And... I'm talking about between Poser, Poseray , and Povray.

Lokai2000 In reply to Foxhero [2006-12-31 04:41:14 +0000 UTC]
I use Poser to assemble the scenes. If you are looking for cheap... DAZ Studio works almost as well and is free. Poseray is used convert the .obj files exported from poser to povray format. Finally, all the material assigments, adjustments, and rendering is done in Povray/MegaPov. Povray and Poseray are free.
Since the scene composition and material tweaking/assigment takes the longest, I spend most of my time in Poser and/or Povray depending on the project.
If I am modeling my own stuff, then I will spend a lot of time in 3DSMax. (Blender is a full featured free modeler out there as well.)

Well.... I downloaded povray and I have no idea how 2 use it.... But whichever thing you can make HUMANS with (like you) and is FREE ... I'd like to know where I can find it. (if there is one)

Povray is a really powerful render engine... it is just a bit.... overwhelming....
No so much make human models as work with them. Go to [link] and look up DAZStudio. It is free. Once you have that, there are several free models out on the web you can download and play with.

sweet!!
how did you get into modeling women in the first place?
how did you get to be so good?
is everything you model/render a hobby, or do you model/render for a company?
if so what company?
do you model everything from scratch?
(everything i model is math based i cant even model a finger)
is it more artistic or more mathematical?
would be hard for someone like me to get into that kind of thing?
if i think of anything else i'll ask later.
thanks

Wow! That is quite the list!
-> how did you get into modeling women in the first place?
It actually started with drawing. Hands and feet were always problems for me. One evening I remembered that one of my friends gave me this program called Poser that allows one to position figures. I thought that would be a great way to visualize the poses. Once I started using the tool.... well... I never did get that drawing done.....
-> how did you get to be so good?
I always find this a difficult question to answer as I am always trying to improve myself. I pull a lot of skills from my photography days as well as other disciplines.
I also have a very strong technical background in computer graphics and image processing. 3D opens a venue where I can merge my technical skills and my artistic side.
-> is everything you model/render a hobby, or do you model/render for a company?
Just a hobby. My real world job is so demanding that I couldn't handle doing this kind of work on the side. (Nor would I be willing to give up my paycheck to go into the art world. )
-> if so what company?
See above.
-> do you model everything from scratch?
Not everything. I really don't believe in re-inventing the wheel if I don't have to. However, there are many times when I need something you just can't find anywhere. In those cases, I do make my own models. I have been doing more and more of this as I get comfortable with the tools. In cases where I don't model the objects I will almost always "tweak" the object through morphs or in modeling software.
There is another part of modeling and that is creating the materials/textures. I do a *lot* of custom work in that area.
-> (everything i model is math based i cant even model a finger)
-> is it more artistic or more mathematical?
I would have to say more artistic for the most part. However, a lot of my pieces have come about as I'm trying new features of the tools. (caustics, ior, creating water, etc...)
That's not to say math doesn't play a big part of my renders. One of the reasons my stuff looks different from everyone else is that I wrote some code that uses some heavy duty math algorithms to convert images into scene lighting. This technique is called image based lighting (IBL for short.)
-> would be hard for someone like me to get into that kind of thing?
I don't think it would be hard, but I wouldn't expect miracles overnight either.
I am self taught, but my skills have been developed over many years. I assure you that my first renders looked just like everyone else's. (and I still think I have a long way to go! )
If you are looking for somewhwere to start on the cheap (free!) ,
You can try [link] and look into a tool called DAZStudio. (Also known as D|S )
If you are into modeling you can check out blender. It is a very powerful and free modeling environment. One warning though.... it's user interface is different than just about anything else out there.
I also happen to really like the Povray / megaPov render engines. These are also free (but not for the feint of heart. ) There is a very good program called Poseray (also free! ) that can help get models from DAZStidio into Povray.
And please...... take a look at some portrait photography books for ideas on poses and lighting!
I see so many renders that have a beautiful character design, but the figure looks stiff as a board, the scene uses a bad camera angle, and the scene has poor lighting.

Do you use that all in one artwork? Take Vein for example.
π: 0 β©: 1
Lokai2000 In reply to YunaSakura [2006-12-12 22:28:19 +0000 UTC]
Yep. I used every one of those programs in Vein.
A lot of people use Poser's built in render engine, but to be honest, I just can't stand it. It is buggy, crashes a lot, and doesn't produce all that great of results.
Seems a lot of people are switching over to C4D to do final renders. parrotdolphin and I are some of the few that use Povray for rendering.
