Sounds like you've had a mix of good and bad too, yeah original characters are so fun to work with. Speaking of which, I looked up an interview with this guy who's famous for creating cartoon characters, one tip he offered about making characters that I thought I should try was to simply go on a walk and pretend that your character is next to you, and then have a conversation with them, and see if they say things that you think of, it sounds kinda weird, but tons of  fun at the same time.
