Dragonflies through Binoculars by Sidney Dunkle, published by Oxford, is, afaik, the only exhaustive popular reference on North American dragonflies. It includes color photos and detailed descriptions for all the species, as well as range maps and tips on telling each species apart from the others that appear similar. I rely mostly on that, as well as sites like

The Dasher is also much smaller, about 1.25 inches versus 3 for the Darner.

They are wild looking! I saw one in a zoo and was intrigued--there's a photo in my gallery.

The great majority of my wildlife photos are taken in the wild, with a handful in zoos or wildlife rehab centers--my journal gives details.
