In my opinion art is not about strict definitions and conventional people who have limitations in their own dreary minds . Maybe my own personal definition of a 'in up' is different to yours and deviantarts. Fuck the mainsteam and the conventional people who drain out this fucked up earth with conventional definitions and rights and wrongs. I tick your box with a cross. On the whole, thanks for the advice.

A) Why do you people always want to have this argument in my deviantComments instead of, oh, I don't know, ON THE PHOTO I COMMENTED ON? This honestly baffles me. Why is my deviantPage considered the appropriate forum for discussion? Why not my Shoutbox? Why not the Journal Entry I just posted on this very topic? Why not anywhere but my actual home page? Are you that desperate to make sure that everybody knows what an enemy of Art I am and how you pity my ignorance?
B) Speaking as a person who has shot zombie-on-vampire erotica, pictures of Joan of Arc strung up in a net of barbed wire, and formal portraiture involving infant cannibalism, I'm not big on convention either. But deviantART has rules and a TOS and you agreed to abide by them when you signed up (and again every time you submit a Deviation.) Breaking them doesn't make you look like an avant-garde rebel. It makes you look like somebody who thinks they're a Speechul Snowflake and who doesn't have to honor their word or follow simple and reasonable procedures like the rest of us.

But I don't go posting nasty messages on people's home pages. I keep clearly in mind at all times the distinction between a person and that person's work. Comment on my pictures all you want. I never hide any comments on my work no matter how critical unless they're spammy. But why post it here?

I didn't have your picture removed. I don't have the power to do that. If it was removed, it was because one of the people who *does* work for the site decided it should be removed.
As for who I am to judge others, you'll notice I only judge according to dA's stated rules. I don't judge artistic value. I'm harassing no one: I'm asking people to be polite and observe the rules.

If you have more important things to do than complain that I am asking you to follow the rules, and that the admins are making you follow the rules, then why are you complaining?

"Manners" != "Respecting patent nonsense."
Manners are time, place, and manner dependent, much like free speech. I never criticize the message, only the medium. On an artistic website, that's not ill-mannered, that's freaking heroic.

People like me? How can you say such a thing? I am 19 years old and you, you my friend are a 37 year old man. You don't know who I am at all, and I understand that a poor upbringing as made you an impolite jerk, but I don't see why you need to take it out on me when I did nothing to you. I simply experimented with taking self shots and yes sure there are a few things that I probably should have done better, but the key word here is experimenting. I am not an amazing photographer like most people on Deviant Art are that's why I play around and see what I am good at and what I need to improve upon. Now next time you decide to be a jerk to someone much younger and less experienced then you maybe you should rethink you reaction to the person's shot and maybe give some helpful hints instead of insulting them. Help the person improve their work dont diminish it.

If it's a Scrap and you post it to Pin-Ups, you are going to get a certain amount of snarkiness. Nineteen is plenty old enough to know that not everybody is going to love you like your mama. (And if your mother tried to drown you at birth and is presently in an asylum, please look up the phrase "literary cliche" and let's get on with things.)
If you can't tell from looking at them why I posted snarky comments about your pictures, there is no point in trying to give you "helpful hints." Come now. Look at them again and be honest.

I find it embarrassing that you're a 39 year old guy and you're saying these offensive things to someone who's just experimenting with a camera. And to be honest with you mate, I don't really like your work, but do you see me complaining? But perhaps I'll point some stuff out. I don't like how with every photo on your first page, you feel the need to post the exact same one in red. And they are all slightly out of focus, I'll note 'Beautiful Menace' especially since it would be great in focus. In fact, they look more like spontaneous photos to me.
'Even Tastier Bate' is something my 11 year old sister could do and looks like it should be in scraps and your night horizon shots are just randomly taken with boats in the way, no cropping, while I would prefer a clean shot of just that beautiful moon.
But that's your work and if you like it, that's all that matters. Don't pester people who are trying to develop their skills because even you started somewhere.

Thank you for your comments. I would appreciate it if you would leave comments on the photos themselves, as I find that helpful in improving. I'll also be glad to respond to any criticisms posted on my pictures if appropriate.
As far as the comments I leave, I find it hard to believe that a 19-year old person with Internet access hasn't seen enough good pictures (dA is full of them) to be able to tell a Scrap from a Pin-up. Also, I still don't see what my age, whether it be 37, 39, or 76, has to do with anything.

CelticTouch In reply to stmarc [2007-09-22 23:49:05 +0000 UTC]
I don't think her photos are scrap worthy. They're not to my taste at all, but there has obviously been a lot of thought put into them, and if she had the right equipment and props (which a 19 year old rarely has) it would be just as good as yours, if not better. Please take these things into consideration.
As a 17 year old, I like to think that I can look up to adults and see them as an escape from the immaturity of youths, but its people like you that really make me believe there is no hope in the world and it makes me wonder if you clearly haven't learnt enough life lessons if you donate your time to picking on teenagers you don't know from Adam about their work on a website.
Now you have to ask yourself, do you want to spend your time being talked to like this by people who should be looking up to you? If the answer is no, perhaps you should take a more considerate approach to picking out faults.

I have absolutely no desire to have anybody look up to me and I do not consider myself a role model. I say what it occurs to me to say when it occurs to me to say it. Tempering my comments in respect of the tender years of a person who's old enough to kill people for a living would seem to me to be extremely patronizing and I refuse to do it.
If you don't think her pictures are Scraps-worthy, then you don't. Go and leave nice comments on them. Please do not tell me what I should think, and I will extend to you the same courtesy.

Well... let me get this straight here: When yelled at, you say, "Thank you for the criticism and help and I'll fix it." But yet instead of giving criticism yourself, you feel the need to berate, mock, and generally put down and crush the hopes of young aspiring artists. You state that you don't need to temper your comments due to tenderness of age, yet 18-20 is really when a lot of artists really find themselves experimenting in fields. So, by your logic, you tell me that you walk up to a 5 year old who's drawing a picture or taking a shot with his mommy's camera and tell him that his art sucks and he should never do it ever again?
Judging from the comments on your main page, I would say that you are a very rude and angry person and I completely agree with CelticTouch. Your shots are horribly out of focus, awfully lit, and in many of them, you take them to photoshop and add red to them.
You said to someone else on your page that you do not like people uploading pictures into the wrong sections. Well, last time I checked, taking photoshop to add a red tint to a picture is Photo Manipulation and not Fetish Portraits or Pin-Ups or Portraits. It is Photo Manipulation.
You are no Clint Mansell or other famous artist. you have no right to tell people that their art is bad. If you think that art as an expression of ones self can be quanified as "good" or "bad" then maybe you should find another website, for it seems to me that you are generally disliked here.

I'd really rather respond to photo comments *on* the photos, but since you people won't leave it alone, I'll just say that the pictures have not been Photoshopped. The light was red. They are soft and grainy because it was a basement fetish club. These tend to be rather dark and require shooting wide open at high ISO's and long shutter speeds, especially if you're not using your flash like a jerk. And if you think they're in the wrong place, then report them.
As for the rest, mayhap you're right. However, I wonder why I don't see people going around telling other people who leave comments like "great job!" and "sexy!" on, well, you know, "Maybe you shouldn't tell them they're great, or they won't ever get any better."
Hmm.

LeviathanSteamworks In reply to stmarc [2007-09-25 06:05:47 +0000 UTC]
First off: I'm not going to leave comments on your pictures because it's not your pictures I am criticizing, but you. I just mentioned your work and not actually focusing on one piece in particular.
Also, it's called "constructive criticism" you ass. You lend them helping observations of their work on how they can improve and get better. You don't tell them to never do their work again and what they're doing it wrong and awful. I'm going to stick my neck out on a limb here and assume that you failed the "social interaction" portion of life growing up, didn't you? I Watch the banter between you and others who visit your site, and it really makes me wonder if perhaps, just perhaps, you're incorrect in your thinking? That one woman who got a deviation removed by you, for example.
Now, I never saw the woman's picture so I can't exactly judge that situation, but I can say that you seem to be riding a very tall high horse. Maybe she was breaking policy, maybe she wasn't, but all I know is that it is also against deviantART policy to leave rude, degrading, hateful or spiteful comments. If I felt so inclined, I could report you as I'm sure many already have and many more will. What really makes me sad is that you seem to actually think that you are doing both these people AND the art world a favor by crushing these peoples dreams when in all honesty, it's people like you who need to be banished from the art world.
In every other type of activity, people like you are highly looked down upon. In the geek world, you people are called "n00bs," people who really aren't as good at what they do as they seem to think and are extremely rude to anyone who they think is worse then them, which in all actually is more often then not someone who is better then them who attempts to give them good advice.
So, here is my advice to you. Continue uploading your art and take criticism in hand. In your other-hand, please hold kindness. You seem to believe that your being rude is fine because you shouldn't have to cater to the creativity of young minds. Maybe you do and maybe you don't, but you should be constructive in your criticism. That's just called simple kindness and it's severely lacking in this world due to people like you.

stmarc In reply to LeviathanSteamworks [2007-09-25 12:16:47 +0000 UTC]
A) I didn't remove anybody's Deviation. For the Nth time, I don't have the power to do that, either directly or indirectly. Of course, since it wasn't removed at all, but moved to her Scraps by an admin who thought it was in the wrong category, it's kind of a silly thing to argue about, isn't it?
B) This is not "the art world." This is deviantART. If you think I'm harsh, that tells me, frankly, that you haven't spent a lot of time in "the art world." There, I would be considered rather a milquetoast.
C) You're funny. There is just no other word for you telling me the definition of "n00b." I was rockin' the geek long before you learned to 1337. While age is no indicator of skill, just so you know why this Amuses me, I had my first personal computer before you were born. *counts back* In fact, in the year you were probably born, I was on my third one. That being said, feel free to criticize me in whatever form Amuses you.
D) If it makes you feel better, keep right on a-preachin'. I just wanted to let you know that better shrinks than you have had at me: I have yet to throw an arm dramatically across my eyes, the other up to Heaven, and declaim, "Oh, the error of my ways strikes me like a thunderbolt of shame! Woe! Remorse, remorse!" So if you honestly think you might illuminate my dark soul and bring me into the light, you're wasting your time. If you're just trying to show everybody what a valiant White Knight you are, carry on.

LeviathanSteamworks In reply to stmarc [2007-09-25 21:27:12 +0000 UTC]
A) Admins don't move pictures to Scraps for being in the wrong catagory, they move them directly into the right catagory. It has been done to me when I was confused as to which catagory a submission should go under. They move things into scraps when they get a complaint from someone about the piece.
B) This isn't the art world... this is devientART... that makes me giggles with all sorts of amusement. So your saying that a website community dedicated completely to the arts is not part of the art world...? Wow... that's kinds special...
C) I don't care too much about your past history unless it's to say that your mother didn't love you enough which would explain quite a bit.
D) I'm not trying to be any sort of "white knight." I was just hoping with the faintest of hopes that you would realize that you were being a rude, arrogant, conceited asshole as so many others on your user page have attempted to tell you. Unfortunately, it's that "arrogant" part that makes me believe it is a hopeless cause. So, enjoy being a prick to people who are learning and exploring and I pray I never see you in any dungeons I go to...

stmarc In reply to LeviathanSteamworks [2007-09-25 22:31:46 +0000 UTC]
A) But they only do it if they think the person was right.
B) For a broad enough definition of "art world," anything is part of the art world. Somewhere around here I have a picture of that Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza wearing a Cubs hat. However, for a reasonable definition of "art world," no, deviantART is not really part of the "art world," in much the same way that Wikipedia is not part of the "serious scholarly research world." Sorry if that offends anyone.
C) It's totally irrelevant. I was just explaining why I found your comment so Amusing. Pardon me for trying to share a smile, I'm sure.
D) Come now. Let us be honest with one another. You wanted to make me look like a bad guy to make yourself feel like a good guy. If you seriously thought that a random comment on my journal could suddenly change my entire personality, you have a bad case of magical thinking. And don't worry, you shan't. Over-touchy dominatrixes bore me to tears and unfortunately, the ratio is just far too high anymore. Fetish clubs, on the other hand, I peruse when the mood strikes me. Just avoid the ones in Chicago, and you should be safe.

Excuse me sir, but you leave comments such as "who gave this girl a camera?" on her photos! I just find it so unnecessary and you are no better than the people who leave "sexy" as a comment.
Because AT LEAST they are commenting on the picture and work. A comment that would help her would be "I like the pose, but perhaps you should take objects such as backpacks out of the picture so the main focus is the model." etc.
I'm not going to keep replying to you because one thing I've learnt from a young age is you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Or at least a nearly middle-aged dog. I've said what I wanted to say, I'm going to get back to real life now.
