Hey Scott
So I was perusing amazon looking for some good books showcasing some of the "golden age" illustrators- Parrish, Rackham, Dulac, etc. I was wondering if you had seen the books that Dover puts out and what you think of them if you have? [link]

I poked around some more and they do look like good collections. They also get pretty good reviews as well. Thanks for pointing them out.

hey, Scott! Sorry it's been so long since I wrote. Was busy this past month.
Thanks for the thoughts on the books. I'm really fascinated with these artists... probably because I remember them so well from the books I read when I was a kid. Definitely a bit of nostalgia going on.
I'm going to run off and see what you've been up to since I've been out.

I'm actually about to order one now to use in a future analysis, so I'll let you know what they're like. Might also see if I can get in touch with the editor.

That one looks like it could be pretty good, and it's not that expensive either. I found a couple of the Dover books on Mucha at Barnes and Noble but didn't get them because they didn't have color reproductions (for the most part). I've picked up a few of the Dover clip art books - most recently one for Victorian designs and one for Art Nouveau designs. I haven't tried the ones that have actual paintings on CD, though.
Incidentally, I'm not sure but I think that the editor of the book, Jeff Menges, contributed art to one of the collectible card games I used to play all the time. He had a quite distinctive style.

Yeah Scott, I linked people to your Promethea critique on reddit.com and you are a HUGE hit. These are outstanding articles, prepare to be adored!

I'm not usually one for language, but...
Holy shit.
Thank you very much for the mention there - your link title is very kind.
The pageviews that are coming from there dwarf anything else I've had, including the twitter mention that James Jean did. Anyway, I'll keep 'em coming. I was looking for articles like this and not finding any, so I decided to make some. Do you have any favorite illustrators I could do (past or present, comics or not)?
Thanks again.

Indeed, reddit is a hot spot for getting hits.
I would love to see you examine Dave Devries: [link]
That is a blog I built for the upcoming Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. My personal blog is here: [link]
I think you should make a seperate blog just for your critiques. I think it would be a phenomenon. I love Wordpress, and I would be happy to help set it up if you want.
Your stuff is an inspiration, and I will be using it in my art classes!

I'd been considering that. Wordpress looks like a good option, so I'll look into what my host provides, etc. I'll also take a look at Devries stuff too - I wasn't familiar with him so thanks for passing it along.

Came across your art analyses on Reddit, and I'm glued to them! Pretty much the closest thing to a real art class I've had in a year, so thanks for putting the time into them, they're great! And so is your gallery!

You've got a nice gallery too. I like the UP pic, of course, but the Othello cover caught my eye too. Nice work.

Hey Rashad! I'm glad you found me. I'm aiming for a journal entry a week and am always looking for illustrations to take apart. Have any favorite ones (comics or not, modern or not)?
Thanks for the fav, too.

Thank you.
Nice stuff in yours too - I like the lettering designs. If you want to you could seriously take yourself in the direction of logo design. Looks like you already know a lot of what's in there, but you should check out some typography books if you haven't already.

You are welcome
I actually haven't been checking out books about it, but now that you mention it I actually should look at stuff like that.
I love doing these things for fun and for people on dA. And I'm getting better every time. Or so I would like to believe.
Thank you for your kind words and advice.

thanks Scott, i really appreciate it By the way, I will be taking Book Illustration this semester with Martha, I am really excited and I need to pick a book to illustrate all semester. Asimov is in my mind, I will see. Peace

Thanks again for the new fave. I'm not taking a class this semester, but I've got a few projects like these analysis things to keep me busy. Maybe next semester.
Did you settle on a book for your class this time? How's that going?

OluDeniz In reply to sequentialscott [2009-09-10 15:00:25 +0000 UTC]
no problem Hope to see you next semester, i might take web design with dreamweaver next semester, and hopefully will graduate
We kind of settled yesterday. I carried a pile of books to school to discuss. After elimination of many, we have decided to dig a few books, and see if i could extract any ideas from them.
Here is my options;
Turkish fairy tales (luckily i have found 40 tales and in English, yay)
Short stories of Asimov (man, his robots are like a family to me, i love them dearly)
Short stories of Kafka (I really need to go through the books, luckily i have all short stories from him, some of them really short, like a paragraph)
The Nose by Gogol
I need to make a decision and come up with a plan in a week.
First I will go through everything except Asimov, If im not satisfied and confident with other stuff, Ill go with Asimov.
We will see, we will see....
Oh, btw , i need to write a research paper on book illustration too.
Thanks for asking Scott, peace

That sounds fun. I've been waffling on whether to take anything, and I suppose I need to make up my mind pretty quickly. I'd either do Art 101, Graphic Design 2, or Illustration 2. I've read a few Asimov books and think they could be a lot of fun. Arthur C. Clarke, too.

School is about to start, like next week. Be hurry
AR 101 is nice and simple class, but considering your art analysis, I think you know all what they will show you. Id rather take figure drawing or painting.

Hi Deniz! I never knew that you spelled your name that way. I found V on here, but he obviously hasn't updated in a while. I added him to my friends list though, so I'll see it if he does add anything else.
Thanks for the favorite on the Apple Gatherer too. He's an evil fairy type.
