zen666 In reply to ??? [2011-10-14 01:43:03 +0000 UTC]
EXACTLY.
I don't think he really intends to be an ass... It just kinda, happens.
Like, he delibrately refers to John as his friend in episode two, and is later quite... sad looking when Sebastian says everyone hated him. So that, plus John's little "Colleague" remark, is sort of getting to him, because as far as he knows, everyone STILL pretty much hates him.

Yeah, although in episode three I'm pretty sure John still likes him, even when John gets angry due to the whole "not caring about people" thing. I think Sherlock is just putting up a facade when John is angry with him.

Of course he still likes him, but he's struggling with the fact that Sherlock is viewing all of this as good fun, which, you have to admit, he does view it as that.
Although, he did appear shaken up by the old lady's death, and the child being strapped to the bomb afterwards. That being said, everything stopped being a game when things got personal and John was targeted, not just because he cares about John, but that Moriarty/Jim knew their strong bond would get such a strong reaction out of Sherlock, despite only meeting them once.
I think actually that John gets angry about the things Sherlock says and does because he cares about him, whether romantically or platonically, or even as he maintains as "colleagues".

I don't think John, by episode three, says they are still colleagues. That is not possible. He has to consider Sherlock a friend. Sherlock maybe still sees things as a game after the old lady and the child situations, but those situations do make him understand the gravity of the situation as more than a fun little game. He still doesn't care as much as John would want until John becomes the target though. And I meant Sherlock was putting up a facade when John got angry with him. He still didn't really care, but he was a little sad when John was disappointed. They still carried on, but I think some of the "acting as usual" can be classified as Sherlock ignoring his feelings.

First comment sent without my permission. XP
As I was saying, if he really cared about John's faith in his humanity, he wouldn't be so delibrately and directly harsh to him, especially considering how normally, John is the one person he is never that intentionally cold towards.
Of course, on the other hand, he does sound quite bitter when he tells Moriarty that he has been "reliably informed that [he doesn't] have [a heart]." It's a clear call back to that argument, and he says it right in front of John.
It's like a "take that" to him, so maybe he is hurt that John would assume that. Or he's boasting, which I find unlikely.
Plus, my arguments could be debunked by the fact that Sherlock had not had much of a fun time that episode: Look around, even the Scotland Yarders were riffing on him for his lack of conventional knowledge, same as John, and to add insult to injury, the only reason they knew was because of Sherlock's friend's blog. So the quotes I have could be seen as him trying to get back at him for all the sniping he's enduring.
I think it could go either way, which I think is good; a morally ambiguous hero (even if he claims they don't exist or that he is not one) are much more interesting.

True, true. I agree. I think we are both saying the same thing in over 9000 different ways. So we may as well just say fuck it and break out the bourbon and watch the first episode over and over and over again.

Seriously though. We can only be the #2 fangirls... Because Mark Gatiss is the self-proclaimed #1 fanboy. (He's the co-creator).
And then there's the Moff, gleefully trolling Tumblr and the like.
This is NOT a crack ship. This isn't even a ship: it's fucking canon.

Hahahaha, that's great. OH YES! IT IS A CANNON.
On an extremely unrelated note (although not THAT unrelated, since we are on the subject of fangirling over a canon couple...), please read this:

*fangirls* Becky: "you are so weird. Like, super weird"
"Sorry I was fangirling over Sherlock....and Watson" *continues to fangirl squeel*
Also, tomorrow is F day, so period 1 is the lunch period. I have lunch with you, says Becky, so I'll find you there I guess then? Or maybe I'll drop by your homeroom. Either way works.

There are more fanfics I like, but while John and Sherlock are IC, the authors have developed them further, and in a way that one may or may not consider OOC, especially considering it is quite difficult to get those men together whilst making it believable.

Mathmonkey In reply to zen666 [2011-10-23 21:57:59 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, true. True. I do like when authors develop further. People change. It's not like they wouldn't after five years and all that. I like it better when the development is shown, but at least the fanfics you showed me took place long after the series so far. OOC-ness in realtime is annoying.

True that. Unless you're reading what is intended to be a crack!fic. Then it's hilarious.

zen666 In reply to Mathmonkey [2011-10-24 02:13:37 +0000 UTC]
Well, yes, but they are, ah, how did you put it? Oh, yeah, they have sex in them, which seems to contradict his apparent asexuality so they may seem a bit like the ones you described as "Let's put these two together and watch them have sex! Yayyyy!" even though the fics are more about the emotion behind it, with the sex thrown in to appease them damn slash fangirls.

Hahaha, I see. And you know, he's a sociopath, self-proclaimed only so far as we know, so maybe he does have some feelings....
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
zen666 In reply to Mathmonkey [2011-10-25 01:27:18 +0000 UTC]
His actor says he only claimed to be a sociopath to piss off Anderson. Apparently, he's more "Aspergerish". And judging from his very frazzled "Are you alright?! ARE YOU ALRIGHT?!" whilst tearing off John's clothes the bomb, he does in fact have a heart.

Mathmonkey In reply to zen666 [2011-10-25 23:45:37 +0000 UTC]
Haha, yes, I think so too. He definitely feels for people, but he can choose less compassion in some situations....unless someone's name rhymes with gone. Then he can't not care.

zen666 In reply to Mathmonkey [2011-10-27 19:30:41 +0000 UTC]
Nice forced rhyme.
I think you're right, he does feel he just... has a facade?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Mathmonkey In reply to zen666 [2011-10-29 21:35:05 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, haha. Hmm, facade isn't exactly right. It sort of implies that he is almost the opposite of what his facade is, which is not true. But I can't think of any other word, so facade works. It is a little bit of a front, I suppose, yes?

zen666 In reply to Mathmonkey [2011-10-17 00:03:22 +0000 UTC]
Of course he considers him more of a friend by episode three. He wouldn't have come RUNNING back to the flat after he found out about the explosion.
But as far as caring about how disappointed John was, I don't think he was that much: He found it a nuisance. He actually openly mocks him about it:
"Oh, you're angry with me so you won't help. Not much cop, this 'caring lark.'"
And even earlier:
"[after John has just mentioned the dire situation the hostage is in] There are people in this very hospital that are dying, Doctor, why don't you go cry by their bedside and see what good it does them?"
Whenever the subject of John's own empathy with the hostages comes up, not only does he openly mock him, he cruelly mocks him.
Ironic, considering the one who has most empathy with the hostages ends up becoming one.
