Jargon: I tried to use as few as possible, not much more than the hyperspace stuff and the Galatea classification (btw, picked that - existing, but except the HD number nameless - star with Celestia ), but, as you said, it could be too much for non-SF-readers (and too much for some of the SF-fans - yes, I'm looking in your direction ST )

Niven/Delany: actually don't know any story of these authors, but I heard a lot of Niven. Have to catch that up.
The technology, especially the hyperspace travel stuff (except the Phantoms) is inspired by the early Perry Rhodan , a German SF series (English website here )

the captain's name: Well, I didn't plan to make him a big feature, since he'll leave the system after the planet (which has no name yet, too) is terraformed, but I thought of mentioning him in a subordinate clause (metaphorically speaking) - a bit of spoiler: don't take him too much to your heart...
He - and the hyperspace Phantoms - will not play a big role in this series, it was more like an intermezzo right at the start.

I know these stupid names, I thought of a lot of crappy names when I reflected (other) story ideas
