Perhaps someday I will; I do love etching cities and structures.. Far more than I enjoy doing people (although I spent the past 6 months teaching myself to do just that.) Thanks so much, appreciate it

There are others out there who can do work like this.. but they're few and far between (which is partially why I love the etch so much). Thanks!

What do you do with the Etch A Sketch's once you've photographed the drawings? Simply shake and start again?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to steeber [2011-08-20 01:48:06 +0000 UTC]

It depends on how much I like the piece and how much time was invested. I never shake a finished, full-sized etch a sketch. Instead I drill holes into the back before doing the picture and then if I'm satisfied with it upon completion, I remove the tape I put over the holes and sift out all the dust, that way it cannot be shaken/erased. Thanks!

steeber In reply to bryanetch [2011-08-20 12:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Fascinating.
Ohio Art must send you a lot of these.
I had two as a kid: one which leaked, one which didn't (and still doesn't).
Seems that through some chemical application, the images could be further stabilized, and the item itself could be hung on a gallery wall.

tamedwhiskers In reply to ??? [2011-08-19 11:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Your work is amazing! I am in awe of how you can do that on an etch-a-sketch. I felt proud when I drew a square xD

I have a question, do you buy up lots and lots of etch-a-sketches or do you use one main one and erase it to use again after photographing it? I ask because I don't think I could bear to erase something like you do!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to tamedwhiskers [2011-08-20 01:51:47 +0000 UTC]

I do own a lot of etch-a-sketches.. Probably somewhere in the 30+ range. I drill holes into the back, cover the holes with tape and then etch the pictures. If I like the finished sketch, I remove the tape and sift out all the sand, so that way it can never be erased! (ignore that sad face, I didn't mean to click it!) Thanks so much!

Oh wow thats awesome... I've never seen an etch-e-sketch... Well except in the movie toy story.

bryanetch In reply to Atobe333 [2011-08-20 01:53:38 +0000 UTC]

They're pretty common where I'm from (New York).. I can find them in any toy store or Walmart/Kmart/Target, ect. I do get a lot of them off eBay, also.. That's where I find all the fun, different colored ones Thanks so much!

Yea I think it never made its way to south africa XD But such a toy does intruige me, the small ones look really cute. And you dont erase your art on them obviously right? Heheh I like seeing art on all sorts of interesting mediums. ^~^ keep up the good work

bryanetch In reply to Atobe333 [2011-08-20 14:16:42 +0000 UTC]

I empty the sand out of the etch-a-sketches after I finish the art, so that way they can't be shaken and erased Thanks so much!

Thank you so much! They cityscapes can take anywhere from 12-25hrs, depending on the detail involved. About an hour a day for a few weeks.. Appreciate the kinds words

NotAlabaster In reply to bryanetch [2011-07-06 23:50:43 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome Wow... that's incredible dedication! Have you ever dropped one just as you finish it? It must be so difficult to do because you just constantly fear shaking it (or maybe that's just me and my clumsiness!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bryanetch In reply to NotAlabaster [2011-07-20 20:19:37 +0000 UTC]

I've dropped two. My Sydney Opera House micro-etch was dropped before I could photograph it. I then had to retrace the faded lines and of course it wasn't as clean as the original.. Then I also dropped my green full sized Boston etch a sketch, face down on concrete, after having removed the sand. There was a residue transference and I had to retrace the whole thing. It's much faster to retrace than it is to etch something the first time. Sorry for the delayed reponse! Take care!
