For most of my deviations I use Painttool SAI because strokes are much smoother since I like working with rapid and messy strokes xD Photoshop likes to commit suicide on me for drawing things, but it's good for colour adjustment functions
For the realism/ semi realism, here's a progress shot from something a while ago (PREPARE TO BE HORRIFIED AHAHAHHA) : fav.me/d68usm7
For the monochromatic works I REALLLY roughly sketch down the shapes (I swear it's so rough it might not qualify as a sketch ahaha) and then fill the bg with any medium shade. I blot out all the distinctly different-toned solid shapes with the 'sketch' as my guide and turn it off once I get my shapes. Then I just about mash and bash the blobs into shape.   Pretty much move things about and rescale too as necessary ahahah (For that reason I'm devastating at traditional art)
