thanks! Currently working on a youtube showcase for another artist here on deviant..
here's a couple I've done for two other artists as well. I do them for fun (no charge) just because I like to support my favorite artists and for me, it's another form of art. If you're interested, let me know. I can set one up for you.

yep that's one of them "color and light" he also has one called "imaginitive realism" - how to paint what doesnt exist. its amazing all the work making rough models he does for his paintings. i guess you would do that in 3d these days but the ideas are stull very valid

Hey Michael,
Quick change of subject. How do you feel about the education you got at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design, I presume) My daughter is interested in industrial design and she's still looking at different schools.

mikemars In reply to chyminy [2011-12-21 20:46:05 +0000 UTC]
it really depends on what she might see herself doing after she graduates.
in my opinion risd's ID program is too generalized and lacks real industry connections. they are more known for furniture making. yes they will teach id but its the furniture programs that are really serious within ID. were talking high end arty furniture as well, not so much mass production. when i was there the teachers had computer phobia in ID. i had to teach myself cad while using the computer centers, on my own. i dont know if that bias still exists. i hope not for god's sake.
risd is more of a fine arts school i think really. thier illustration and graphic design dpts are pretty strong. there is a good architecture school too. its focused on high end private housing. risd was originally founded to provide furniture and silver wares for the wealthy who lived in newport mansions around the 1920's that's their historical beginning. it influences what they are still good at today.
if she wants to go into car and entertainment design or illustration or graphic design i'd say go to art center Pasadena. they have the edge there. they are still the ones to beat in those programs.
if she's serious about ID in a more industrial capacity i'd say do Carnage Mellon, which i think is in Pittsburgh pa. RIT in Rochester ny was also good i remember. their programs are focused on giving students more industry experience with fortune 500 companies. like zerox cannon etc.
risd is still a great school but know it has a more traditional bent to it. they do have good staff and will certainly teach you to think creatively. their programs are more fine arts than commercial though. there are so many good schools out there its damn hard to choose.
i'd stay away from AI or art institutes if you can. its not to say she couldn't do well from there if she was focused and worked hard. its just that AI is very profit driven and you can graduate from there with easily a 100k of debt. for that price tag you might as well go for the gold and do top tire art schools instead. ive known many AI grads who felt cheated from that school.
on a personal note. i learned a-lot at risd but i wish i had went to art center instead. risd felt like it was more for those who's families were very wealthy already. families who could bank role their children s work after they graduated. i was from a more middle class backdrop and actually needed to get a job after school. i dont know where your comming from but thats another consideration in my opinion. a school with a good rep that has a good commercial arts orientation would be better if that's also the case for your daughter too.
its a huge subject. i hope i was somewhat coherent about it. one other thing i remember. i also wished i took some time after high school to try some self directed exploration before choosing a school. it would have also been good to transfer my liberal arts requirements from a community college before going to a powerful art school. that way you can really focus on art when your at your chosen art school. i remember thinking that those who had were more focused when they did go to art college. they seemed more aware of what they were doing than me, and had more studio time as well. that makes your projects better. doing liberal arts at the same time is very distracting and difficult.
again i hope i've said something intelligent. one other thing she could do is visit some companies in her area that use ID grads. scope out some small studios too. they might let her have a tour and give her some advice to boot. i did that after i graduated but ID professionals are very friendly about helping someone who is serious about it as a possible career path. never hurts to make a phone call right.
good hunting! and if i can help any further i'd be glad to.

I'm using a lot of sketchup 3d models for my graphic novel. 3D is really useful in that situation since the background and prop elements get repeated from frame to frame but often from different points of view.
Now I'm looking forward to getting the book! Gosh, so much to read, so little time.

that sounds like a very smart process to me. ive been thinking of doing the same lately. ive been doing my constructions by drawing but a model can really make it much more accurate. thats the great part about the books, they show you how to get where you want to go and stay grounded in a good process at the same time. i firmly believe if you get your process right the outcome will happen the way you want. its really all about being serious about process i think. i certainly agree with you about time too. i want more!
