You should auction off a few of your sketches, you'd make a ton of money. (:

I have, in fact. I got my first DD about two months ago with my Philadelphia cityscape. It was a fantastic day of internet activity. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Your work is amazing! I am really awestruck by the patience and skill you must have for making these. I really want to grab an Etch A Sketch and start trying to do these myself.

My only question is, how do you decide the order in which you sketch things? do you map it out in your head? Or do you back track over lines when you need to get somewhere else?

bryanetch In reply to grizzlebaer103 [2011-08-20 13:00:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I usually start at either the bottom left or bottom right corner and work my way across, when doing the cityscapes. I'll begin with some unimportant building and then continue across from there. You always have to start on the edge, so I think that's probably the only way to do it, really. You can't do the important parts until you work your way over to the right area. I do sometimes make a rough sketch on paper so I know when I should be starting and stopping buildings. Thanks again!

bryanetch In reply to beastbookbody [2011-08-20 14:01:16 +0000 UTC]

I've been taking it seriously as a medium for about a year and a half now. My first full sized etch (NYC cityscape) I did from memory about 5 years ago and then sat on the idea for a few years. The rest of the cityscapes I use a source image for, as I'm not as familiar with the other cities as I am with NY. Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoy my etches

Amazing work! How many Etch-A-Sketch screens do you have? Do you keep your artwork for a long time or do you eventually erase it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to IanITAInc [2011-08-20 14:03:19 +0000 UTC]

I drill holes into the back of the etches before I do most of them, then I cover the holes with tape. After I etch something out, I'll remove the tape and sift out all the dust. It's incredibly messy and the aluminum powder sticks to your fingers and anything it touches, but afterwards the image is pretty much permanent. I probably have around 30-something etches of various sizes. Thanks!

IanITAInc In reply to bryanetch [2011-08-20 14:55:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow! That's amazing! Thanks for sharing that...

BTW, your idea of doing an Etch-A-Sketch museum/art display is a sure winner - especially with a vintage toy like the Etch-A-Sketch. Good luck with that! Your work is awesome!

Amazing and inspiring but mostly I love the originality. I can't pick a favourite - what's yours out of interest (or maybe which are you most proud of)?

Have Ohio Art Co. (they make them right?) seen your work - they would surely keep you well stocked for free if they had? A great advert for the "Power of the Etch-a-Sketch" [said in an ominous voice] I'd love to see one done in a stop-motion type of video or something.

It's crazy to think that you get just one shot at it too. I remember one night doing a pretty good picture on one (not by your standards but generally). I was so proud and nearly finished it - woke up the next morning and the kids had scrubbed it oh well - I figured that was the point of the thing, but never touched one again LOL

DA should start up a new category called 'etch-a-sketch' under 'Traditional\ just for you.

Maybe you could suggest it?
FAQ #208: I want to submit a piece, but it doesn't fit any of the Galleries. Can new categories be added to deviantART? If so how?

Myshee [2011-08-19 20:27:58 +0000 UTC]

I really love this, very unique, why did you start doing art with this medium? I'm curious!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to Myshee [2011-08-20 01:38:16 +0000 UTC]

I started using the etch-a-sketch seriously about a year and a half ago. I did my first full sized etch (my NYC cityscape) about 5 years ago while I was in college, and I just sat on it for about 4 years, just showing it to my party guests whenever my roommates and I would have people over (which was often..) I made my second etch (Chicago cityscape) about two years later for a friend who lived out there, but still didn't really get into etching seriously until last year when I realized I might be able to find an audience for it. The response has so far been pretty awesome and I've even gotten a few media features, interviews, ect. It's a lot of fun, hopefully I can take it somewhere (like gallery exhibits) someday .. I hope. Thanks so much, I appreciate it

That's fantastic, great medium. I think showing your art to the company might even get you some free etch a sketch's

ERB20 [2011-08-19 18:08:59 +0000 UTC]

This is really great work! Do you have to plan your pictures? It (surely) would be too difficult to just draw them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to ERB20 [2011-08-20 01:42:07 +0000 UTC]

With the full sized cityscapes, I'll sometimes draw out a screen-sized box and then do a fast sketch (like 2-3 min) of where I want all the buildings to end up. Helps to ensure everything lands in the right place and everything fits. Other times I'll just wing it and hope for the best. Thanks so much!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ERB20 In reply to bryanetch [2011-08-21 20:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I dunno how anyone can just wing it on an Etch-a-Sketch! do you ever put up pics of how you work on these?

You're welcome

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to ERB20 [2011-08-22 03:03:33 +0000 UTC]

I posted pictures of my progress on the Philadelphia etch, which can be seen in the 2010 archive on my blog here [link] A time lapse would be fun, I'm hoping to get it done eventually.
