Excerpt from the HoustonPress review of the 2006 10by10:
"...With its fluid structure and theatrical chops, Cutters, by Meghan Hakes, is the most dramatically accomplished of the ten plays. Powerfully acted by Julie Weiman, Sara Jo Dunstan, Raygan Kelly, Allison Marek and Barbara Lasater (as Doc), the story centers around four young people facing their self-mutilation obsessions in a group therapy session. Although the play is too skimpy for us to fully sympathize with their bizarre masochism, it packs a wallop nonetheless. ..."
Need I say more! Well yes actually--I pray the judges agree!

i already know i didn't win. one of the judges had a personal conflict with the subject and scored me very low(i think hoping that it wouldn't get produced), which threw off my average. ironically, the judge was the woman who is playing 'doc', she reread the script a few times and when the original actress playing doc dropped out, she offered to play the part. now she loves the play, too bad its so late. oh well, maybe next year!
thanks for posting the review, i was quite happy with it. (i was also happy that 'cookies' got panned, is that immature of me? , i just don't think it deserved to be in the top 10, but maybe that's just me!)

Well I hope she feels bad about her decision and burns with regret. Not very objective for a judge but I guess that's human nature. One thing about the portayal of the Doc in Cutters that has bothered me and I would like to hear your take on it. The aggression see employs to force Cealy to talk. I understand the time constraints of the play, but is was invasive and threatening.
Sounds like there is a lot of politics running amock in that group. Yes, there is a sort of satisfaction with an outsider vindicating your stanse about 'cookies'.
I don't think there was any other play that even came close to 'Cutters'. If it doesn't win, I won't have a whole lot of respect for that organization. (At least the judges) Fosters Hat was a sweet piece, but it just didn't have any punch. Second Chance was good but again just didn't have anything to it. 8:22 might have been interesting were it not for the acting but even then it was lite.
Ok I need to take a break--I'm starting to fume. Are you absolutely sure of the verdict?

fragilewing7 In reply to WiredRogue [2006-08-24 23:49:27 +0000 UTC]
yeah, i'm positive. i knew before we even had the auditions. i received two very high scores and one really low one, so my average isn't so hot. thank you for your wonderful comments and support about 'cutters', i appreciate it since i have gotten alot of flack for it from this group. apparently a lot of people are put off by the issue and because of that they can't really look at the writing, or even the fact that these characters are based on real people with a very real problem. this play is the culmination of about 2 years of interviews and research.
the judging seemed very erratic this year and it makes me wonder if there were any gems in the discard pile, you know? i wish they still did it like they used to, they would send the scripts to judges in new york, pittsburgh, chicago, and even la. that way, there was no personal bias and plays were chosen that could be produced across the country. i've judged a few contests here and its always hard because i know most of the writers, so even though they give us the plays without the playwright's names, i still know their style and form. when they sent them out of town we didn't have to worry about that at all. but they've recently changed how they do the judging (due to money constraints, i think, which is understandable) and i don't think they gave the judges a good description of what their job should be, it's not just necessarily whether you like it or not, you have to take other thinggs into account: is it producable? what are the set/prop/and costume constraints? too many actors? not enough? is it pure entertainment or does it have a broader theme? it seems as if the judges this year didn't take many of those things into account, but it could just be sour grapes talking, it's hard to say. at least i know that two of the judges scored me very high (almost 100), and it apparently hit that one judge in a bad way. but what can i do about that? not much. you can't please everyone.
that's the way it goes sometimes, houston talks about being very open minded and edgy, but when it really comes down to it, it seems as if theatre goers here really just want fluff (blanket statement, i know) but now that i've been in the theatre scene here for close to five years, i really think its true. edgy shows might get more critical acclaim, but its the comedies, and light romantic fair that are selling out.
which is not the case in other major cities. i have two companies looking at 'cutters' for production right now, a short play festival in chicago and another company in california wants me to extend it to a one-act. so we'll see how that goes. the fact that i'm being approached to be produced says a lot to me about my viability as a writer, and that maybe in this case i got the short end of the stick, but this might not be the last you hear of 'cutters'!

It had better not be the last I hear of 'cutters'!!!
It saddens me to hear that but I can see how Houston would be that way. Progressive it's not. Hypocritical it is. At least there are those that do appreciate your work and I would really enjoy seeing a bigger/longer 'Cutters'. It really works as a short piece, but there is so much that isn't said and I want to know more about these characters. I identified with all of them in one way or another. I wanted to protect Cealy--I think her character most of all was the one that reached in and tore out my heart. I've seen so much of how that evil has affected friends I've known and all of them were present in her.
I want to have hope for this city, but time after time it has dissappointed me. There are some brite points, like you and a few others, I feel isolated and unaccepted and that I must conform to be welcomed. BOLAX! I am not the most liberal of minds, but I certainly don't believe that everything can be peaches and cream and all sing song if I just focus on happy happy joy joy thoughts all day.
Finding dA and good people like yourself has been the best thing that has happened to me in years. I now realize and appreciate what I have and what I gave up and what matters most.
So damn the drones and let's shakem out of their complacency.
