Maybe. I did try to write this "genre mishmash" of a story (it was a mishmash because it included drama, romance, and comedy). The basic "plot" (if you could call it that) was a young woman (around the 18-19 years old range) had recently lost part of her left leg below the knee due to a car accident, and she's trying to deal with it. While in the hospital, she meets (and soon falls in love with) a young man (also around 18-19 or maybe 20 years old range) who lost part of his left arm below the elbow...

So yeah...

The general term is "Kemonomimi".

You throw a japanese animal name in front of "mimi" and you've got yourself a *insert animal here*-eared person.

No problem. I continue conversations that are months old all the time. Does the kemonomimi have functioning ears? Take, for example, the most common form of kemonomimi, the nekomimi. Can the cat ears be used for hearing purposes? If so, does the nekomimi have human ears as well? All the kemonomimi i've seen thus far have longish hair.

Ah, okay.

It really depends on who draws them.
The ones with 2 sets of ears, human and animal, USUALLY don't use the animal ears for anything other then for looking cute and/or for showing emotion.

For those people who are more like me, they tend to draw them with only animal ears, making them for emotion, but also for hearing.

As for the long hair part...I don't know. I think that most of the time they just have long hair to increase the cute/innocent and/or sexy factor. (That's just my guess though.)
