It isn't me who works with viruses, but friends who work up at the college. I'm an artist and metal worker out here by the bay.
I would love to see Georgia some day; I hear the mountains are beautiful. 'Hope you have a wonderful spring. Here it is still snowing at night, but not much, and then melting in the daytime. The fruit trees are still bare, but the bulb flowers like crocus and tulip are coming up.
There aren't many people here who do enamel, but her is a link to the web site of a friend of mine who does. [link]
Hope to see more of your work sometime soon.

I am absolutely blown away by the classes offered...I keep smacking my desk, as I'm too late for most of the classes this semester. I'll see what I can do about making your tool-making class at the end of the month. I'm really wanting to learn a few more techniques that I can combine with my stained glass. Glass, bone, metal, wood...all amazing materials that I wish I knew more about working.
Oh, wow! I'm really excited about that 'studio maintenance' program. One of my biggest issues - seeing as I've been teaching myself - is that I've got no idea how to keep up the things I have managed to get a hold of. Wow. Oh wow.

The tool making class is always a hit, so we run it sometimes two or three times a year. If it is full this time around don't worry, and this time it will be an abbreviated workshop lasting only one day. I often teach a two day version of that one so that students can do some more complex projects, of the sort you see in the photograph on the Danaca site. I don't etch copper, though it is not a difficult process, and there are far less dangerous chemicals used nowadays than in the past. I would recommend reading the section on etching in The Complete Metalsmith, by Tim McCreight. I do sometimes teach an intro to engraving, and in most of my copper and silver work the detail is engraved. For larger scale pieces there are a handful of simple tricks to get a lot interest in a piece with a modest amount of time spent.
As far as incorporating other materials and techniques into stained glass I would think that anything that you can grind to fit the cameing and that will withstand the heat of soldering would work well. I would probably avoid wood unless it was well sealed against moisture, since its expansion and contraction with the humidity would loosen adjoining pieces. You could also do panels with copper or bras sheet with designs cut through the sheet metal, and placed over a slightly thinner pane of glass, and then set in the cameing. You could even solder the edges of the copper to the cameing to deal with designs that have unsupported elements.
Hope to see you in a workshop soon

Your welcome. You have an eclectic assortment on your gallery as well. In case you were wondering about the comments on the clothing; my ex-wife was into Flemish Renaissance gear, and I made a lot of clothing for her. And long ago I worked for a time in theater in Ashland OR.

When I was at university the local college radio station would play the Hitch-hiker's radio show on Wednesday nights, right before a half hour of JRR Tolkien reading from his own works. I made a point of not studying on those nights.

oh my! that's so cool...wish i heard those shows and i didn't know that Tolkien read from his own work on the radio...that was probably quite a while ago.
i most totally agree: studying on those nights would've been a waste.

Hei
I was again admiring your wonderful job with the axe and i wanted to ask you about making silver inlay in wood and bone. Do you know how to do that and if you do - could you give me some useful advice?

No I don't have any experience with that sort of work, though I know it is a different process than with metal.
