Thanks! Actually though, I do want to submit something for the contest, so (if I can), I submit Chrysanthemum . It WAS submitted before the deadline after all.

Did you see my comment on your latest scrap? I'm really sorry for not being clear enough in my contest rules, but I'm afraid that this isn't what I was looking for in my contest. It may be a bit out of place if I sign it up for the competition, because everybody else did character drawings. Do you still want me to put it in the running anyway? The decision is yours. (either way can be workable, and I'll still give you my two cents, regardless. ) I'm holding up my announcement of closure until I process your reply, just so you know.

Hmm, no, I'll just play by the rules (shoulda paid more attention to the rules), but, anyway it was a good excuse to practice. Thanks.

That's a good, mature decision, I'd say. I'm glad I was able to give a member of DeviantART an excuse to work on some art.
(Your situation still isn't half as bad as it could have been- an art thief tried to enter my contest, and with something that was done before that one even found out about the competition.)

That's just pitiful, when I hear about people stealing art, I just want to laugh at them, I mean, how stupid can they be if they can't even draw? And yet, it's so dishonest, at least they didn't try to sell it.

The Prince pointed me out to you eh? I must be getting good at this, then. I will see what I can do for constructive criticism, but one thing first: is there anything in particular that you want critique on, or are you just looking for advice in general? If there's something specific, I'll see what I can do.

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-08 02:44:15 +0000 UTC]
Originally, I was actually thinking of using both styles in one drawing, so neither style takes domination over the other. We can divide it into parts. For example, I can focus on hair and you on anatomy. Something like that. And don't worry about compatibility of style; I'm just as flexible with PowerPoint as most Photoshoppers are with their own program so that's not a problem.
Also, I think it would look better if you came up with the concept, being the pensive one between the two of us.
I wanna do something totally different from what we usually do, as in a completely different style than our current ones.
I've got a week of free time, so I'm virtually available whenever you would find convenient.

Okay, how about I draw the bodies and design the clothes, and you'll add everything for the faces? I'll draw the heads blank so you can do with them as you see fit.
I'm pretty much free on Wednesdays and Fridays after school, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and I'll try to get these figures ready for you today. I have some good ideas for a bold new design or two.

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-09 06:46:07 +0000 UTC]
Two bold designs sound good. ^_^
Alright. What style we imitating? (It'd be good if you could give me a link to a sample of the style, not necessarily what we're going to draw but something similar.)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-09 10:41:15 +0000 UTC]
Well, I myself do NOT believe in mimicing or imitation exactly, in any way shape or form, but the style I'm thinking of takes its primary inspirations from the following:
Bleach- [link]
Rockman X: Command Mission- [link] (except probably not as robotic)
Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia: [link] [link]
As you can see, it's going to be big on bold and unusual, yet dramatic clothing, and an overall heroic feel with just a dash of maverick flair. ^^

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-09 11:22:35 +0000 UTC]
You're talking atmosphere. That was useful too, but what I meant was the physical style, as in what it looks like it was done with and what kind of details distinguish it from the rest (i.e. thick lineart, black lines, shounen, soft shading, etc).
(Had the same misunderstanding with my friend when we were starting our webcomic...)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-09 12:08:38 +0000 UTC]
It would still be a shounen style, and it would be the same 7.5 head proportions I've been using, because that's what I'm most comfortable with. I'm thinking it will be inked with what is becoming my signature Blanke Vector style, but the catch is, I'd like to try and minimize soft shading this time. Maybe some particle lighting effects will be present, but try to think of the coloring as more authentic cel shading, as opposed to the sort of 2.5 dimensional style I normally color with.

Okay then. ...but don't you think it'd be more fun if we were to step out of our little comfort zones? I mean, just for the heck of it.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-09 13:26:58 +0000 UTC]
Do you really want to work with anything less than 7.5 heads? (anything over that looks too long for me... ) I see your point, but just because we're trying something new doesn't mean we have to abandon what's been working for us so far. Being too caught up in change is every bit as dangerous as obsessing over every little tradition. I will try to tone down my lineart a bit, so it doesn't make it look like I'm doing all the work, and drawing bodies first, then waiting for the heads is actually working backwards for me. (I always base everything else about the drawing off of how the eyes and face turn out, now I get to focus solely on body language. ) Besides, not having soft edges to rely on will be quite a challenge for me at least, now that I'm so used to the cleanliness of Photoshop. Yeah. I'm changing that to NO soft shading at all. That's a handicap I haven't worked with since I outgrew Paint. The question is, how much should I leave open so that you can challenge yourself, too?

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-09 13:45:39 +0000 UTC]
Regarding the 7.5 heads, I'm okay with that (I do 7 flat btw).
Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but are you shifting programs ("...now that I'm so used to the cleanliness of Photoshop")? (I'm not asking you to go that far.)
Anyway, I think that before we can decide on anything else, we get a concept to work on, maybe like a reeaaalllyyy rough 1-minute sketch. I think it'll be easier to decide from then on. I still don't know what we're drawing.
Yeah, bear with me, I'm kind'a slow...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-09 19:56:18 +0000 UTC]
No, I'm not shifting programs. I used MS Paint in the days before I had Photoshop. In THOSE days, I didn't use any soft edges either, because I couldn't. Today, it would be interesting for me to try more of a cutout look.
Here's the basic layout I'm thinking of with two characters. [link] The costumes aren't nearly as detailed as they will be, and the one in back will take up a better part of the background, but there are the poses and composition I have at this point. One of them has a real clean-cut outfit, and the other is more tattered. Maybe one could have white over black for the outfit, and the other will have vice versa? Then we could rely on their hair, eyes, and scarves to bring out appropriate colors? At this point, gender was not a factor, so I can still modify the clothes to match a female or two, as well.

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-10 14:39:45 +0000 UTC]
Brilliant as ever!
Alright then, here's my take. For the background and foreground characters, one could be male and the latter female. This will prove a challenge to me as you have seen that most of my close-up drawings aren't males.
For the bodies, your attention will be mostly on the female's body, so I think it'd be a great way to compel you to get some more of those curves going.
For the coloring, I'll see what you come up with and work from there. Keep updating your scraps, this way, we can work at virtually the same time.

Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-10 14:56:50 +0000 UTC]
Okay, the female will be in the background, because I can honestly draw girl butts as easily as breathing, so the foreground one would be too easy, and possibly too distracting, and the background one will force me to really work on drawing the arms. (and I'll have the challenge of keeping her elegant and feminine underneath that outfit. ) The girl will have the white on black, and the guy will have black on white. The girl will have either a red scarf, or a red belt. The guy will have either a blue or a green scarf. As for hair and eye color for them, I have no clue how to complement that, but I think some sort of multi-colored eyes on the girl in the background could set the atmosphere nicely.

Prince-of-Powerpoint In reply to Blanke [2006-09-10 15:30:51 +0000 UTC]
(I vote blue for the guy's scarf!!)
With the eyes, I'll worry about that. (Heads'r MINE, mwahahaha!) Okay, so what kind of drama are we going for? Is it going to be like a good-girl-bad-guy or bad-girl-bad-guy or bad-girl-good-guy, etc...?

Blanke In reply to Prince-of-Powerpoint [2006-09-10 16:09:06 +0000 UTC]
They'd both be good, but they wouldn't see eye to eye right away. They're as different as bookends in personality, yet there is still some common ground somewhere between them, in their beliefs. The guy has a belief that he is must prove is true, and the girl has a belief that she seeks to uphold as more questionable morals attempt to drown it out. And, if there is going to be any chemistry between them, then he has to save the "knight in shining armor" stuff until he actually reaches her level.

I'm not going to say too much on personality, because too many specifics kill creativity. Here's a few basic qualities I had in mind with them, now how you interpret those qualities is up to you.
The guy:
-good sense of justice
-brave, impulsive
-fighter, doesn't compromise his morals for what he wants.
-honest
-talented, but inexperienced, and still learning.
-tenacious, oblivious to unfavorable odds, for better or for worse
The girl
-strong sense of right and wrong
-decisive
-speaks her mind, sometimes bluntly.
-generous, but doesn't like to show it.
-loyal, but it has to be earned- opens up to others slowly.
-fights only because she has to.
-more experienced and knowledgable than the guy, just for the sake of comparison

No problem! It definitely deserved it in my book. Actually, now that I think about it, you sort of made Void look like Gannondorf from Zelda: Ocarina of Time, there. ^^ That makes me like this one even more, now, because it's like one of my characters might actually be comparable to a classic one. (Or maybe I'm just reading too deeply into this. )

Lol, now that I look at it I guess he does. I always start with the skin when I color a character, just personal preference, and it turned out to be kind of corpse-like (which is pretty evil, but I wanted him to look ALIVE and evil), so I was looking for a color to balance him out-- thus the red of his hair. My brother actually asked me if it was Ganondorf. He's the Zelda player in the house. ^^

And there are still plenty characters I haven't drawn here yet, too. 0_0 Here are a couple more that you forgot, or I never bothered to drop the names of:
Jason: The blue haired kid with the huge lance on this page-[link] He's the hero of the manga, as well as Ares' younger brother.
Aion:[link]
The villain that Ares is fighting at the beginning of the manga right now. A blackhearted intellectual.
Gared: [link]
The Black Knight, a villain who is very loyal to whatever side he thinks is going to win.
Bailey:
[link]
Skye is Jason's reserved love interest, and Bailey is the more open love interest, for an indecisive triangle. (Not two-timing, because he doesn't actually go out with either one until he makes up his mind at the end. ) Bailey is generally pretty smart, but she does have an airhead side to her, too.
Iris-
[link]
The only summon I have in a deviation right now, Iris is Bailey's personal summon, and she's light elemental. (I'm indecisive on what her actual outfit will be, so you can just draw whatever, if you decide to use her.)
I think that's all I have right now. Are there any of those you'd like to know some more about before you get started?
