So how have you been Bubbo?

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-12 08:02:09 +0000 UTC]

I have been good, my new computer arrived recently even though it was a birthday present from ages ago. It was worth the wait, as it performs much better allowing me to play games which were previously too graphic intensive for my pc to handle I can also have a lot more mods on games like skyrim. Today I am going to get the last of the things I need for university.

How have you been? and have you seen the new episode of mlp?

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-13 03:34:34 +0000 UTC]

Wow that sounds fantastic friend! I really hope you enjoy your new computer! And when do you start attending your university? I'm actually curious, have you already attended a previous college before signing up for this university? The way education works here, might be different over there maybe.

I've been good. Currently attending my third year of college, and working during the week when needed. I got a new computer awhile back myself, a desktop. I use it for personal use, which includes web surfacing, digital drawing, and typing as well. However I haven't started it yet. Also my birthday went well, and now I'm another year older. I actually have not watched the new MLP, I really must get around it. I've just been busy is all.

Thank you, I move into university on the 24th but lessons don't start till the 3rd of October.

In the UK you need to do well in A-levles to get into a university. These A-levles can be done at a college or at a post-16-centre. Post-16-centres are extensions of a secondary school (the last form of compulsory full-time education, finished at 16) to teach A-levles. There are two types of colleges: community colleges which are state funded and private colleges which are very expensive to get into. All can hold you back a year if you don't do well enough and can remove you from the course if you completely fail. Normally those who fail in a post-16-centre end up going to a community college which allows you to retake a year more than once if you can afford it or prove that its worth the colleges' funding; they also offer more BTEC courses which are worth the same as A-levles but aren't respected as by universities as much since they're 100% course work and 0% exams.

I went to a post-16-centre and was not held back, a couple of my friends were and are still there doing A-levles. One of my friends failed and went to a nearby community college. My post-16-centre was in a partnership with 2 other post-16-centres and a community college, since each individual place didn't have enough resources and teachers to teach all the courses that students were asking for. I went to the community college in the partnership to do physics for a term but I quickly dropped it. I was less and less interested in psychics and I hated the community college, it was old and run down, with a drug problem; one day the police arrived searching everyone and arrested 50 students for possession of cannabis. The people in my class were all 18 and 19 retaking for the 2 or 3rd time. The guy I sat next to looked younger than me but he was older than me, I soon found out it was because he regularly smoked cigarettes and cannabis. After my grandparents passed away and we set aside money for university my parents booked me into a revision course in a private college for a week in easter. It was amazing, it was like a small university, lots of modern equipment, well organised, good staff and students who wanted to learn. It was also old but in a good way, since it was founded in the 14th century and still has lots of stained glass depicting the founders.

I have a rough idea of how education is done in the USA but it appears to me to be a very long process but I am just used to the UK system. Is that the final year of college? and are you thinking of going to university?

I am glad that you enjoyed your birthday. I am excited but nervous about going to university.

Wow talk about an interesting story, and explanation as well of the UK Education. It's really different from the US indeed. And to be honest with you, no this isn't my final year of college yet unfortunately. I'd like to attend a university in the future though, but I haven't really decide on a career or major yet. I'm just working to finish my general education currently. However I'm curious to know if you've decided on a major or career you like to pursue. From how I read it, you appear to be quite smart so maybe you already have an idea of what you wanna be in the future.

Yeah I'll probably feel the same way too eventually. However it's great to know that you'll be attending a university soon.

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-15 08:42:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the compliment, although I attribute my success to preparing months before the exams and building up to them in revision until it was into the weeks leading up to exams. Then I started cutting back a lot on my social life and spare time, I did so more than any of my friends. Also, I was only prepared to work that hard since I didn't want a repeat of the grades from last year, which were decent but not enough to get me into a good university.

I am going to be studying Bio-sciences. I have no idea where in biology I want to go since so far I have mostly done human biology plus a little bit of botany and ecology; there is so much out there which I haven't done before. I see myself either in a lab or out collecting data on plants or animals. Fortunately, I have the time to decide where I want to specialise into and am on a flexible course which offers a variety of choice. The first year is all compulsory modules such as basic botany, basic zoology and ecology. The next year is 1/3 compulsory and the other 2/3 you have to chose between more specialised areas eg oceanography, venomology, entomology ect. Then the 3rd year is more optional modules and a large project of our choice in a specialised area.

Sounds like a great plan Bubbo! And I just love space and the universe! I find it really interesting, and so beautiful to look at from photographs. Space is just such a lovely aesthetic, and seeing galaxies printed on clothing is truly amazing. I should also add I have a poster of the Orion Nebula, with an imagination quote by Albert Einstein on it. It's really something, but anyways I think learning about our solar system, and the entire universe around sounds pretty neat. Also Pluto will always be a planet in my eyes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-18 21:39:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes I have! And I saw the one before it as well. I though they were both alright, and not too bad. It was nice seeing something different for a cutie mark problem with the CMC. And Gabby made for an interesting character. I was a little surprised the CMC didn't catch on to the whole "helping others" as a purpose. That Gabby sure does do that well. Overall it was pretty decent. Moving onto the Las Pegasus episode featuring AJ and Flutters. I thought it was great seeing the Flim Flam Brothers again, I had thought that perhaps they be the source of the problem. However I did feel Gladmane was a bit shifty from the start, he just had a certain presence that made me not like him. Seeing some references here and there was somewhat enjoyable, I thought it did represent Las Vegas mostly. It is quite the party mostly. And another thing and this is a little bit of a comic spoiler, but the whole issue with Flim and Flam not getting along reminded me of a Friends Forever comic that featured them no longer working together. However it was Granny Smith playing the middle pony, trying to get them to understand one another and to cease fighting. So I made that connection there, and also seeing those two again made me wanna see Iron Will as well too. He only made one appearance in the show, but then in the comics he makes more. I wonder if they can write something to have him make his return again. Gladmane sure was something, and I found that the whole source of him being the issue to be a nice take on the friendship problem. I thought that episode was okay, and I wonder if the location of Las Pegasus is actually built on clouds? The design was interesting, and with clouds around it made me curious to know.
What did you think of those to episodes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-19 15:00:02 +0000 UTC]

I though that the CMC episode was ok. I agree that Gabby was a good character and a griffon, of which we see so few. I would of liked to see more of her homeland but I guess they already gave her a decent backstory. The story line was basic and I can't remember much else about the episode. I enjoyed watching the CMC episode. However, I enjoyed the Las Pegasus episode much more, since it had more going on in it and of course Flim and Flam were there. I am glad that they didn't have a song this time. Plus, since they're two established villains they had more time to develop Las Pegasus and Gladmane which was good. This also meant that we could see the Flim Flam Bros in action but whilst working towards a positive outcome. I didn't get that sort of feeling about Gladmane until Applejack discovered how he had split up the stage performer and director. I also thought that the problem would just be Flim and Flam and I was pleased when it wasn't just them. I loved how Gladmane was able to see through part of their plan and throw a wrench in the works, even if Applejack and Fluttershy's plan hadn't failed it caught me off guard and made it more interesting. I liked seeing Applejack and Fluttershy together it was a good combination that we don't often see. In the comics was it the same sort of dispute or was it more complicated, if it was more complicated don't spoil it since, although it is low on my priorities I intend to get to around to reading the comics some day. What sort of references were there? I don't remember seeing any. I would definitely like to see the return of established villains such as iron will.  We only briefly saw the rest of Las Pegasus but maybe we will see Las Pegasus again in a future episode similar to how we saw Manehattan again.

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-19 21:57:28 +0000 UTC]

It was references that connected with the real Las Vegas. In more sense parodies. For instances there was a poster of a pony who resembled pop singer Britney Spears. And the animal handling duo of stallions, were meant to be a nod to Siegfried & Roy. A German magician duo well know for their acts involving white lions and white tigers. And those were just the two noticeable ones I saw. However there were quite a few arcade games that appeared, that are real games in the real world. And I think part of the architecture of Las Pegasus, had some nods to the real architecture of Las Vegas. Being honest though I think Manehattan has a better design in my opinion. Well I actually wonder if he'll still be painted as a villain from his debut. Especially with Fluttershy telling him "No means no." during her attempts to be more assertive. She found her own way, and managed to grow from it a bit. Maybe he'll be seen as just the usual self help guru, who is trying to make sense of no means no. But might not do so well at it. It would be nice to see more of it if possible, or if there's more to see to begin with. I really like Manehattan overall, and it's made a great location for Rarity episodes. Also don't worry, I don't plan to spoil anything about the comics for you Bubbo.

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-20 08:24:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok, I know very little about Las vagus so references like those going straight over my head isn't surprising. I hadn't really thought about Iron Will that much and yeah I can see what your saying. It would be nice to see him interact with Fluttershy to show how far she has come but apart from that there is little I can see the writers doing with him; unless he comes back to give starlight glimmer some confidence and self acceptance lessons, though she probably doesn't need them. The way that they developed Manehatten has been really good and it still feels like the writers still have a lot left to work with. Manehatten can also be used to explore issues associated with bigger cities. I still want to see them go to Saddle Arabia though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-20 16:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and that's kind of unfortunate for his character too. You get one episode in Season 2, and then after that you're gone. However, he does make some appearances in the IDW comics. But I don't wanna spoil those for you. However that idea with Starlight sounds interesting, but I can agree though she probably wouldn't really need them. The idea about Iron Will returning to Ponyville to check up on Fluttershy's progress would make for an interesting episode. After touring all throughout Equestria, the Minotaur would return back to the rural town of Ponyville. He'd probably be a bit enlighten by Fluttershy as well from the previous episode. And now that I think about, perhaps his absence came about because of his seminars taking him around all of Equestria. So he was very far away, and that would explain why we haven't seen him in a long time. A tour of self help seminars. I agree with you about Manehatten, there's a lot the writers can work with. And it definitely can make way for other cities in Equestria for sure. I'd really like to see more of Equestria myself too, and Saddle Arabia would be a great location to see in the future.

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-21 17:20:05 +0000 UTC]

You're right, although we don't know exactly how many settlements are in equestria he could easily just still be on tour. If they made an atlas of the MLP:FIM universe that include extra info on each area then I would seriously consider buying it; or even a puzzle game where you were able to explore areas from the episodes. Apart from the 2 ponies we saw from Saddle Arabia ages ago there hasn't been any mention of it like there has been with Las Pegasus, Manehatten or Fillydelphia, so I don't expect them to go there anytime soon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-21 20:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Well there is the map of Equestria, however I feel if they made an atlas of the MLP:FIM universe. It might occur when more locations are established in the show. There are many locations on the Equestria map, and probably the cutie map as well. It would be a nice book for the fans who'd like to know more of the land. Nice detailed descriptions and hand drawn illustrations too. There definitely needs to be more details on each part of Equestria, whether we've seen it in the show or not. It's unfortunate that Saddle Arabia only had that one episode a while back, I feel the Mane 6 need to explore more further and new locations. Creating more development and discovery for the fan on Equestria. That would be a nice thing if the crew of the show did that.

I look forward to more world building. What would be great but unlikely for Hasbro to build, would be a virtual reality game set in the mlp universe with some element of exploration. I am excited by VR but its expensive and most games made for it look very basic, which is understandable due to how new and limited the hardware is. Generally though, I would love for Hasbro to make more lore related products.

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-24 16:31:45 +0000 UTC]

It would be great if Hasbro decided to do that. Building more into the world of MLP would really be informative. And I think that idea of yours sounds great! When I visited my first MLP con this year, I had the chance to try out this fun VR game on display. It was really cool, and interesting as well. You reminded me of it, and it would be a nice idea for them to do.

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-27 13:48:54 +0000 UTC]

Moving into uni has been busy but good I joined a few student societies, got my student ID and am settling in. I haven't met my tutor yet but I should do soon. I have been introduced to some of the biology staff. The people I am sharing my accommodation with are nice, I can only remember a few by name. The room is great and although it wasn't my first choice it is a lot bigger than I expected and its in a quiet area so I have been able to sleep well. Cooking for myself is fun but I need to be careful how long I keep extra portions in the fridge, last night I was sick after eating spaghetti bolognese which had been reheated after being in the fridge for a couple of days.

The episode was ok and I don't have much to say other than: the message was good and that I liked seeing Starlight interact with the mane 6 at the end. What did you think of it?

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-27 14:10:55 +0000 UTC]

Wow, well it sounds like a great experience so far. I hope everything else goes well for you from here on out Bubbo. It must be a really interesting change from regular schooling, I've always wondered what it's like to attend school and live on campus as well. Especially when you might have roommates.

It was okay to me, but not much to be said really. I thought it was nice to see Starlight again, and I wonder where will her friendship and magic lesson eventually lead her? Will she be Twilight's student and friend for awhile, or eventually move out and be on her own? Like live with Starburst or something. Perhaps become a princess? Hmm that might be a bit much, but maybe when you think of the show.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-28 17:36:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, well I haven't started lessons yet but it is a big change that I am handling well so far.

I haven't thought about the future of Starlight Glimmer's training. I would like to see her move out to a new location and establish a new group of friends or become friends with some more established characters such as Trixie. This would allow for more world building and would be a good way to put her friendship skills to the test. I would prefer if she didn't become a princess, since she isn't royalty or an element of harmony; it would also make the rank of princess less special and in my eye reduce the size of the achievement made by Twilight to become a princess. I am looking forward to how Starlight is going to contribute to the season finale.

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-28 19:16:24 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I hope that everything will be alright with you then. And I wish you good luck as well.

That sounds like a neat idea, and to add perhaps Starlight tagging along with Trixie could make for some interesting character development between the two. Especially with their first meeting, I think they can write more about them. And world building would be great as well. Starlight has really come a long way from last season. From an antagonist to a protagonist. After just one season. It will definitely be interesting to see how she plays a role in the season finale.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-29 08:12:36 +0000 UTC]

I agree having Starlight and Trixie travel together would have a lot of potential for development but also with some new lessons. I expected her to be like Discord, taking multiple episodes and seasons to reform properly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-29 13:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I thought the same thing too! However maybe that's what's going to happen? Although she does appear to be improving in such a short period of time. Perhaps the writers preferred that pacing so it wouldn't take so long in the show itself. I think for the most part she's mostly reformed, it's not like she'll turn away and go back to being a villain. Or in the least a loner from the other ponies. However we'll just have to see. After all that it would be surprising to see her change so quickly. Maybe the time format in Equestria is quite broad, and the episodes featuring her took place during various months or times. It could be that she's been reforming the whole time, especially when not featured in an episode.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-09-30 08:46:25 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the writers are planning to have her reformed to some degree for the season finale or episodes 1 and 2 of season 7; this would allow her to take a more centre role, we may even see more of her in the season finale than the mane 6. I hadn't thought about the broader time scale of the episodes before, yeah if the episodes were set months apart then it could still be a long reformation, with us seeing the highlights.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-09-30 11:59:29 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you're right about that theory. After all she's been through a lot. A Starlight focused finale would be an interesting two parter to watch. It would also be a great chance for some in depth character development for her. More into her struggles with learning friendship as a whole. Perhaps Sunburst can be seen, or maybe play a part in the finale as well. Seeing them interact is a nice sight, especially after everything in their past. Yeah highlights, that would be the general idea of the starlight centered episodes that show her learning more about friendship.

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-10-03 15:51:26 +0000 UTC]

Okay I've seen it, and I thought it was pretty decent. Applejack is pirate haha, and Rarity is probably a bit overdressed for a ship ride on a wooden ship with sails. That one dress she wore with the fancy hat was a reference to the Titanic film. And Pinkie is Pinkie. Certainly being wacky as ever. From the way the stories were going, I thought maybe AJ would have the honest true account of what happened on the boat. However she didn't. And then the location where the ship was, I wonder where in Equestria is that? I think it was mentioned possibly. And I found it interesting that we got introduced to another species of creature at the bottom of the lake. I think it was a lake, from what I remember.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-10-04 08:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Applejack did have an honest account, it was just limited by her perspective on the situation. I didn't really like the lake monster that they added, the design felt like they were going for something more serious looking but then late in development they wanted to make it less scary, so they gave it big eyes and eyelashes. I don't remember where in equestria they said they were and I didn't see any clues to where they might be either. The message was good about getting the full story on problems; it just feels like they were a bit immature with all of them waiting for apologies. I should have noticed the Titanic reference. All together, I thought it was alright but nothing special.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JSPatronus In reply to bubbobings [2016-10-04 13:47:32 +0000 UTC]

Same here, and I agree as well I felt the lake monster's design could've been much more serious than it appeared. Hmm perhaps this location with docks and a lake might be somewhere new? Wait, Twilight did mention at the beginning of the episode about the boat trip being at a place called Seaward Shoals. And that's definitely somewhere we haven't seen yet, so it was a bit of world building. Which is cool to see, the place was decent in design for the most part. I certainly hope that this episode builds up well to the season finale, this was episode 22 and we're getting close to the end of the season. Hopefully the writers will make the ending two parter very special and well written too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbobings In reply to JSPatronus [2016-10-05 08:14:45 +0000 UTC]

It probably is somewhere new but they didn't do much in the way of world building but that's ok, since it allowed more time for story development. Well so far the only overarching theme has been the development of Starlight but it would be nice to catch a glimpse of something in the background of one of the next two episodes. The next episode involves Applejack's past, I hope we get to hear about her parents. I am going to try and watch that mlp movie some time later today if the youtube video hasn't been taken down yet.

Well that's alright Bubbo. School comes first then ponies, don't worry I haven't watched it either. However, I plan to watch it maybe today since it's on Netflix. I thought I'd give it a chance since it could be interesting maybe. We'll have to see.
