Eh, they don't want anything to do with me (except for V-One, of course) for the most part, so I keep a wary distance. Glad to see that An won it, though.

Yeah, she deserved it - but I think the real tragedy of this OCT was that we were all basically forced to drop it once school started. I think if we'd have either made it go faster, or taken things slower during the school year, a lot of people would have stayed involved. I know I would have.

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-19 01:17:22 +0000 UTC]

It upset me because, by round three, I was the only one who was still making time for it. I was still dedicated to the cause, and quite a bit so. So, I was heartbroken when I lost despite putting forth all the effort. And then later occurrences really just slapped me in the face and I decided to stay out.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-19 01:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really really rally regret my decision to drop out - if you could see the circumstances of my life at that time, you would understand I'm sure. But still, after seeing MY place in the tournament just get passed along to the finals via forfeits... god that makes me so mad I could rip some people apart and eat them. I KNOW I could have done better than those who didn't even put up a finished round - I really could have ended up in the finals, given Jack a proper death at the hands of a worthy opponent... but no, instead it all just fell apart. Very upsetting.

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-19 01:24:49 +0000 UTC]

A forfeit was what upset me the most, too. Plus the new judge's "critique" on my round three was offensive and of absolutely no help to me. It was, in fact, an insult. Losing to a quitter - even if the circumstances of their life is understandable - is never a fun experience. It's the biggest slap in the face that an OCT contributor can offer a former opponent. If you defeat someone, it's your PRIVILEGE to carry on in their place. I think that you should at least do the best you can for them. But, that's just me. I can name a few people who would snap my head off just for having this conversation.

Well, if they try, we'll send the reanimated corpses of Jack and Rottie after them!

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-19 02:44:33 +0000 UTC]

Pft, I completely disregarded it and wrote Rottie's story anyways. It's a work-in-progress, though.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-19 15:09:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm doing the same with Jack - I'm way too attached to my character to let him just slide away along with this anticlimactic contest.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-19 15:42:38 +0000 UTC]

I have split personality (which is why the new judge's review was so insulting). Rottie is BASED on what I imagined my other personality to be with. When she isn't psychopathic, you'll notice that she's very much like me. So, I'm extremely attached to her. She's something of a self representation, and I can't just throw her away because three people thought it would be a good idea.

And also, she's my baby.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-20 01:48:23 +0000 UTC]

That's really interesting, actually - I myself have a very strong connection to Jack, beginning before the games even came about. I don't know if you ever saw this final portrait I made, [link] but it basically explains what an important expression of myself Jack is. I have struggled with my own kind of insanity, especially when I was younger, and I really feel like I put my heart and soul into this character in order to express that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-20 03:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Aside from a very old persona of mine, Rottie is probably the first character that I've had such a strong connection to. Which makes me regret bringing he into a contest where she had a boring, anticlimatic death that gave her no glory. Her dog motiff was played with constantly (which is actually kinda fun at times) and I myself was picked on at times. For me, it all went downhill after round two. I can't say that I regret the OCT though, because I met V-One there and...well, wonderful shit happens sometimes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-21 16:18:05 +0000 UTC]

I have an array of varied and unusual characters in my mind, going way back to my childhood. I have tribes, bands, and armies all failing to peacefully coexist within my imagination, with the weaker and more delicate beings being trampled and torn apart by the most vicious and terrible monsters. My inner worlds are a brutal chaos of animal savagery, where strength and power is allotted according to those with the strongest, cruelest will to survive at any cost. Essentially, it's a lot like our world - and that's why Jack Rackam always comes out on top.

I'm not really tapped into what's going on with you and V-One, but you won't find me being as optimistic in regards to wonderful shit happening.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-21 18:21:46 +0000 UTC]

That's very interesting, actually.

V-One and I have been dating for...awhile now. I dated ~CeresMedici for about ten months, but he's the spoiled-brat, rich-kid type who had everything handed to him. So, he was neglectful, selfish, and overall not the kind of person you want to be in a relationship with when your dominant personality is actually very submissive and unable to take up for herself (the other personality is a different story altogether). He became particularly ill-spirited after the seventh month, which was also when I joined the tournament. So, I met V-One. Long story short, he kinda...stole me. In a good sort of way, though. I needed to leave the brat, and V-One gave me a reason to finally leave. Not many people know about it, because we kept it a secret for about two months before we finally told the people in the group's Skype chat. So, yeah. I guess it was kinda whorish of me.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-21 21:55:05 +0000 UTC]

Well that's cool! Congratulations.

I hope this doesn't sound too critical, but I was surprised when Rottie all of a sudden went from being a rugged survivalist to a love-sick devotee of Ame Gater. Perhaps the shift in writing style occurred as a result of new-found human feelings, I guess?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-21 22:04:26 +0000 UTC]

Rottie's feelings for Ame should have been incorporated into the audition, but we didn't know who the other tributes were then, so I couldn't do that. And the idea occurred to me during round two - not round one. It definitely hurt me, but I tried to be as careful with it as possible to give the impression that Rottie was still human and had feelings besides anger, pain, hunger, etc. Originally, there was very little divide between her and the Rottweiler (her other personality/the voice in her head). By round three, there was differentiation between them, where Rottie had a caring heart, a family that she needed to go back to, and someone she wanted to love and be loved by. The Rottweiler is the harsh, survivalist side of them who is fully capable of aggression and murder.

Also known as, I threw together a character based on my other personality specifically for the tournament (and a roleplay that never happened) and she didn't really get any character development until round two. Her canon story (which is currently in-progress here: [link] ) has much more development and whatnot in it. And her lover/object of obsession is V-One's character, Andrew. He also has fairly severe split personality, so he's more likely to SURVIVE a relationship with Rottie than Ame would be. I really regret ever tying in Ame in, in retrospect, but I thought it was necessary at the time.

Wall of text for the win.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-21 23:48:14 +0000 UTC]

That clarifies things a bit - I definitely didn't develop Jack's backstory as much as I would have liked (of course, having to keep things relatively PG-13 brought some limitations). Also, it took me a while to figure out the roles Miss Lavender and Edgar played in all of it. When I do get it expanded enough though, I'd love to share it with you & V.

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-22 00:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Of course. I would be more than happy to read it, and I know that he would, too. He really adored your round one/two entries.

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-22 06:07:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad to hear it! The story would really get a lot more interesting after the games are over and done with. I love taking fictional worlds and then distorting them beyond recognition.

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-22 12:38:03 +0000 UTC]

I plan on writing quite a few chapters that happen after the Games for my story. Because Rottie has a very lengthy recovery period between her temporary insanity and all the injuries she suffered in the arena.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-22 14:19:57 +0000 UTC]

You won't find Jack getting much 'recovery' time, although he will have to endure a lot of 'medical treatment' after they take him out of the jungle...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-22 14:29:37 +0000 UTC]

I have been toying with an idea for awhile, that involves half of Rottie's insanity being just that: her own mental illness. However, I had an idea back in round three that the Head Gamemaker would somehow embed a device in Rottie's head prior to the Games and use it to speak to her, generating a literal voice that caused her to act rashly. I don't know that I'll actually use it, however, as it's pretty well established that she actually is crazy.

Post-Games, she settles down in the "little white room" after her wounds are healed. The Rottweiler settles down, but never truly goes away. She's always there, waiting to rise up again.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-22 16:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Looks like our ideas overlap a bit - you might recall the epilogue piece I wrote for Jack, in which the powers that be essentially take his mind and body over with the same sort of controls exerted over the mutts. Of course, after the epic conclusion of the first Hunger Games, Jack is simply shuffled back to his home city... where bad things inevitably happen, and he finds himself imprisoned in a padded cell.

I seriously can't wait until I have time to write all this out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-22 16:20:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I remember that. One of my reasons for not using it was because I didn't want to borrow any ideas from another member of the group. And also because CHK said that it was a bad idea. Then again, according to that damn tournament, all of my ideas are bad. My confidence has been in shambles since I lost, and I feel like I'm no longer a capable writer. I even considered giving it up altogether, but V-One encouraged me to write Rottie's story as I have it now. He says that finishing it will make me feel better, but I'm so morbidly depressed that nothing really helps.

I'm enjoying it so far, even though it's received purely negative feedback aside from V-One's comments. :/

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-23 04:45:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, when I read it you can expect me to give positive yet objective feedback - I enjoy your writing style & choice of settings, descriptive themes, etc, so I'm sure it will be enjoyable. A heads up tho: I'm not so into the fawny infatuation stuff, as I prefer relationships between characters to either be tragically flawed or based on really messed up foundations, but that's just because I'm a horrible cynic when it comes to romantic tropes. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-23 15:37:01 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind criticism until it's something stupid. I created a new Fanfiction account recently for the sole purpose of uploading Rottie's story to the Hunger Games category, and the only reviews I've received so far are very cynical. Why? Because "Rottie" sounds too much like my pen name. Really. That's it. That's what has this person so upset, to the point that s/he's openly bashing my account. Also, the third judge in the tournament? Her reviews are a good example of bad critique that is bitter, cynical, and not helpful, but offensive.

Do not bash my OTP, Dan. XD Rottie slits people's stomachs open and hangs them up by their innards for that man! How romantic...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dandabug In reply to PastellePirate [2013-02-23 16:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, as I said the whole tournament went downhill after round 2. One of the few reasons I'm glad I dropped out when I did. As for your character sharing an element of your name, well, that means nothing really - even if your character was named Bottled-Rottweiler, it's not really relevant. How a person came up with their character (provided it's original) should have no bearing on the judgement of their entry.

As for your OTP, I don't think I'm bashing - but I have told you before that you can always trust me to be honest. I don't criticize based on preferential friendships or other such bias, nor do I insult an author or their entry, but I also don't dole out meaningless praise or fawn over how cute & lovable somebody's little kid is. I generally have a bleak and brutal view of reality, and enjoyed Suzanne Collins' books because she seems to share some of it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PastellePirate In reply to Dandabug [2013-02-23 16:38:44 +0000 UTC]

This person was going on about why it is apparently bad for a character and author to share a similar name for several paragraphs. I haven't gotten to why Rottie is called that yet, so that might clear things up a little for this poor fool.

The bashing comment was only a joke. Trust me, I knew you weren't. :3

As for bad tournaments, are you familiar with #VitalSparkOCT ? That tournament is just...SO BAD. I could go on about it for hours. The contestants can "buy" extensions with artwork and hold everyone else up for as long as they want. It's so STUPID that it makes you want to stab half the people over there in the chest with the fragments of their own broken bones.

Eh, trying to get past my laziness and actually update my DA page with the artwork I've been working on - lots of new stuff you might find interesting. I've been revisiting one of my many childhood fantasy-worlds, one where a nuclear Armageddon has destroyed all human and vertebrate life on earth, leaving societies of tiny, sentient insects to rule the wilderness. They have lots of vehicle races too.

One of your characters ... if I remember correctly, once upon a time, there was Olaf and so on -- interested in the meat department.

Thank you very much!

I should credit you right away, because I will end up having to put up with a bunch of weirdos towards the end of the current episode of Nurse Molly ......

I do not plan on showing that much blood and gore. But Molly needs to have a crew hidden somewhere deep within the bowels of her hospital in charge of handling 'spare parts'. (Well ... if you are dealing with organ transplants, you are essentially dealing with spare parts one way or the other.) We shall see ...

Oooh... even more interesting. Well, should you decide to include anything Olaf-esque as your processing staff, I will be extremely pleased! (in case you need to know, the human equivalent to Olaf would almost certainly be a rather burly, chunky man like this: [link] )
