Part 2: What the lyrics really mean
So I remember I wasn't even looking for the particular meaning, I thought it was easy enough to understand now that I had had the lyrics (it's too easy to mishear - Plastic wrap sounds like Plastic Crabs HAHAHA and I always thought '
I was on a ND forum and some person offhandedly mentioned how "stoned" Gavin looked in this one pic and people were like "Oh yeah, he was" "Big time into drugs" but I wasn't sure if he really was until I read one user giving detailed info why he was and that Cellophane Boy really WAS all about Gwen struggling with Gavin's drug abuse. Suddenly the song made more sense but it having such a simple meaning, I felt it got a bit cheapened in the process, but then against perhaps my own interpretation was too ridiculous to be true!
Spoiler alert: Gavin used to be a HUGE drug addict. Breaking down the lyrics with their actual intent:
smoke's getting into my eyes - actual smoke, Gavin is so doped out most of the time he doesn't really care whether Gwen's there or not
I just might get you a life - Gwen gives Gavin a reason to clean up and accept responsibility for his life, but Gavin withdraws
can't relate to the hypnotist - not 100% sure but she's saying she can't make him do anything he doesn't want to do (force, as in hypnotism)
father's up inside the clouds - Gavin's literally "high" from all the drugs he does
circumstance has changed - She's saying Gavin is still cute but it's time to grow up and put down the pipe
lyrics about substitution crutch, protection - he uses drugs to keep distance from his pain (he had a difficult childhood in fact) instead of dealing with his emotional baggage
Oh, it's not the 70's - everyone was cracked out on drugs in the 70's because the damage wasn't really known back then. Gwen is trying to show Gavin that he really is making a mistake and wants him to get "naturally" high from being in love with her rather than with mary-jane or whatever he was doing.

When I heard the words of smoke and clouds I thought it might have been something with drugs... Didn't know for sure though...

HA! I have a funny story about this actually. I never knew what it meant for the longest time either, but I adored the song when I had my own meaning.
Okay, so check out the lyrics [link]
First off it's clear the song is about Gwen's then-boyfriend Gavin Rossdale (he is also the lead singer of the band Bush...I personally never liked him LOL but he is now Gwen's husband)
I thought it was simply about a man (boy, whatever) who was afraid to show love. "Smoke" I took to be a metaphor - from the phrase "smoke and mirrors" which meant to 'deceive.' Smoke is making Gwen cry (Gavin's lack of affection breaks Gwen's heart). Consider all the lyrics about "cellophane" and plastic wrap - he doesn't want anyone [Gwen] to touch him, to get too close.
I thought "And I want to have kids but their father's up inside the clouds" was the most tender, poignant lyric in the whole song because it's so full of heartache.
See, I thought she was implying that Gwen is praying for Gavin to get his act together because she wants to be the mother of his children. She says "their father's up inside the clouds" - that is, God, up in the clouds, knows who "he" is already and she dreads the possibility it's not Gavin... which is what she wants with all her heart. It also reads as a warning like... 'Hey if you don't knock this crap off, Gavin, it's not the end of my life, God/Heaven/The Powers that Be have a plan for me anyway.' (Gwen desperately wanted to marry Tony Kanal once too, but they broke up and that's why No Doubt is famous. Gwen was raised Catholic so that is why I saw religious undertones in the song).
