Das ist gut! That is the extent of my knowledge of the German language.

lol thats more than enough. life is too short to learn german

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 02:17:58 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I always wanted to learn German proper. Is it true that depending upon the state, the dialect of German will change?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 02:26:43 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah! not only depending on the state though. The town next to my hometown cant understand some words we say in my hometown because its only spoken here in my hometown. I come from the most northern part of bavaria (from a VERY small town!), then i moved to munich at some point (which is south) and people knew right away where I was from! even though I gave my best to speak perfect high german people heard and noticed where I was from. also when i went to some smaller villages in bavaria i couldnt understand what the people were saying o_O
even though its still the same state. really crazy. but isnt that the case in every country? in america people also have hundrets of different dialects and in japan too. i thought its normal in every country. How about france?

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 02:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Not really, the accent might change a bit but such pronounced difference only happens country to country. For example, we both would struggle to understand Aussie English since it is almost a language on its own.

You have confirmed my worst fears. Even if I learn German, I am well and truly fucked. I will resort to English and sign language.

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 03:04:22 +0000 UTC]

yup english is totally fine. people in most developed countries speak english anyway so its very useful but german is kind of pointless. other useful languages are chinese and spanish
did you know that sign language is also differnt from country to country? yes - sign language actually has different languages!

Oh well, fuck me! This is insane. I am going to stay in Antractica and have my penguin stew. So, you are a language trainer by profession? Do you teach other languages apart from English?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 03:14:37 +0000 UTC]

nice how you keep up the joke of your place of living
yeah I am the chief instructor of an english cram school.
could teach german but i dont want to...cuz i hate it....
german is too fucking complicated, a pain in the ass to explain and
often just doesnt make any sense.
so i stick to english ^^
... which includes 26% germanic though lol
luckily not the fuck up german grammar though so there is that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 03:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Why is it a joke? There is a sizeable population of us in Antractica? We even have our own stock trading center. German grammar is not for the faint of heart. There are so many variations depending upon the gender of the subject that it can get confusing. It is not impossible though. It's just that, unless you can give it sufficient time, you will never be good at it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 03:57:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh some people on DA dont want to disclose their name or place and therefor type in "fake" names. sorry I am not good in geography, didnt know you have more than ice in Antarctica, because your photos show lush nature.
even germans make many grammar mistakes on a daily basis so unless you live there for many years i think its impossible. english on the other hand is so easy that most people nowadays learn it just by watching movies and playing games.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 04:54:26 +0000 UTC]

Of course, it does! You have never been to Antarctica!

Everyone makes mistakes in grammar. Some of the grammatical mistakes that people do makes me face palm. English is easier to learn since whether you like it or not, it is everywhere. If you are in computer science especially, almost everything is in English. Also, Hollywood is there to teach you.

I sadly never had the chance to go anywhere in the world. lived the first 23 years of my life in my shitty tiny hometown, moved to munich for 3-4 years and then to japan. but before i came to japan i actually never even went on vacation anywhere else. my family never had the money to do so. so on holidays i just stayed at home or in close proximity to my town...which is why i sadly dont know shit about the world. but for exactly that reason i wanted to get more experience and moved to japan. to see and learn more

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 07:16:11 +0000 UTC]

I understand your situation. It's great that you want to see the world since nothing really teaches you as much as travelling to new places. It challenges your beliefs. That is important. It expands your horizon and makes you a hardier person. I also want to travel the world before I am an old man. I want to go to Japan as well since I love the artwork from there and want to see cherry  blossoms. Have you seen cherry blossoms?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 08:23:25 +0000 UTC]

good luck going to japan. its a wonderfully beautiful place to visit (but a shitty hell to live in. trust me!)
yeah i have seen cherry blossoms ^^
now that you mention it...i never took photos of them....
i was very busy, hard working at the time of them blossoming. they only blossom for one week every year!

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 08:29:50 +0000 UTC]

Why would you say it is a shitty place to live? I want stay in Tokyo for a year.

Well, next year it is then!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 13:09:34 +0000 UTC]

that is a VERY long story. even when we would sit in a room together it would take more than an hour to explain in detail but short. foreigners i meet who just hang out here for a while are ultra happy but those who live here want to go home and are mostly depressed. many many deep reasons that are difficult to explain to someone who doesnt understand the deeper workings of the japanese culture

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 14:08:30 +0000 UTC]

I think its because the culture is so different from our own. Things move according to a strict schedule and several aspects of their living is highly ritualised. I might be wrong but that is what I think is the problem.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 14:12:02 +0000 UTC]

ultra easily said - yes. but thats just one part of the whole deal. there are more issues like ignorance and irrationality

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clicketyclickclick In reply to TheScratcher [2015-08-20 14:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Could you please expand on the below two. Not sure what you mean by that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheScratcher In reply to Clicketyclickclick [2015-08-20 15:00:55 +0000 UTC]

they only do things by the book without thinking about it. the jap way is the jap way is the only way.
they have no life of their own. 90% of my students when asked about themselves, what they like, what they want to do, what hobbies they have, what they like about themselves and such - REALLY dont know how to answer. they dont even think about such things. only do their duties to the country, the company, the family, society. just robots doing their thing and also they just believe in everything they are told without thinking about it which makes them very ignorant. they think for example that places outside of japan are very dangerous and foreigners are dangerous and scary and shit. i have lots of actual experiences, stories to tell, and met many foreigners with equally sad experiences. its hard to live here as a foreigner.

Wow, that sounds quite dystopian if you think about it. I knew they have a top down approach to things but this is crazy. I am glad I was not born there.
