Well well well, I've obviously been away too long. You have some awesome stuff going on here. I actually particularly interested in your work with plasticard on the transformer and action figure as im working on similar projects myself right now. i'm building my own robotic race for Warhammer 40k (I saw your boltgun) which involves working on a tiny scale ..see here: [link] and [link] and a much larger robot loosely based on the "scarab" mecha in my gallery. ..I'm most interested in how you've built the joints for your action figure? keep me updated on your progress!

thanks
the transforming truck thing still has a long way to go,the short-term goal for now is to get it to stand on its own. the action figure's almost done, all it needs is some final detailing. i basically had to build the ball joints & matching sockets from scratch, with lots of trial & error. i believe i'm up to version 4 on these joints. hahaha.
your figures are awesome!
great design, i guess you can build each one in any pose imaginable.
i wish the 40K guys engineered their models this way.

Thats exactly the plan, I can cast these guys and then position them how I like, and being somewhat modular I can create new equipment as needed. i'm glad you like them!
Both the transformer & action figure are very impressive, I asked about the joints as on my larger model (no pic yet) I am using tiny neodymium magnets to give me some rotational movement, but of course its nowhere near as free as ball and socket.
I get the impression that you plan to produce more of these to sell, I wish you the best of luck with that (mine are for personal use only), do you plan to build each figure from scratch or will you be able to cast some pieces?

you designed them to have modular equipment too? very nice!
there are pre-made ball & socket joints made by WAVE & Kotobukiya.
maybe those could work for you.
yup, i was thinking about duplicating enough for a 6-man squad, but i'm not really sure if it's practical to recast some parts.

Yes, you're right, I've seen a few companies sell pre-made ball and socket joints. On my larger mech (still smaller than yours!), I actually built my own using plastic BBs (from toy guns you know?) and styrene cylinders as the socket (I ordered a load of Plastruct cylinders/rods & sheets for model making).
You're building six member mecha squad of your own design? That's awesome! It's a great feeling to create something from scratch, especially if its of your own design. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on! are you any good at painting models? ..Thats the bit that normally lets me down - doh!

great minds do think alike!
i use the BB/styrene tube joint on smaller projects. the problem i found with that was the size of the joint, so i went looking for the next best thing. push pins! now i can make joints as small as 3mm & as big as 10mm.
well, 6 is the plan. assuming the master model can actually be cast, & if the recast ball joints can survive the rigors of assembly. i think i actually need PVC or ABS for the duplicates.
painting should be fairly decent,
the last project i painted turned out pretty well.
