Yeah I knew you chatted with Matt as well, he linked me to your page before.
His software deserves way more attention than it currently has, tbh .
Hope to test out his new version today.

Hi, yeah we have dropped Win XP support finally in the most recent version. I did ask on the Facebook page what people thought about it, especially since you can get a 15% or more performance improvement from using features in newer versions of Windows... sorry, but users (myself included) really want that extra performance, and XP support is just not worth losing it.

RJohnstone [2013-07-09 23:41:49 +0000 UTC]

Thomas,

I am a fractal art newby, having just gotten started using Apophysis in May 2013. In watching fellow deviants, I have learned of a number of software tools that generate fractal art. My perception is that Ultra Fractal is top of the line for getting quality results. However, I am also seeing exceptionally high-quality images with the APO-Chaotica pair.

My primary interest is in algorithmically generating images that don't look like algortihmically-generated images. (So, "99.5%" of the fractal images I see on deviantART, although of interest, are not where I'm headed. Having said that, I've accumulated numerous images in my Favourites [sic] folders that better reveal my interests than any hard and fast rule.)

Could you briefly explain how you see Chaotica positioned in the fractal-art generator marketplace? What are its key strengths? What does it do, that Apo can't? What does it not do, that Apo can? I'm trying to understand the boundaries of both tools, as well as, the interface. [I'm not totally ignorant of Chaotica. I've visited the web site on multiple occasions. I'm just trying to better understand it vis-Γ -vis Apophysis.]

Lastly, how does Chaotica compare with Ultra Fractal? What do you see as the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two tools? [I'm not looking for a detailed Market Analysis from you --- just an off-the-cuff reading will do.]

I'm just a step or two away from investing time in Chaotica or Ultra Fractal, but thought I'd stop by and get your perceptions first.

Thanks,
Richard

lyc In reply to RJohnstone [2013-07-10 00:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Hi Richard, thanks for your kind words and interest in Chaotica! You've a good eye for the most important thing I think, the image quality I don't mean that facetiously - it bothers me when people place the greatest emphasis on performance, although this is a perfectly valid concern (and another of Chaotica's strengths relative to other renderers).

UltraFractal has a fantastic user interface and a lot of freely available formulae by others for exploration, however it mainly works with a different rendering paradigm, the so-called "escape time" methods. Although it can do the IFS method Chaotica employs, it doesn't specialise in it the way Chaotica does, and the plan is to push this IFS method very far into new territory. I've done much in personal experiments without "doing it properly" and commercially, as I've recently been able to thanks to my parent company, Glare Technologies. We usually make 3D rendering software, Indigo Renderer: [link]

The best suggestion I can give about fractaling is to check out the awesome #Aposhack chat channel, there are many people knowledgeable in UF, Apo and Chaotica there

PS. I love your formal register!

Hiya there lyc I wonder if you could tell me if you've added transparent png features in the recent version of chaotica. I have rendered a fractal using version 0.45 from [link] and my chaotica fractal render background was black ( not this is Richard not my sis writing ) Also what's the latest on the revised version will there be a 0.667 version of both 32 and 64
thanks for reading and really like what I have seen of your program so far , enjoy your day
