hey, larry. i've been out of town (largely minus internet), myself. joshua tree, climbing (or trying to climb). it's been warm and we could use a little time playing in snow (i.e., we're suitably jealous).
looks like i've got a lot of stuff to look at now that i'm back on the intartubes.

It snowed all weekend. I'm beginning to wonder what April snow showers bring. But no, I'm not complaining. We've had the 5th most snow ever on record in Spokane (started records in 1890), and it is still gorgeous when it comes down and covers the lawns and streets.
Joshua Tree is a great place--plenty gorgeous there, too.

it bodes well for the water year that you are having such an abundance of snow. having a lot of snow can be fun, sometimes, and it's always beautiful when it's fresh ... but i don't really miss the winters we had in yakima (nor do i miss yakima, for that matter). i think a meter of snow is just plain too much, though it was fun to cross country ski to the store for food.
j-tree does look like another planet. it's an eerie beauty, i suppose. growing up in eastern washington, i think one becomes accustomed to looking for beauty where it's not generally expected, so it's really easy to find in j-tree. i'm not sure that made sense ... but i'm leaving it there anyway.

Yeah, I really like Joshua Tree. Not only did I grow up in EasternWA, but also spent some time in Arizona. So I have a fondness for dry places. I enjoy empty places, or places at least minimal. And while I enjoy forests, I find them a bit claustrophobic, and I think, "How can you see anything with all these trees?"

i think growing up in a rain shadow caused me to be inordinately fond of lush forests (well, that and the really bitchin' speeder chase in return of the jedi). i've wanted to live in a costal rain forest since i was about ... oh, say five. just hasn't worked out, yet.

A hot, hot sun beat down from lemon-colored sky. The flat ground seemed burned a sterile, bleached brown and incapable of supporting life. Life there was, strange stunted trees that lifted knotted, twisted arms to the sky. Little clumps of spiky leaves grew on the outer extremities of these misshapen growths.
"Heavenly day," breathed Bailey. "Where is that?"
Teal shook his head, his eyes troubled. "It beats me."
"It doesn't look like anything on Earth. It looks more like another planetβMars, maybe."
