One tip that I use myself is that if I get stuck with an images I change to another set of brushes. I also vary the size a lot. Some are made with only two but all sizes from 1 px to 2000. Just experiment, you are very good with colour yourself, try the transparent ones. They will suit you I think.

Instead of a brush you select the eraser-icon then you select the brush to erase with. Remember to save fixations regularly...
