you live in the netherlands?? i live in america, and my best friend, asia, came from the netherlands in 8th grade but she speaks english just fine. and she's tried to teach me a little dutch, like i know that 'jij bent' means 'you are'. because she tells me that all the time with adding something at the end. and hoy. hi.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-10-24 10:09:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes I live in the Netherlands. Sometimes It's kind of weird to know that there is a 6 hours difference between the Netherlands and America. Am I right that it is 6 o'clock in the US? It's kinda irritating for correspondence. Isn't it hard to talk dutch for American peole. I mean the pronounces and grammar is very different then the American. Like the fact you write hoi

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-10-24 12:58:45 +0000 UTC]

haha, yes, when you sent me that, it was 6 o'clock, which is really early for me, so I was still sleeping. But yeah, the way the Dutch pronounce words is like the weirdest thing I have ever heard. like the throat clearing sound 'achhhh' thing. Haha, we don't have that, and people do that noise when they are imitating someone throwing up. hahahaha, so when I hear my friend start to speak Dutch, everyone is like "HOW DO YOU DO THAT!!!" and 'jij' is pronounced I. When I try to read her Dutch writing, I always forget that. But yes, the grammar is very different.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-10-24 13:31:01 +0000 UTC]

You know what's even more annoying? ei and ij are pronounced the same way. Just as ou and au are pronounced the same but you can't use both in dutch writing by the words you hear them. Even dutch people do it wrong. stijl and steil sound the same but mean something different. I don't even know what it was exectly!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-10-24 14:09:03 +0000 UTC]

haha, I couldn't pronounce those words if I tried. And she says that to her, English sounds like an old country language, which makes me laugh, and I can't tell the difference between Dutch and German, but she says they're similar.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-10-24 14:27:47 +0000 UTC]

The pronounces are actually very different but the grammar and words are in some way famillar but sometimes words are exectly the same but mean something compleatly different like In Germany tafel means (chocolate)bar but in the Netherlands it means table this is kinda confusing. But at least i can watch German tv and understand the most of what they are saying.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-10-24 19:30:32 +0000 UTC]

haha, yeah i know what you mean. Spanish and english is almost the same wrote out, but they pronounce it so differently, that i cant tell what they're saying. like most are english wods with an 'o' at the end. like magnifico is magnificent, they look alike, but they are pronounced so diiferent. or gramatico is grammar.

haha, ahh those Romans.

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-10-25 15:04:59 +0000 UTC]

It's from the latin words. The reason It is in the netherlands so different (macnificent= geweldig) is because the Romens only got as far as the Rhine and didn't stay long. As you look at the languages they are speeking in a country you can actually see how far the Romans got.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-10-25 23:18:10 +0000 UTC]

I didn't know any of that. But my school has never taught us anything about Romans. They've only taught us about how other countries have impacted the US. And then the history of America. I have not a clue what happened over in Europe besides WWI and WWII. And I love WWII, so I know most of those facts. My school needs to teach us more about other countries.

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-10-26 14:55:24 +0000 UTC]

WHAT! The time of the Romans is one of the most intereting subjects at history!I hope you know who Ceasar ws?!?!? I don't learn much obout the firt WW mainly because we didn't particepate. If the Dutch talk about "Before the war"we mean the second. Only American history sounds just as boring as the industrial revolution. When I think of it.... I know more about the English royal famaly then yhe Dutch one! (Not that the Dutch royal family has so much history. There have only been 3 kings and 5 Queens) All of our kings are called Willem XD the next will be king will be Willem IV! If you want to know some fun history read horrible historys or watch it on youtube (or BBC if you have that in America)

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-10-29 22:36:06 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I didn't know that either. I didn't even know that you had a king. I only thought that existed in England and fairytales. And still the only one I know is Queen Elizabeth, and that's it, I don't know anything else about the England Royal family. We have presidents. So our history is about learning each and every individual president, and what was going on at the time in our country.

that will be a lot... Other countries with loyal famalies are: Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Jordan, Spain .. more I don't remember. On the moment we don't have a king. We haven't got a king for a really long time.

hahha, me and my friend Asia went trick or treating yesterday for halloween and she had told me that you guys don't have that over in Holland. It's a night where you can dress up in a costume and go to people's houses, shout 'trick or treat' and they'll give you a piece of candy. It's not her first time doing it, I think its her 4th, but she had fun

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-02 18:45:02 +0000 UTC]

We know. What she probably ment was that it isn't really big. Most of the time I only remember it is halloween by the two groups of kids who come by. At some places it gets celebrated more but not much where I live. We have Siterklaas! He was first.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-03 22:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Whats Siterklaas? Today, I told Asia about the King and Queen thing, and she showed me on the computer a picture of Beatrix, and a thousand of other people. Then she made me try to pronounce the names, and it was horrible, haha. So she would say them first, and I would try to repeat her. It was still a big fail. hahah.

lol (dutch for funny). Sinterklaas comes from Sint Nicolas. The origenal Santa!!! He comes next week to the Netherlands and Belgium (Germany also but it isn't big there) in his boat withe the black Piets. Every night he walks on the roofs (with his horse)and puts presents in the shoes of nice children trough the chimneys. (we put our shoes below the chimneys) The Black Piets help. And at 5 december it is present evening! Then you get a lot of presents! It is like yhe advent calander and christmas morning. Santa comes from coca cola! We have the origenal XD He lives in Spain, but he comes origenally from Turkey. That why christmas isn't so big in the Netherlands as in other countries.

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-04 21:57:48 +0000 UTC]

I know what lol means, I write it just about everyday to people, (laugh out loud), haha. And Christmas for us is Dec. 25th. and he comes on our roofs too, and we have a tree next to our chimney, and he puts gifts under the Christmas tree.I'm guessing black Piets are reindeer or elfs. And I've learned that Saint Nick actually came from over here, and hes on the coca cola too. and he lives in spain? over here, he lives in the North Pole, or maybe the South, haha, I forget. Oh!!!! the black Piets are elfs, because i remember Asia telling me about that, she has a picture of herself in a class with 5 other kids dressed up as them. It looked so funny to me because they had to put on dark makeup. And she was only like 7 years old at the time. I was like What???? hahaha.

I know about Santa -.-' When it is Chreismas we do have a Christmas tree, but Saint Nick comes from Turkey and is older then the first colonists in America. With th lol I know laugh out loud, but it is also dutch for funny. You American guys use our words! (school stuff) dolar comes from daalder and Wallstreet from Walstraat. It is ours! Mwuhahahahahahahahaha!

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-05 20:12:54 +0000 UTC]

actually, mostly everyones languages originated from the Mayans, I believe. Either that, or the people who killed the Mayans. Then came Spanish, which evolved into English. And French, Italian, and Vietnamese are all very similar to Spanish. Vietnamese are spanish words, just not the same meaning, like 'tambien' means 'also' in spanish, but 'bye' in vietnamese. 'chow' means 'bye' in spanish, but 'hello' in vietnamese. I have not a clue where Dutch and German came from, I don't think they sound anything like english though, haha. And if you live in Holland, how do you know how to speak english, btw(by the way)? and Asia told me that she used to live in Oss and the long H word. hah.

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-05 20:58:22 +0000 UTC]

We learn English at school. Just as Frensh and German. I don't exactly know where dutch and German comes from. I thing Gallic (Belgica and Germania) It is only funny to see how much American words are origenally dutch. New York was first New Amsterdam in New Nederland. We were so origenal with names -.-' You have a city in America that is called Drenthe (dutch province) New Sealand from Zeeland (zee = sea) , also a dutch province.I don't know a city Oss. With Province?? The Heage?? Europenian languages are mostly from the Romans ore have influens. Only in the north (Sweden Norway ect.) They have a very different language. My father speaks good Italian by speaking frensh with a Italian accent XD He did it so well italian people tought he was Italian!

My school teaches me Spanish, but I only know how to write in Spanish, I can't talk and have a conversation with someone and understand it. Only if it was wrote down on paper can I understand it. And I know New Zealand. I have not a clue were it is, but it's a popular place. But we have all kinds of cities and places named after different places. I live in Michigan, and I went to Florida for the summer, and the names of the places that I passed were really weird names. Funny names too. hah. But I've never heard of Drenthe. And no, it wasn't called Heage, it was really long. like H.................... That long. Hahaha. Im not sure if Oss was a city though. I don't even know what Province is, haha. Unless you mean providence, then maybe it could be one. I'm not really sure. And my family came from Italy. Back in WWII, my great grandpa and his brother got on a boat that took them to New York. At the time, Mussolini was in control. and they went from new york to Canada. So my Grandpa can speak Italian, and my dad can speak a little of it. But its not that popular for most Americans to know more than one language. If i were to go in a huge building like a store, I'd say only 2 families out of that store probably speak another language. But i'm just guessing. I'd say 60% of Americans can only speak english. Thats just what I think though.

A province is like a state, but it hasn't it own rueles. It makes it easier to point out were you live and province do some stuff and I really don't know what. It is saperated by the fact it were different lands in the beginning thats why The Netherlands intead of Netherland. I live in South-Holland. Thats above Sealand. The Hague and Rotterdam lie in South-Holland. New-Sealand is for us dutch on the other side of the world next to Australia beneth Asia. Everybody in the Netherlands speaks one or more languages. We have to, because otherwise we could only go on vacation in Belgium -.- Nobady speaks dutch...'s Hertogenbosch??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-06 19:03:27 +0000 UTC]

YES!! that was the name. And we vacation, but we don't learn the language to go there. And what is New Sealand? new Zealand for us is a place in the US. but I got confused at the 'it's next to Australia' part, but its still Dutch. And me and Asia looked up the Netherlands along time ago. The Netherlands looks like the size of one of our really small states, haha. So how does it get split up if its small? We have counties. Its like splitting the state into small sections. And then theres cities into the counties. So is it like a county?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-07 16:41:04 +0000 UTC]

No.. A country has a flag and stuff. In Europe the countries are smaller, because of the many wars. America is one big country, because the English united it. In Europe there weren't any countries till The Roman Empyre. With New Sealand I ment the counry. I tought about that wen you said New Zealand. The Roman Empyre was just as big as the US, but it got splitted up. The Romans gave names to places they went to. Thats haw Btittania, Gallia, Belgica and Germania were born. There are more counties in Europe then the US has states (I am alsmost sure). Even UK is made out of 4 countiries. The BeNeLux are The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The low counries (de lage landen) distance is really weird. We are like "To Groningen (city)!, but that is way to far!" When it is 3 hours driving. But the Netherlands is growing. We make land on water (Flevoland) and there are now 3 Islands in South-America who are part of the Netherlands!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-07 19:31:34 +0000 UTC]

HAHAHAHAH, no COUNTY, not country. They're two different things. America is not one big country, its three. Canada, US, and mexico. We have to memorize the countries in Europe, so i know. And thats really weird that its built on water. And I did'nt know that the netherlands owns three islands in South America. But a county is ALOT smaller than a country. Its just like a group of two or three cities. But the difference is that it's missing an 'r'.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-07 19:46:16 +0000 UTC]

I have dyslextie. I know North America is 3 counties, but in Europe almost evrybody says America instead of US. It is actually more that we sucked al the water away and then you have land. Also the ports of Rotterdam are expending, but then we get sand from the North-sea and dump it by the port. Those 3 Islands are Satint- Eustasius, Bonaire and Saba from the dutch Antills. First they were all part of the United Kindom of the Netherlands, but they could choose to become totally independent (The Netherlands did the defence and the finances) or become a special community and be totally part of the Netherlands. Those 3 islands chose for the last one. But it isn't weird. I mean Martinique is part of France and England and you have more islands like that in South-America. Do you know where vatican (smallest county in the world) lies??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-07 23:35:52 +0000 UTC]

nope, and do you mean dislexia? because that means you read backwards, and why would you say that? but we only call it the US. When we say America, we think of the North. And I knew that you didn't literally build holland on water, and made it on land. Most of our states that lie around the ocean are built like that. Down in Florida, they've been hit by so many hurricanes, and due to pollution, the land has eroded away from some of the houses, so they rebuilt the houses on high stilts so they are prepared for hurricanes. Which is so different from the rest of the houses in the US. They can be a 1 story house, built 4 stories in the air by these giant stick-pole things. Plus its so hot down there. it'll be 100 degrees (F) in florida, and only 70 degrees (F) in michigan. I have not a clue what it'd be in celcius, i know you use that over there. And us americans use alot of slang, hahah, so when i said weird, i meant different. And if i said cool, i didnt mean cold, i meant awesome. And Asia's birthday was today, she called her mom, who still lives in Holland, and had a good 20 minute conversation in Dutch. It was the most interesting thing, with the different sounds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-08 19:52:21 +0000 UTC]

If we build houses we put pales into the ground. Otherwise the houses sink. It is a bit like a swamp. (Not that wet, but I don't know how to put it) Our houses are (most of the time) hevier then in America, because we make them with rocks. I don't think we use the same in the Netherlands. We don't have hurricanes. Sometimes we have a (super!) little twister, but nothing more. We are like OMG the tree in my garden fell because of the wind!!!! We litrely make soil out of water. the North-Sea was bigger 100 years ago!! 100 C is the tempature of water that is boiling and 0 C is water freezing. I think it was dislexia, but that means I see other things then are standing on the paper. They can be correct, but they aren't the same as on the paper. And it also means I have problems with learning other languages and writing it.Yes dutch sounds quet bizar doesn't it?? De and het (Both It) There is no logic when to use them! except that you alway use de when it is more then one and you use het wen it is smaller ( we add je at the end of a word and it is smaller) when it is more then one and it is smaller we use de. Thats all the logic. Frensh and German Its have more logic.

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-08 23:33:11 +0000 UTC]

huh, thats really confusing to me. In spanish class, spanish has different words for if the word is masculine or feminine. and the whole sentence gets effected by it. Like 'dress' is actually masculine. so 'she wears a red dress', the whole sentence has to turn masculine, even though your talking about a girl. That confuses me sooo much, because we don't do that. And I don't think thats dislexia, because I do that too, and I dont have dislexia. Its more of a disability. And i've seen Asia write je after her sentences alot, and her older brother, Orion. I thought it meant 'you'. hahah. we make fun of her all the time and say jij bent... or je bent.... then we say kipenkonz, or however you spell chicken butt, lol, or other stuff like that. but were just kidding, she calls us that too, haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-09 16:27:00 +0000 UTC]

kippenkont. I don't know where that comes from?? I don't call Americans chicken butts. We don't really have nicknames for you. We only have a mean nickname for Germans. We don't use it anymore, but it was common used after the 2e world war. Moffen. It is that if you see je standing alone (without another word attached to it) is does means you otherwise it makes it smaller. In dutch words aren't feminine or masculine. We do call objects and animals he without knowing of (the animal) is really a boy.

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-11 04:01:54 +0000 UTC]

No!! That's not a name for the Dutch, that's just a name we like to call each other. For example, Asia's name is the name of a continent. So as i see her in the hallways I'll call out "hey continent!!" Chicken butt is just a silly insult that we like to say to our friends because we know we're just joking around. My spanish teacher calls everyone ugly, hahaha, but it just makes us more friends. And my other friend Courtney calls everyone homo all the time. It's kinda like insulting a friend just makes you* better friends for some reason. it's only mean if your not joking around, and your being serious. And over here, we call objects male too, except men will call their cars a 'she' as in "ain't she pretty". Thats a common sentence men say when their cars are nice and clean, lol. And when I speak to anyone, I will say 'you' when i really mean anyone. Like i did up there^(i'll put a * where i'm talking about)

Me too, we have Thanksgiving comming up next. We celebrate it because its when the pilgrims first came to America and they had to share everything with the indians who lived here. The indians grew food, and the pilgrims showed them how to make meals out of the different foods. So in November, always on the 3rd Thursday, everyone makes HUGE dinners. And its called the Thanksgiving Feast. The most important thing is the turkey, i'm not sure why though. Thats comming up soon, and then we have Christmas, I can't wait, but its still a little far away.

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-12 21:38:32 +0000 UTC]

Asia says that sinterklaas is the same as Christmas. Over here, we start celebrating 12 days before December 25th. We call those 'the 12 days of Christmas'. But I'm not sure why that is because nobody I know actually celebrates 12 days ahead. Everyone I know just does it December 25th. I don't know about Sinterklaas though, I only know of Santa. In December, theres people who buy fake trees, or get real trees. and we put it in a holder thing. Then we get the lights and wrap lights and strings and beads and all sorts of stuff around the tree. Then we make little ornaments and buy bulbs (they're the circle things) and hang those on the tree. We put up stockings, which are supposed to be HUGE socks, but they are made out of really thick material. Then on the night of the 24th, little kids make cookies and get a glass of milk and sets it next to the tree. Its supposed to be for Santa. Then when we wake up, and its christmas, the whole tree is surrounded by thousands of gifts all wrapped up. And the stockings are usually full of candy and small gifts. The christmas colors are green and red. I'm not sure if its cold or hot where you live, but it's full of snow over here during christmas, so its really pretty when you go outside at night. Everyone puts up christmas lights around their houses. And the streets are all lit up with really pretty colors, and the snow, and these reeth things which are vines and leaves wrapped in a circle and usually has a ribbon and red little bead things around them. Well in my city, they hang those up on the street lights. I think the main reason for christmas is for families to get together. But it wont start for another month. Why does Sinterklaas start tomorrow? I thought it was the same as christmas.
