Yeah. They are fun if you go with a bunch of friends (or even just a few) and have someone to hang out with. I don't know if I would ever go with JUST a date (assuming I was still able to go to a dance). Too many things can go bad, and then you're alone the rest of the night. The more people you know, and can dance with, the better in my opinion.

Yeah. Like I said, the more people you're gonna know at the dance, the more likely it is you'll have a good time, especially if something goes wrong with one member of the group, or a section of the group.

For example, the Valentine's dance I went to, my boyfriend broke up with me right before. Thankfully, I didn't really care, and he put it so abstractly while I was giving directions to the restaurant we were eating at I didn't notice at first. Otherwise, if I wasn't going with two of my friends, I wouldn't have had that great a night.
