amazing gallery, please, make a tutorial on how to work with the brush as you do, i want to learn!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mattious In reply to prAjd [2007-01-24 22:54:54 +0000 UTC]

A tutorial would be impossible- you just have to get used to the pressure sensitivity needed to handle a brush. I can, however, give you a few general rules, that you generally should hev a good reason before violating, which will keep even somewhat clumsy brushwork from looking too funny:

1: lines on the bottom of things should generally be thicker, lines on top thinner. This is for two reasons- ones, a thicker like, like, say, at the bottom of a big jaw, will suggest weight. Weight faces down in this universe, so it makes the drawing seem right. The other is shadow, wich generally is on the bottom because light is generally from the top. You could go wrong always using thickj on bottom thin on top, but not esaily or often.

2: thin towards light source, thick away from it. Same reason.

3: thick/thin can suggest forground/background. It doesn't matter which, oddly enough, as long as they're different. It's more common to use thinner lines to suggest distant objects, thicker to suggest closer and more massive, but I've seen/done the opposite and had it work. Whatever you do, just don't make the forground and background the same line width.

4: Outlines are generally thicker than interior details.

5: the faster you can go, the more accurate and smooth your drawings will look. But speed takes time to develop. don't equate speed with sloppy. a slightly wobbly careful drawing done slow is better than a shitty imprecise fast one.

That's about it, aside from practice.

thanks alot. im sure this will help me.. but one thing.. i assume u make this freehand then scan them into a computer and fix em up, erasing etc, in eg Photoshop, right?

mattious In reply to prAjd [2007-01-26 20:38:09 +0000 UTC]

nah, I just use whiteout to correct mistakes here and there. Usually it's just stuff like adjusting a line's thickness, or eliminatig the odd place where I let a line cross another.

I'm nowhere near adept anough at the tablet to be able to make good corrections with it, and besides I like my originals to look exacly like the printed art. No professional reason, it's just me being anal.

I update every wednesday, and if you have me friended (I'm fairly sure you do, but I'm too lazy to check), then I have no idea why you wouldn't have been alerted.

Whattya do with the bamboo skewer? I was looking at trying one of those for linework. I'mnot sure what to expect.

Never done linework with one. I wouldn't think they'd hold enough ink.

You just dip the tip and write.

Hello and a warm thank you for your helpful critique! I have lately been working my ass off at my other job, (which has nothing to do with art, i work at a zoo) and starting from today i will have time to draw more and try to improve what you pointed out.

I wish to tell you that you don't need to worry if i get offended or anything, like you said, if i will work professionally with this i have to keep an open mind and be prepared to grow with the help of others And you have a direct and funny way of potinting things out, I actually sat here, nodding my head and smiling as I read it. So thanks!

I want to say I am very thankful, and if you don't mind, i'll make some new images now that i have more time- and perhaps correct some old ones, and then i come and bug you again and ask for more feedback?

and if there is anything i can do for you, as a thank you for your time, just tell me! if i could, i'd send you your much needed breakfast

Kind regards,
Anneli

I'm sorry, I didn't realize Inkstains needed me. Meanwhile, I suppose this is my opportunity to say I'm a big fan. My friend bought me a copy of Out of Water a couple of years ago and I was like "oh snap, this shit is AMAZING". And now you and I are mutual DA watchers. It's a small world...

Don't stop drawing 'til you die. Anything less would make baby Jesus cry.

All is forgiven, just make sure you give Hilary comics, or we'll join together and destroy you with our power move.

And I'm very glad you liked Out of Water. With all these new people, I've even had a few folks decide not to be freeloading cheapskates and buy a book. Four, so far. Which is interesting, because at conventions I make a sale every third or fifth person I speak to, on average. With the amount of people coming through, I would have expected a hell of alot more. Especially with all the "OMG, what happens nexts?!" I was getting in the comments. Then again, I guess deviantart isn't usually used as a professional website, and therefore people don't come expecting to find great art to drop money on.

Another thing: two of those four were British. This is yet another reason for me to like the British, says I. The Brits are not freeloading cheapskates, and you can quote me on that.

I'm sorry no one told you when you signed up, but DA is home of the freeloading cheapskate. You aren't making any money here unless you're an anime artist with Mad CGing Skillz (tm), or you draw those adorable yet somewhat alluring furries the kids are crazy about nowadays. It's hard to find your niche in this community, but I'm rooting for you. As for me, Out of Water is a gift that just keeps on giving.

Ha ha, really I'm just still using this site because it will take me awhile to build a web gallery like I want it, and in the meantime, this is free. That, and Becky Cloonan has a page, and Becky is the shit. If it's good enough for her, it's good enough for me. Until I build something better.

Blood fantastic, 100% of the way through. Your stuff inspires me even though I couldn't write/draw/create in any way a comic to save my life. To my deeply unsophisticated eye, your pages are complete genius. Congratulations on the DD, you absolutely deserve it!
