Hi, I've got a question about journal titles, if anyone wants to take a shot? I'm a software developer with HTML/CSS/Javascript experience, so please be as technical as you like
I'd like to move the Journal title out of the JournalTop div and into the header area. So far as I can figure out, I can't add any HTML content to JournalTop, I can only manipulate it with CSS.
I want to create a custom header with a fancy layout, and insert the Journal title into that layout.
Is this possible? Can I, for example, create a div with a certain class, and expect DA to insert the blog title into that class? Or is there a template string I can use in my header HTML, JSP style?

For gruze, try this
.gr-top h2{
background:#color url('imageURL')top center no-repeat; (adjust positioning)
width:##px; (put in width of image)
height:##px; (put in height of image)
padding:##px; (adjust as needed)
margin:##px; (adjust)
position:relative/absolute; (use whichever suits your needs)
top:##px; (adjust)
}
Adjusting the padding and positioning should get your text where you want it on the image. For old school journal use .journaltop instead of .gr-top (I think, I stopped using old school long ago)
A separate div in your header should work too, however, it would likely be more work to get it where you want. If you use gruze, there are more box structures with editable sections which you can layer images.
Does this help? Hope I answered your question.

Hi GillianIvy - thanks for the detailed response
I didn't want to use fixed positioning if I could help it, but I'm coming to the conclusion that I'll have to (and that my predjudices about it are unfounded!).
I'm curious about your comment re. a seperate div in the header. If I position a div in the header, how do I get the journal's title text to appear in it?

gillianivyart In reply to monstroooo [2011-06-20 12:47:38 +0000 UTC]
It's a little tricky. You'll need to make a separate div to hold your text in it
/header/
/journal entry/
/footer/
This puts your header image outside the box of your text giving you more maneuverability.

Hmm, I think you've misunderstood the problem (that, or I've misunderstood your answer!)
I'm OK with putting an image in the header, and I'm OK putting static text in the header. I know how to structure my header to get the layout I want, and how to style it appropriately.
The question is whether I can take the text that dA inserts in the
title node, and insert it into a div node of my choosing.
I don't think there's any way to do that, but that's my question nevertheless

Unless that's exactly what you're trying to show me in the "newTEXT" div, but that doesn't quite add up in my mind...

Now I might be confused. Are you trying to make a duplicate div of the existing div? I think I did misunderstand the query. Here's two people who might be able to better help at that than I: `ginkgografix & =somrat . They might know what you mean. Sorries ;D

You could just use absolute/relative positioning to move the journal title so it's in that area...to be honest, I use the gruze layout. In terms of HTML, though, as far as I can tell dA doesn't really let you do much there.

mm, that's what I'm suspecting - I'm just hoping some genius knows a trick
Absolute positioning is always a bit dodgy, I'm loath to use it unless absolutely* neccessary

dodgy how? (I love the z-index control so much.)

monstroooo In reply to neurotype-on-discord [2011-06-19 16:09:45 +0000 UTC]
Dodgy because it's easy to ruin a layout. Absolute layout is OK if you're working with a fixed screen size, but it can be problematic if the content is stretched or squeezed too much. Plus, when you start overlapping content or moving it outside of its layout box, different browsers can render it differently.
Z-index can help, and for something limited like pushing the title out of JournalTop, it might be enough...

Sometimes when I like to use the absolute property with fluid layouts I kinda try using margins and paddings with the (figure)% instead of (figure)px .. it helps keep things a little bit in order

monstroooo In reply to Nesmaty [2011-06-20 11:50:04 +0000 UTC]
It's still an option - but you're still overriding the brower's flow layout, so you're still subject to cross-browser problems.
Fixed positions are something I don't like at all, in princple. But in this case, as there's no other options available, I'll have to grin and bear it I think
Thanks for the comment!

Aaah. Yes, that's why I enjoy relative positioning...but it's true, some browsers don't do it well. :/ I wish the code to control display for resolution/browser worked better.
The title would still technically be in journaltop, it'd just display elsewhere. I've made at least one skin that involves lots of screwing with the default, as have others--you may want to check out how those turned out.

I'd never realised you were a skinner - there's some nice stuff in your gallery
I've been thinking about it over the weekend, and I think I will experiment with relative positioning. Most of the x/ys in the blog header are fixed anyway, so it should come out OK.
Thanks for the discussion

Sorry if I spammed the whole group with this reply already, as I was replying to the individuals who commented since the threads might not be visible to everybody.
I had asked if anyone knew how to make vanity urls automatically switch to the new user on installing a journal. And the answer was to simply do your own. Well, I made a snippet which everyone can use if they like.

Okay, I see everybody always doing the nav links Note me/gallery/journal/add/etc and it automatically adds the user's info without typing in your whole code. How is this done? I'm sure it's something simple and obvious...

No, I mean the code that does it automatically. I notice many times that I'll install someone's skin and it will already have my username in there. I know there's gotta be some code to make it work???
As for the last line, I was just being silly, keeping an eye on you... best keep two eyes instead.

That's what =oblivion00 was saying, but untested. I'll have to make a test journal that we can check out for each other. Would be such a simple thing! Though I'm sure I'd made skins previously with my links in them and would see my links still in the user's version instead of their own. And really, don't get feedback on that sort of thing.
