There once was a cat named Smoky. He was a solid gray tom with blue eyes. His right eye gone, from a fight with the terrier across the street. This caused Smoky to have sight problems. Smoky was halfway deaf, so he had a hard time hearing many things. One day Smoky came out from the his home in the dump and purred against a little child. The child petted him and hissed his head, but his mother kicked Smoky away from her child. "No, honey!" the mother yelled. "that is not something to be nice too." the child walked away, leaving Smoky hurting on the floor. The next day Smoky saw a man with a suit on, carrying a briefcase. Smoky ran over and purred against the man, but the man did not like it. He picked Smoky up by the scruff and tossed him into the grass. "Stupid cat," he muttered before walking off. Smoky wished somebody would love him, but alas everyone hated him because of his look. It wasn't his fault, he had lost his eye in bravery from saving himself. Smoky walked into the road and looked at the other side. Since Smoky was halfway deaf, he couldn't hear the truck coming. The roar was loud enough once it got closer, and Smoky tried to dodge it, but his waist down was crushed by the tires. He laid there in pain, the truck not stopping. Finally, an old farmer came along and held Smoky. Smoky looked into the farmer's gray eyes as if saying "please love me". The farmer brought Smoky to his house and laid him on a towel. The farmer pet Smoky and gave him some water. Smoky once felt loved. The farmer picked Smoky up again and held him close and whispered, "you poor thing," Smoky couldn't believe himself, but he was purring. He was loved. Someone actually liked him. Smoky heaved his sides, slowly exhaling as his life faded away. The farmer stroked Smoky softy and wrapped him up. Smoky purred again and feebly licked the farmer wrinkly hand.
Once Smoky had gone, the farmer wrapped him up in the towel and dug a whole. He put smoky in there and put a board sticking out of the dirt where Smoky had been covered that said: "Soot, the cat who died next to me"
