Well it wasn't expected, unfortunately she was perfectly fine until about ten minutes before she died. Judging by what happened to her we think her lungs may have flooded.

Oh, no, that is horrible! I am so, so, sorry. How old was she? What could have caused something like that? She was not ill with a long term thing? My dog has had kidney infections since he was a puppy... I did not know if she had anything like that. I am sorry if I am being cruel; you absolutely do not have to answer if it upsets you. I am serious though: I am here for you and care very much for you and your family. If only I could help.Β

Of course you're not being cruel! You could never be anything but kind.
Unfortunately the illness she picked up was a silent killer; it's a form of streptococcus that displays little or no symptoms,in fact the most common symptom is just sudden death. It was all over in a few minute; I'm just glad her suffering was very brief. She was six years old.
I'm sorry to hear about your dog, too. Is he okay now or is it an ongoing problem?

I am so, so sorry to hear that. How on earth did she get it? Is it catchable or a genetic thing? I have never actually heard of that before and it just breaks my heart. I really, really hope you and your family are all right. In trying to look at the positives, I am glad she did not suffer too badly. It's always the worse when they suffer. But she was far too young. I am so sad for you, Suzi, really I am. If only I could give you a hug.Β Β
Oh, he is all right. It is a lifelong problem, but just as long as he does not eat certain foods it is all right. We did not know that when he was a puppy, though, so he would get extremely ill. If only you had known before, or there had been a hint. Just know you're in my prayers. Will you get another pet or are you taking a break?Β

Well the only place we think she might have caught it was from the vet's examination table; she had pneumonia only a few months ago, which it was a miracle she survived in the first place, but other than that one trip to the vet she hadn't been in contact with any other birds for years.

I'm glad you have found some ways round your dog's problem, too. 
I am getting another pigeon, actually! It's a bit close to the death of Tiggy, but we were thinking about getting another pet (because of course, being mainly housebound, my mum is finding it very lonely not to have a pet. She probably gets sick of me lol) and we contacted a wildlife sanctuary and they actually have some young pigeons who can't return to the wild; so next weekend we're going to head out there and see if we want to adopt one of them.

That's really really odd. I'm so glad she recovered, but still, that's horrible. To think she could've caught it from the place where these things are supposed to be helped.Β

Oh wow, really?!?! Congratulations!! It's not too soon; one of the best ways to cope is to get another. When our dogs die we go find another usually that day. It's a little fast, but it's the best way to help yourself. I'm so glad to hear you found some!!Β

We're still looking into it; the one we were looking at didn't work out, so we're looking around again. Also we asked our local vet to keep us in mind should they get any birds that can't find a home, so I'm sure we'll have another soon enough.
