Well, Photoshop is awesome if you can get it, but there are other cheaper options like Paint Tool SAI or ArtRage, which probably also have demo versions for you to try. Having a graphics tablet is also very important for creating digital art, but... you don't have to start digital... in fact it's probably better if you don't! I think you'll learn basic drawing skills much easier with paper and pencil than if you were to use a computer.

I, myself, am trying to take a break from digital stuff for a while so I can properly learn and practice my skills. Today I bought myself a blue sketching pencil ("non photo blue" is nice 'cause it doesn't show up much if you scan an inked picture later) and a brush-tip pen, so we'll soon find out what I can do with just those two things! (and maybe some Copic Sketch markers to color the lineart... if I actually succeed at producing any decent lineart... if I actually succeed at producing any decent SKETCHES to make lineart for ... but such markers are muchly 'spensive and probably out of your reach for now. Colored pencil would work fine, too.) If you do go traditional, though, I should mention that kneaded erasers are AWESOME!!

Sounds cool! My dad has a bamboo tablet and pen, and I think it came with coral painter or something like that. I'll try that out. What's a good way to practice your drawing? The only animal I know how to draw is a wolf, but I want to expand and understand how to draw more. How did you teach yourself?

Well, I'm still working on teaching myself! I'm not actually very good at drawing yet, but I can sorta scribble and erase things until they look right on the computer (which is why I suggest learning to REALLY draw and not how to scribble ). The best way to practice... is to actually get started! Go sketch something random on a piece of paper, and no, you're not allowed to procrastinate! References help if you're trying to draw something new, but I bet it'd also help a bunch just to draw the animal you already know in different poses.

Oh, and yea - corel painter and bamboo tablet should be fine tools for you when you decide you want to make something digital.

Well, in Photoshop, when you have something selected, your painting / filling will only appear inside the selected area, so you can use the selection sorta like a stencil. The magic wand selects entire areas of a certain color, which makes it a useful tool which allows you to quickly select an uncolored area, then paint in it without worrying about going outside of the lines.

I'm CodeFly, a fucked-up, miserable abomination of the human race who can't and shouldn't ever have friends caring, compassionate, helpful friend to many people, even if you dont realize it . I fail spectacularly at virtually everything human, like basic thought and speech speaking and socializing doesnt come naturally to everyone , and can't score higher than a pathetic 25% on those rediculously easy cash cab questions cash cab sucks, i fail at it. I lost my job last November and now sit here like an idiot wishing hopelessly that things might one day get better. But they won't, because I am already miserable, and without the slightest bit of hope or interest to hold on to, and thus, wouldn't be able to motivate myself to be able to keep a new job even if I got one. they'll get better

Oh, and you'd better stay far away from me, because I'm a monster, and if you don't, I'll try to be nice to you and end up finding a way to hurt us both. I'm good at hurting people. And then I get to add one more thing to the pile of stuff I hate about myself to make things ever more hopeless." no... just... no. Misunderstandings happen, its how you HANDLE it that makes all the difference. Im the perfect example, because obviously.. i dont handle them well.

I guess things are going okay... my life is fairly uneventful right now, though I went to "vocational rehab" for the first time last Thursday... I still feel very lost as to what I'm looking for in a new job, though... all my passion was drained during my last job, and I'm really scared that accepting an "any job" without any passion for it is going to leave me in the same unhappy place I was in...
