least attempt if it were possible. Β I've heard of all three of the other books but I haven't gotten around to reading them yet. Β I also really enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid and all of the books by James Herriot.

Yeah, movies... movies are exciting because you want to see if it matches your imagination and it gets the series more exposure but on the other hand... yeah.
I'd recommend Cinder. It's an interesting twist on some old fairytales and a really enjoyable read. My friend gave it to me to read And here's the other series:Β www.goodreads.com/series/45194β¦ . It's a little more mature than some YA but it has a lot of the same themes.
And Beka Cooper was the last Tamora Pierce I read and I liked it too. I plan to finish it up soon, since I've only read the first two books. I've read A Wrinkle in Time, The Secret Life of Bees and of course James Herriot. They are all amazing too. So many good books and authors to read!
Have you read So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane? Or anything byΒ Diana Wynne Jones is good too. Howl's Moving Castle is probably the most famous because of Miyazaki's movie but all of her books are great.

Hmm I definitely will read it then. Β The other series sounds really interesting as well; I will have to check it out, thanks!
Yes so many books, not enough time Β Have you read the trilogy The Paradise War by Stephen Lawhead? Its a really good story that's based off of Celtic mythology. I really enjoyed it. He also did a separate trilogy based on the story of Robin Hood which I liked as well.
I don't believe I've read any of those but I remember thinking about picking up So You Want to be a Wizard, but then never actually reading it, I don't know why. Β And the others sound really good! I was actually planning on reading and watching Howls Moving Castle sometime soon, and from the descriptions they are both authors I will like! Thanks!

I haven't read The Paradise War. I'll have to check that one out after I finish the series I'm reading right now. Just another thing to put on hold at the library, mwahaha, poor library workers. There really are way too many books to read and not enough time.

I'm sure they hate me. I put 10-ish books on hold a week >.> transfers from other branches and directly off the shelf because if I don't put them on hold and I have to go IN the library I will be sucked in! At least if they're on hold I can stop at the front ;;;
