I know about Christmas stuff from the movies and our neightbour countries. Sinterklaas is Celebrated on the 5 of december the day before his birthday. It is actually the day before saint nicolas died. Christmas is when Jesus was born.sant Nicolas comes from Turkey. But when he isn't in the Netherlands, Bergium or Germany (He's invading Germany slowly) he lives in Spain. Santa comes from Sinterklaas actually. When the Dutch went to America they took Sinterklaas with them. It wasn't really populair by the English. Sinerklaas never really went away. Some cartoonist saw Sinterklaas and tought "I can draw him for Christmas, but then a little bit different" And like that the green Santa was born. Later Coca Cola saw the drawing of th catoonist and used it for their commircial and made the Santa you have now. You see it with the names. Santa- Sinter, Claus- klaas.

I dont understand the green santa part. Do you mean clothes? because our santa wears red. And Asia has told me that Sinterklaas lives in spain, but our santa desn't. Our santa did originate in Turkey, but not from Holland. And our Santa lives in the North Pole. He's supposed to have the idea that he is a jolly man who loves to live in the cold snow with little magical elves, and reindeer. The idea of him keeping 'slaves' is really horrible. So instead, they're little happy elves. And if sinterklaas is celebrated the 5th of december, why do you celebrate it now? Yes, Christmas started from the birth of Jesus. Mary had her baby, and it is said that there was a big, bright star over his cradle. Three wise men seen it, and traveled for a long ways to follow the bright star. When they got directly under it, they had seen Jesus in his cradle. Thats the story of when Jesus was born, and we celebrate it's warmth, and joy.

Santa is made red by coca cola because it fitted the image of coca cola more. The Idear of Santa comes from the Netherlands not Santa himself. (that's coca cola) He lives on the North pole because thats more winter like. I already told why we celebrate it now. It is his birthday (actually die day, but that's no fun for kids) 6 december! And he wants to celebrate his birthday with all the kids! But on his real birthday he wants to be alone with his black Piets. We even have a reason why he comes trhu the chimney. It comes from long ago when we still believed in more then one god in europe and one of those gods you had to offer bread in a cinda chimney. He would go down and get the bread. Thats why the black Piets are black. From all the ash! I know the story of Jesus, but I'm a non believer. Sinterklaas is celebrated witout all the holyness most peolpe forget he was a Saint.

I have learned a thousands of times where Christmas comes from, and i have never heard that it came from Holland. Most people in the US have not even heard of holland, because of the fact its so tiny. I believe in God, but different places have different religions. Christmas over here is all holyness. Its the only time where people are absolutely given the time off from work, if they have do not get breaks, to be able to see their families. Its the time where everyone gets together and celebrates their love for one another and Jesus Christ, family and friends. Its so full of joy, and has such a warm feeling to it. Some popular phrases are 'noel' which means love and peace. or 'All peace on Earth' because its supposed to be the day that everyone loves and shows peace to one another. Thats were the idea of giving someone a gift comes from. To show that you love them, and to make them happy for this one day.

per Noel is frensh for Santa. Don't you get any vacation! I have 7 weeks in the summer 1 week in the autum 2 seperated weeks in the spring and I don't exactly know how much in the winter. Well ist is kinda stupid if New Yorkers don't know us, because we build it. In the Netherlands people who believe in Christ don't know if they are catholic or protestant! But most of the people don't believe in enything. We believe that we can fight the water till in the end of days. Big chance we can't.

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-20 04:28:15 +0000 UTC]

I didn't mean school. I meant work, as in a job. Alot of jobs get vacations, but the jobs that are big, important, and away from the family, usually doesn't have that many breaks. Most people get the weekends off, and I'm guessing its the same over there. In school, I get lots of vacation time, 3 months in the summer, 1 month in spring, a week for thanks giving, 2 or 3 weeks for christmas, and plenty other vacations. But for jobs, the only vacations they are allwed are usually summer, and christmas. I think thats it. Unless your job has different rules. I don't live in New York, so I have not a clue if they know about you or not. But the people I know, who are in Michigan, don't know Holland. When Asia first explained to my other friend Kylie that she lived in Holland, Kylie thought Holland and Polland were the same thing. Lol, which they are definately not.

-.- In the Netherlands your job can never be far away. And I don't know where Michigan is so thats even. My father gets more vacation than that and he's a doctor. We have a lot of vacation time here.

oh, well if the US was THIS big, michigan would be in the I. haha. Its on the top. New York would be way over on the S, and on the right center. It really depends on what job it is over here. My dad gets 10 vacation days plus 2 weeks during christmas, and 1 month for summer. My mom is a hair stylist, and she gets so many vacations all the time. But we are in a really bad economy right now that everyone is losing their job. people have to go work wherever a job is open, just so that they can earn money or their family. So people move half way across the state just just to get by. Asia's mom still lives in Holland, but her dad lives over in Maryland, which is by New York. Asia lives with her step mom. That was the only job that he could find, so he sends some of the money he earns to Michigan for Asia and her step mom to live on.

The Netherlands doesn't feel the crisis so hard. We are the Europian country with the less amount of jobless people only 4 procent. We are panicing because that is hight for our standarts. We don't really move often for jobs it is really spred overhere. Only when you do something special you may have to move, but not as many times. I never moved in my live. My dad 3 times and my mom 2 (not counting study). Are you sure she lives in Holland, because The Netherlands isn't the same as Holland.

Holland is only a part of the Netherlands. Holland is used so much, because it is histroricle the most inportant part. Rotterdam and Amsterdam are there and the most people live there. You have North and South Holland [link] [link]
The extra confusing part is that we also use Holland for The Netherlands often, because it sounds better in show names (Holland got talend and the voice of Holland)

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-21 19:22:38 +0000 UTC]

oh, well i think asia lived in south holland. but I asked her what the difference was, and she said there was no difference. we have America's got talent, haha. If holland isn't part of the netherlands, then what is the netherlands?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-21 19:41:45 +0000 UTC]

Holland is part of the Netherlands. North and South holland are provincies. On those links you could see the whole Netherlands (except the parts in South America). Actually the Netherlands (Alos Low Lands) are netherlands Belgium and Luxemburg. (It was their name when they were part of Spain ) Now The Netherlands is just Netherland. The official name of the Netherlands is: The Kindom of United Netherlands, but that is a bit to long.

wow, i didn't know that. Im learning quite alot, haha. The "kingdom" reminds me of a fairytale movie. We dont have a kingdom, king, or queen. We just have the lands, and presidents.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dwarfthrowing In reply to kataangavatar [2010-11-22 15:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Kingdoms are inly in old countries like the UK, Belgium, Norway.. France was a monarch, but they killed them all in their revolution.
Howmany presidents have their bein? Way to much probably. We had 3 kings and 2 queens (without a king, all those kings had their own queen) The queen has only a ceremonial purpose. It is cheaper than a president. Wich is kind of funny. Your president gets more paid and it is a new one all the time. That needs money for moving and new furniture. Our queen is saving. Noble familys are still here, but no one knows who they are and they have no special rights anymore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-22 21:11:55 +0000 UTC]

I actually dont even know how many presidents there have been. I believe 42, or 52. Even though we learn the presidents in order, i've never took the time to count them, haha. but no, they dont really move, or spend money on furniture. The government takes the president's family for free on a plane they call "air force 1". any plane that the president gets on is given that name. And the president's family rides on air force 1 to the White House in Washington DC, which stands or "district of Columbia" which is near New York almost, like maybe 5 states off. But they stay at the White House, which is where every president stays at. i've been to the white house before. Its really big. They have many helicopters there, so if the president wants to go back home, he can get on one, and all the helicopters leave at the same time, that way no one knows which one hes on. But the White House already has everything they need. But there is spending involved, its just not a big factor. They mostly spend on the government and markets. markets as in the economic term: alot of businesses, not a store. The reason why we have so many presidents is because they can only stay in office for 2 terms. a term is 4 years. after that four years, we vote for another president. we ask ourselves Do we want to keep that president for another term? or do we want to have a new one? and if a president dies in office, the Vice president becomes the new president. They can stay in for 2 years, and still be president afterwards for 1 or 2 terms. So the president can only last 4, 8, or 10 years. Then we get a new one. Our last presidents are making our economy go down the toilet. So its good that we can get rid of them to get a new, better one, sometimes.

Yes I know your economic is shit. On this kind of times I'm happy that I live in this cold and small country in Europe. No one in our class has the problem that both parents are jobless. My mother is jobless, but she stopped working years ago. We see the elections on the news, because in some way it is inportant to us. (How could we trade with the new president of the US?) But I really don't get what you people have against Obama. He is brilliant!

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-23 20:28:43 +0000 UTC]

It's half and half about liking and not liking him. He hasn't done anything to improve the economy so far. His slogan was "Time For a Change" and some people believe he's a suspected terrorist. If we let a terrorist who's promising a change will come, that may be bad. But so far, there hasn't been any change at all, which is still bad, because our economy needs to improve. And then the big oil spill happened. He really didn't do much about it. He spent alot of our money that was supposed to be for rebuilding our economy for Haiti, which is a nice thing, but we needed that, and he shouldn't have gave it all away. He is banning alot of rights, which is bad. So far, with him in office, our economy hasn't gotten any better. But some people like him. i don't really have any idea about him, i'm neutral. Just a but everyone's parent are divorced in my class, except mine, and their one parent works 1 or 2 jobs. Michigan is also cold, it is super freezing, i'm an iceball right now:/

I have some card where you see how big the US actually is with europe. The Netherlands is somewere in Canada then, but it is warmer then in Canada. I think it is a bit like New York over here, but I'm not sure. (New York lies somewere in Turkey then BTW) I think Obama did one really good thing and that was the medical Insurance. We have it all overhere and it works perfect!

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-23 22:15:14 +0000 UTC]

No, Canada, is colder, but Michigan is the state with the water all around it, and it's shaped like a glove. it's right underneath Canada. So it's almost the same temperature. New York has the same temperature also. We lost our medical insurance with his plan, and had to get a different medical insurance, i'm not sure what it's called. But that didn't really hurt us, because we still got the insurance. My family both likes and dislikes him, we don't really have a side. How do you know Obama's medical insurance? Do they put it on an english TV channel?

Nope dutch tv. Something like that is big. I even know about those weird tea parties (who don't have really much to do with the origenal) But we have a lot of news from around the world. A lot of illigal immigrant from Turkey in Greece. The Frensh are on strike (again). A colloseum in Pompeii colopsided. The mines in Chille. Our country is so small that it would always be cucumber time (time that there isn't happening anything in the world) if we would only broadcast our own news. I do have BBC 1 and 2 on my tv. Also 2 german ,1 Frensh, 1 Spanish (I don't know why) and 2 Belgian channals. Most of the english shows we broadcast we only subtitle. Not like the Germans and Frensh who are dubbing everything. (Frensh NCIS? I saw it and it was kind of funny) Damn! It would be cold around your hause! I live near the sea and that makes it never getting really cold. It doesn't get much colder then -1 degrees centigrade. I don't know how much that is on Fahrenheit. 0 degrees C is freezing water and 100 degrees C is boiling water. It is 372 degrees (or something) to degrees Kelvin what is based on the ultamite freezing point. (It doesn't get any colder then 0 degrees K) Kelvin is used in physics stuff. (You may already know this, but I don't know that)

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-11-24 15:51:21 +0000 UTC]

haha, yeah I already know that, but Fahrenheit is a bit different..I have a thermometer that tells both temps, and right now its 62 degrees F, or 16 degrees C, and thats inside my house. Outside its like 30 degrees F. Which would be exactly 0 degrees C. Im not actually an iceball, ahahaha, but i feel like one. We don't really talk about foreign countries on the news, but for a few minutes, and the rest of the days news is focused on the US. I don't know why, most people say that they know all about American famous people, and what is going on in America, but for some reason, we only focus on ourselves, unless a tragedy happens such as an earthquake or hurricane. We have a spanish channel, and thats it. But we do know famous people in London, because they speak English too. But thats it, only US and London. Ive never watched the spanish channel because I hardly know spanish, and they only play soap-operas on there for some reason. Also I have like 200 english channels, so it's weird that we don't have any other language channel.

Ilse de Lange (I know people outside the Netherlands know her), Thijs van Leer (ask your parents), The Flying Dutchman! In the Amams Famaly: Lurch (Don't know that guys name), van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Steen, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. You don't know Tolkien OMG! Don't know Lord of the Rings!!!!! All those movies/ books I said are pritty famous here in Europe. It often happens that I don't know something is dutch.

No, I dont even know how to say these, haha. The Flying Dutchman is a cartoon character in Spongebob, and thats how I know him, sorta. Van Gogh, yeah I know him, but he died a very long time ago. Antoni van Leeunwenhoek, holy cow thats a long name, i know him from my science class, also died along time ago. Tolkien, no. I know Lord of the Rings, but I've never heard of Tolkien. Thats it. My parents definitely do not know...thijs van leer, or how to pronounce that, haaha. I just asked a group of people on Facebook, a website, and everyone says they dont know any of them. I know Van gogh because im an artist, but were on deviantart, so you already know that, ahaha. and I pay attention in science, so thats how i know leeunwenhoek.

o.0' Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings. The flyng dutchmen was real. I know Facebook. And Thijs van leer is a famous flutist. (Most known in America, but probably not where you live) No Rembrandt!! [link] or Vermeer??[link] (I forgot Escher [link] ) I tought even people in America knew them. They are hanging around the globe! Go to a good museum and ask who they are. People will look at you like "you don't know?" Serious.... Well I think one thing is even, because I don't know more American painters then Andy Warhole.

They are like the most famous painters in the history of art. (I'm not kidding) I think it depends on where you live. I think that if you live in a city like New York you do know.

Hahah, no, Most museums are in national parks. But they are history museums, not art museums. I've heard of art museums in Washington DC when I went there, but I couldn't see inside. I couldn't even pronounce those names, so I'm sure know one knows who they are, and I'm art crazy, I know alot of artists. Most people don't leave America. So I probably wont ever go to London. And I'm too young to just take a trip to a different continent. I wanted to know your age because you said 'your class' and I just wondered how you knew this stuff, if you were a student, or a teacher majoring in foreign history or something.

I can say van gogh right. We probably just say it differently than you do. Asia says it like we do. I don't know what you mean by the english industrial revolution. because we have alot of industrial changes. But mostly in school over here, we learn math (our main subject), science, and english/language arts. we have history every other year. This is my first year taking economics. And then we have to take a health class some year. And then we choose 2 out of art, band, technology, wood-shop, or drama as an elective. but my school is small with about 100 kids in my graduating class, and most schools around here has 500 or more kids in their graduating class. So I think thats why my school doesn't have that many classes. You have visited already 3 continents?? Over here, like no one leaves america until their old. Most kids don't even leave the US unless they were born somewhere else other than the US. I dont even know if you can leave until your 18. And it would cost wayyyy too much money. yeah, ij sounds like 'I' or 'eye' over there. But over here its a 'J' like 'g', or a 'udge' sound. very different.

You guys don't even get the 'van' my father is always put by the v in the name list when he should have been put by the L! It doesn't cost that much (I believe) My father goes to America every year. And It is not that hard to visit 3 continents. I mean Egypt isn't that far, but Egypt is Amfrica. And we are quite rich here in the Netherlands. XD. We don't heve gettos (the word getto comes frome a district in Venice. I know that kind of stuff) and we don't have China towns (not that that has anything to do with it). Our difference in poor and rich are smaller and it is just very normal to travel a lot. I have been in all the west-europian countries.

The plane ticket costs alot of money. Asia told me that she was wealthy in the Netherlands, but when she came over here, she gets money from her step mom now. and she doesn't earn that much, so now shes really poor that she can't afford another ticket to go back to Holland. She says that right now, she likes it better in America because of the people and rights, but when she's older, she'll move back to Holland so she can earn a living. It depends on where you live on how well the economy is doing. In Michigan, theres a few ghettos, but I don't live in one. When I went to Georgia, it's very fancy and up-scale. They have money. In Alabama, everyone has money only because everything is so cheap, that they don't have to pay much, its very old country there. in Florida, its almost similar to Michigan, where theres good and bad in it. In Washington DC, theres either people who have money, or people who have no money at all, and are homeless. So many hobos. People say alot "The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer." There is no China towns around here. There might be some in California, but I'm not sure. California is all the way over on the other side of the US. Over here, not too many people travel. It's even a big thing for people to travel to other states. Even a bigger thing to travel countries. Traveling continents is huge, a once-in-a-life-time oppurtunity that not to many people get. It's amazing that you've done it 3 times. And by the way, Happy Thanksgiving, that was yesterday, I went camping about an hour away from my house into northern Michigan, it was fun.

Wait I've been like a thousand times in Europe since I live there. I once went to Asia and went 2 to Egypt. I never go camping (with my family), because we don't really like it. On holiday you want to relax not standing in a row for the toilet. It is strange to hear travalling isn't normal. Here we go at least one time every year to another country Except those with less amount of money, but then you can still visit Belgium for a day. Wich reminds my of something I read some days ago. There are Americans who think that Belgium is made up by the CSI and the UK by Walt Disney. WTF! Over there people have strange theories. Belgium does exist.

People don't normally go camping on holidays, just my family does, and we don't stand in lines or toilets, haha, we have a log cabin. It's the same as our house but really small, and we only stay up there a few times out of the year. So it's just like staying in a house, but its in the woods. Its really nice and cozy. Oh, well of course we travel at least once a year, most people do, just not all the time. Most people take a trip to a different state during the summer. But usually only once a year. Iv'e never heard that story. Belgium is well known, mostly from the war, I have done a report in school on Belgium. But I have heard a story that some one (I don't no where from, but I believe Germany) was trying to say that the holocaust was all made up. WHAT!?!?!@!@ how can you try to cover something like that up? Crazy German person, or possibly American person.

I'm not saying you, but other Americans. BeNeLux meanselgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. (see the first 2 letters of each country name. And in that way we are famaly with Belgians and Luxembourgers. We make jokes about the Belgians. XD. And they think we think they are stupid. First see then believe is a dutch saying. When I say something like: "I live in Rotterdam." People who are "first see, then believe" will say something like: "I want to see your home there then!" This is a bit dramatic, but it is what it means.

Ohhh, over here, we have that saying too, but a little different. It's "you have to see it to believe it." Asia told me something about the queen who's name sounded like BeNeLux, so thats why I thought it was the queen. Hahaha, oops. I know what you mean, mexicans think that americans discriminate them, but we really don't. Or even Canadians.

It is like a joke >_> Well Europe is more like Belarus.. who?" What? Well, yeah Canada, and who are you asking about? What do you hear? Whats a joke? Who's Belarus? It is that it's like everybody is forgetting Canada. You know it is there, but most of the time you don't think about it. Yeah Belarus is a country. We call it Wit Rusland (white russia) here in the Netherlands. Since you don't know what it was an I can't point it out on a map. It is really who?? O wait I see the problem it is what?? ofcourse -.- countrys are no who's. And maybe it is not a big joke where you live since it's close by Canada. WAIT you don't know what a joke is?? Say me you're kidding! I'm confusing. I'm pretty bad at telling stories so it's not your foult.

Nobody really talks about Canada over here either, but it's really not that forgotten. Oh, so Belarus is like a place? Ohhhhh, yeah, 'it is what?' I didn't know it was a country, i thought it must have been a person. No, it's not a joke over here, but no one really talks about it. Yeah, of course I know what a joke is, ahahhaha, and it's not your fault either, I just read it wrote it wrong, and said "whats a joke?", instead of "what is the joke?"

We have a lot more of "almost forgotten" countries around here. Latvia, Estonia, Lithuana, Ukarine, Serbia and so on. x.x Can't point them out on a map.

Lithuania, Ukraine, and Serbia are known over here, but not the other ones. hhaah, I'm running out of things to say. Umm, America's everyday life is i'm guessing the same as yours. Kids get up, go to school for about 8 hours, go home, do homework, hang out with friends at their houses, or go to the mall. Adults get up, go to work, go home, eat dinner, and really thats about it. Every day. Sounds quite boring. But we have fun. Asia said she danced alot, and went outside all the time. We don't really go outside that much, except little kids. Asia showed me one of the dances online, and she tried to teach me how to do it. Me, Asia, and this other girl named Emily (which is also my name) video taped us doing the dance, and it looked so cool. Our feet were all in sync. haha.

You mean jump stile?? I did that, but I don't know how enymore. Dutch dancing is discos are strange compared what you do. We jump up and down and that's it. I'm not really an outgoing person, but 3 parties say enough. I have to say that we work less in the Netherlands than you do. My father is done working at 6 o' clock, but then he has to treval a while till he gets home at half past six. And he gets every to weeka a weekend of and a wednesday of. Still I'm pritty rich. We work the lowest amount of hours in europe if I remember correctly. But get paid a lot more that most europian countries.

Yeah, it was called jump style. It is VERY different from the way we dance. We move our whole bodies, and you guys jump with your legs. I'm a very outgoing person, but i don't party. Parting over here mostly means smoking and drinking, and I don't do that. But I know how over there, its legal. I get up at 5:30 in the morning, and dad gets up at 5. He leaves at 6, and I leave at 7. My dad's work starts at 7 or 8, i forget. But he gets home at 5. My mom goes to work whenever people call her in because shes a hairdresser, so if someone wants her to do her hair, she'll just drive up there and go home when she's done. My dad's work is about an hour away from my house. He works Monday-Friday. so it's not that much. My dad used to work for Delphi, which I don't know if you heard of it, but its the US's automotive industry. And then they had hundreds of layoffs in GM (Delphi) and my dad was one of them. So we used to have money, but after he lost his job, we had to watch our money. He just got this new job, so we are slowly getting better. But there is so many people over here who are broke and in debt, so we are doing good compared to everyone else.

Yeah! Well jumpsite is not hip anymore and nobody does it. You leave before I get up! (If you would make the moring times the same) I don't know enybody who has gone jobless because of the crisis. And I made a miscount. I've been in 4 continents. I've been in North-America. Forgot Martinique. x.x

kataangavatar In reply to dwarfthrowing [2010-12-02 22:31:01 +0000 UTC]

oh, wow. I don't know where Martinique is at. I don't know how you could forget about going to a different continent, over here, thats like a really big thing. Because Asia came from a different continent, everyone is amazed by her. But I was her friend before I even knew she came from a different country, so that's why she knows I am her best friend: because I like her as a friend rather than liking her because she came from a different country. Nobody does it?? if I got super rich, and could leave school, and buy a plane ticket, and fly over to Holland, then I would do jumpstyle everyday. Hahahah, it looks so different and fun!! Well, first I'd have to learn it first because I forgot how to do it, and plus I could only do like 20 seconds of it. Hundreds of people have gone jobless because of it. The reason why our economy is so poor is because of the thousands of layoffs. When I rode the bus to school, I would hear on the radio the number of joblosses of General Motors, or GM (which is only in Michigan) in a week and it would be up to 100 jobs lost in a week. This went on for months. It was all because of the bankruptcy that made them lose their jobs. And i hate getting up early, i feel like crap in the morning.
