you are most welcome. its good to see ODSTs getting some love too. they tend to get overlooked a little next to spartans. also cool to see female sanghelli wasn't quite sure how they would look.Β

Yeah, it kinda buggs me as well that the ODSTs get overshadowed that much by the Spartans, even though they got a great lore and set of characters. That's why I'm a fan of them ^^
The way I drew them is pretty much how they are described to look like in the books. Still, it's not so popular, since a lot of people tend to draw them with hair and breasts for some reason.

Odst is probably my favorate out of all the halos. (Though that might have something to do with the firefly conection) if anything odsts are tougher because they do it with out all the mods and tech.
Is it in the karren traviss books we get the discription I remember them being in it but can't quite rember them being described .
Neither of which make sence I especially if you have seen sanghelli mouths.

Same here. Halo2 and ODST are my favorites. That's basically why I like them so much. They are pretty much the toughest normal humans you can find and they do what they do without super armor and out of free will, unlike the Spartans who are genetically and biologically augmented through surgeries, equipped with incredible armor and brainwashed into doing what they do since they're kids. So also from the moral standpoint I prefer the ODSTs by far over glorified child soldiers.
It's mentioned in all Karen Traviss books how they kinda look like but the best description of the females is in Thursday War where Phillips says that the females look almost identical to the males and that the ODSTs probably won't notice the difference at fist glance, even though they're usually slightly smaller and less bulky according to the description of Raia 'Mdama.

i never quite understood why odst completely change how they look without explanation between halo 2 and 3 though i like both versions. Β are there even going to be ODSTs anymore after the spartan iv program? in some ways it kind of overrides them a little now that they have gotten rid of the dodgy child soldier bit. Β i did enjoy the Kilo five books something which i am apparently in the minority for something i dont understand but hey whatever.

Dragunalb In reply to Swatson3rd [2016-05-15 01:32:35 +0000 UTC]
I think the change is explained due to the current ODST armor being redesigned from serving the SpartanII to serving the ODSTs, since they're the next best thing. The Halo2 variant is just the older variant that some soldiers still use. I think that's mentioned in one of the details for ODST.
I think that even now there will always be ODSTs, since they're cheaper. Also turning every of the hundreds of ODSTs into a Spartan would be way too expensive. I also believe that there's still some genetic/biological traits needed, in order for the augmentations to work, since that's still a complicated process not everyone is suited for, even though they're excellent ODSTs.
Apparently fans mostly dislike Karen's books because she's "bashing" Halsey and I know too well how some fans get when you mention Halsey maybe not being a godlike mommy that only did the best for her Spartans in order to save humanity. Sure, it's a way different sight of view those books show but Nylund's books are extreme too in the exact opposite way how he glorifies everything Halsey did with the Spartans, totally glossing over the fact that those are traumatized child soldiers that have been experimented on in order to use them against insurrectionists/political opposition, whilst Halsey pretty much did a lot of inhumane things to them without ONI forcing her to do so but because she was curious and wanted to know how far she can go. I never understood how fans could accept those crimes and the UNSCs borderline dictatorship as something good without even thinking what actually happens in those books. I really liked Karen's books, so I really don't care if other fans feel the need to protect their little fantasies of how cool it is to be a Spartan...

i am surprised that there aren't more spartan armors hand me downs seen used by other branches, though i saw a cool picture where someone had used some EOD armor for a regular marine.
i like both versions but i just irks me when they change things without explanation eg master chefs armor Β i know there was something about nano bots but really.
true i am sure that the UNSC likes to save money not every one can have their own armor that costs a battleship.
its good to have the different angles on events it makes them more interesting. i mean without the spartans its likely the war would be losts but theres the moral angle on why and how they were made that its good that they explore it give the fanchise a bit of depth that you would never get from just the games. Β i like that there is both sides.
i mean theres that bit in the last book i think where Naomi says that if she hadnt become a spartan she would likely have died long ago with her family Β and in some ways saved her but at the same time her becoming a spartan tore her family apart and sent her dad on a revenge quest as well as stealing her chance of being normal.Β
i guess despite knowing how horrible parts of it would be i still think it would be pretty cool to be a spartan maybe a spartan iv less emotional trauma all round that way.Β
still on the subject of cool how cool / terrifying would it be to be a helljumper flinging yourself at a planet in one of those reentry pods

I guess that's because even the earliest Spartan armor is most likely still expensive as fuck compared to regular Marine armor. Also you still have to make those armors compatible to normal humans, so I guess the ODST armor is the only adaptation of it.
I say it's just artistic freedom and then I'm fine, as long as the designs don't differ too drastically. I don't really like the newer ODST and marine armors since Halo4 to be honest. They look too mainstream now, instead of the iconing Halo3/ODST design.
Well that and the fact that every normal human being should be able to have a moral compass that's telling them that the whole Spartan program was bad. Sure, it may saved humanity but they still were child soldiers that were experimented on, in order to brutally beat down political opposition. The Nazis also made some medical progress by experimenting on prisoners and in most cases killing them but even though that gained knowledge helped saving lives, it's still wrong that they experimented on humans in order to get it. It really scares me that so many fans aren't able to see the wrong in it and act as if Halsey is a saint that did nothing wrong. She's a great character due to her complicated motives but she still is a criminal of war. The fact that ONI uses her as a scapegoat isn't going to change the fact that she voluntarily did what she did.
SpartanIV is ok, since they chose it themselves and are still treated as humans but SpartanII and to some degree the SpartanIII as well had no choice and are for the most part just treated like war material.

that is something i have noticed with halo 4/5 the designs in general seem to have lost some of the halo ness to them the marine stuff looks too generic.Β
Β did not like the updated ODST armor in the halo dlc it didnt look right at all, the shape was there but it was too i don't know rounded/ smooth maybe.
that said the halo 2 anniversary stuff looks amazing.
so we both agree that the point of origin of the Spartans is totally wrong morally but does that take away from the positive impact of them? i wouldn't necessarily say the Spartans themselves are bad as they are victims of their creators.
ive always wondered if they even get a pay check or holiday of any kind what would a spartan even do on holiday?
i wonder how different fan reaction would be if they had had the Karen Travis portray first.
are you a star wars fan ? how do you feel about stuff like the clone troopers? its a similar premise.Β
this is interesting hearing your take on things.

Nah, they raped the iconic ODST armor a lot in Halo4 and 5. It's supposed to look sleek and somewhat elegant but now it just looks clunky as if the person wearing it would have shit it's pants whilst wearing a bobble head. It's almost like a parody compared to the Halo3/ODST design. The Reach design had a great upper body design but the lower you got the more generic and boring it got. Same goes for the Spartans. It got better and better until Reach and then it got way too generic to the point it almost looks like Anime. Do not change a running system!
No, the Spartans are the victims in this. They themselves aren't really bad but they probably got some quite weird view of the world by now due to the intense drill and brainwashing, considering that most really hate insurrectionists, even though most are from the outer colonies and are basically speaking about their own families. Some may realized by now what ONI did to them but others are still dead loyal to ONI and Halsey as if they don't even want to see what happened to them.
I don't know if they even get holidays or payment. Maybe they're treated more like expensive racing horses that may get a few days/weeks off and expensive medication in order to prevent permanent injuries but as soon as they're ready again, you squeeze everything out of them till the day they die and even then you try to get every last penny out of them. For Spartans that probably means going down fighting to the last breath in order to take as many enemies with them.
I'm not sure. I was about 16 or so when I read the books, so probably a bit older and more analyzing of things than other fans were. Guess that's why I didn't just swallowed everything the Nylund novels told me but instead was pretty much the only person in the forums saying "you do realize that you're talking about kidnapped kids that have been turned into child soldiers for a borderline dictatorship"?
I've read Karen Traviss' Republic Commando novels. It brings up a lot of moral thoughts as well that are similar to the whole Spartan thing, except that the clones are optimized cannon fodder that doesn't even gets treated like human beings due to the way they came to life. I heard Star Wars fans didn't liked her books as well either for criticizing the Jedi for being somewhat hypocritical when it comes to protecting all sentient beings but at the same time having little or no issues at all to use a slave army of clones.

yes i don't understand why the anime vibe it was much better when they were channeling the Aliens marines as the inspiration it worked everything looked functional.
i am not sure about the race horse approach it sounds incredibly harsh but then again from the angle we're looking at. imagine most s ii wouldn't know what to do with down time anyway. Β though i do recall an example of a still functional spartan retiring so the grip cant be too tight.Β
its a very hard view to look at especially when the unsc / Spartans are meant to be the good guys so its not surprising that people would rather not see it, no one like having there heroes knocked down.
though isn't it odd that for the Sanghelli the whole no parent child warrior thing is considered normal?Β
we haven't really gotten much on the insurrectionists which from what ive hear go all the way from peaceful to full on piratical terrorists. Β or anything about regular life in the halo worlds which is a shame.Β
karen seems to get flack for what ever franchise she writes for which is a shame as ive enjoyed most of what ive read of hers (mainly gears of war)Β
i can see you joining up with the railroad in fallout.Β

They need to go back to the roots with the UNSC designs and get rid of all those fancy ass overload details that make them look too much like mainstream space anime stuff.
Well what are they gonna do if a Spartans says he doesn't wants to do shit anymore? He can basically just lay down on the floor like a child and do nothing and nobody will be able to make him move and if they try to, they get a punch in the face. They can either shoot him or let him be. Like a racing horse. The best racing horse is worthless when it doesn't wants to get out of the box and instead sits on it's jockey doing nothing, no matter how hard you whip it.
I guess the difference here is that the Sangheili are risen communally and still treat everybody the same, no matter how much power you've gained, you're still asked to fight in the first like with everyone else and are part of the society, as long as he does his job. It is very harsh growing up but they are not tools. With Spartans there's an upper class (ONI/UNSC/UEG) that pushes buttons and holds all power in their ivory tower, whilst the Spartans are pretty much just watchdogs trained to kill everything that threatens their masters. All they learn is how to effectively kill the enemy and give their life for the greater good, whilst the bosses do nothing. Every Sangheili is taught culture similar to the real world Spartans but I highly doubt the SpartanII were taught about things like culture, religion, democracy, art, how to sing or interpret poetry.
Which is why I liked Karen's books a lot since they showed the families left with dying clones and how things looked like in the colonies. Her very descriptive writing style isn't for everyone but I guess she mostly just gets hate for showing the negative sides of the fan's darlings and fans get very protective of what they like, no matter what they did.
I haven't played Fallout. What's the railroad?

Swatson3rd In reply to Dragunalb [2016-05-18 21:46:31 +0000 UTC]
if they wanted to leave they could leave even if the powers that be didnt want them to i imaging the cost of making them stay would be higher than letting them go if things turned ugly.Β
i know what you mean about the protective thing iam there like no don't be mean to my precious 7 foot tall armor plated killing machines. i just want there to be more to them than just that. there still people underneath it all. Β just because the powers that be have treated them as equipment doesn't mean thats all they are.
id recommend fallout.
but anyway in fallout there is a group called the institute that make robots called syths that are basically meat robots to begin with used as a labour force some develop personalities and more defined human characteristics and try to escape and the instituteΒ hunts them down brings them in and mind wipes them and sets them back to work.
the railroad helps escaped syths. helps them get away so they can live out normal lives.Β
