Thank you soooo much for the fave!!
=///= Your whole gallery always amazes me. I'm a starter at pastels and just seeing the way you work with them literally killed me. It's so impressive!! Both the crazy amount of details you manage to get in, but also the way you use colors!! =w=''' Mine always get saturated before I can really start on the details I want to add in =w='' You really are godly with those!

No prob! THanks for checking out my gallery too! I love your work! Keep going!
I have a few pointers for your saturation problem: Plan out your color scheme more fully or try using a different, rougher paper (like cold press water color paper or canson color paper). they also make a specific paper for pastel that allows a person to have a heavy hand, called sennelier or wallace paper (feels like sand paper and it will eat your pastels). there is also working with pastel pencils but you need to keep your layers light. A more expensive (but worth it) method is pan pastels which will allow for beautiful under painting coverage so you are allowed to go crazy on the details on top!
...I hope that's not too much information to throw at you... I'm kinda crazy about my mediums I use.... Please feel free to ask me any questions or to tell me to stfu if you want. lol! Pastels are fun to explore and see what you can get out of them! Just keep practicing!!!!

You'll never see me telling you to shut up after this kind of great advice!! XD Never ever!! This is so goig to help, seriously!!
=w= I've only started using pastels a few weeks ago, and actually it's my first real beginning with colors, sooo right now I'm trying out bunches of media (and I have to say, my heart sways between pastels and acrylics XD). My problem with pastels is that I like to use lots of layers, I don't like smudging at all but I don't like it too rough either, sooo to make up for it I use all those bunches of layers to make the result smooth... Without smudging it. Does that make sense?? =w=' But well usually this works even with oversaturated colors when I only need to add in the very dark ones, or blues most of the time... But yes... It kills it for details. =w=''
I think I'll try to go and see if I can find those papers!! I took note of the names, and I'm definitely thankink you for those!!
I also saw that you're crazily good at gouache XD Would it be a little too much to ask you about that too? I've never used it to be honest (apart to paint cats and horses when I was a kid- *sighs* ) and I don't know much how to use it... Do you use it with water? Does it usually work well for you with bunches of layers, like acrylics?
...I-I don't dare try oil pastels yet, they kinda scare me =w=''' Because I'm usually so messy, with pastels and acrylics I can use and transform my mistakes but oil pastels... >.> when I look at them, I feel a bit like a stain is going to be, like... Definitive. =w=''
XD Sorry for asking so many question!! Definitely feel free to tell me to stfu too!! >^<

DUDE! If there is one thing I am ABSOLUTELY in love with it is my media! I want to look into being a teacher after I try freelance for a while. So feel free to ask me anything you want to know. I wish you were in this area, I could give a demo.
Gouache, like any other medium, takes practice and patience. It's bold like acrylic and water soluble like watercolor. It's best used flat.
The way to make it lie flat is to add water until the paint is the consistency of melted ice cream. Try working with different papers to see which works best and work with the paint to see what is the best consistency for you.
I prefer to use cold/ rough press watercolor paper (at least 120 pounds so it won't warp). The melted ice cream consistency works best for me on that paper because it allows me to add layers and details over bigger washes of color. When it comes to adding layers, you have to be careful because the paper will only hold so much before the under layers will start coming up with your brush strokes. Make sure the layers on the paper are COMPLETELY dry before making another layer on top.
Arches cold press is my favorite, the heavier the poundage the more layers the paper will take. Some people will use hot press watercolor paper (smoother surface), Bristol, or illustration board (cold or hot press). Smoother papers won't hold as many layers and I find that the paint will try and slide off as you paint. Try getting samples of both cold and hot press papers, and experiment with everything.
Gouache is amazing for details!!!! I love using it over my watercolors for details and have the watercolors be the under painting!
TONS O' INFO!!!!!! Any questions, just msg me!!!
PS: Don't fear oil pastels or how you use pastels! I didn't smudge my Allie pastel piece, I got that texture by just layering the pastel marks. Just try different open marks (like hatching) instead of coloring things in! Take a closer look at the wings and you may be able to see what I did exactly. Oil pastels are the same way, they are just more gooey! If you like smoother images, try oil pastels!

Awwwwww, I'm so sorry to reply so late!!
But as a first thing I need to say : THANK YOU SO MUCH !! You can't imagine how much your advice helped me!!!
I actually tried gouache -FINALLY- and I loved it!! It has actually become one of my favorites, along with acrylics!!
My first try gave me a pretty hard time, to be honest. I still wasn't sure how the paint would react, and since I wasn't used to using so much water in my paint, I couldn't control it all so well... But THEN! I went crazy with the awesomeness! All the possibilities in textures and colors literally stunned me, and I still can't get over it!
I only put up my first gouache here on dA, and I probably saturated it way too much, using it a bit like I would use acrylics on some part, but since then I tried in on another work that came out much better, I'll definitely add it here too!
You know, it feels so GREAT to be able to ask someone so open and ready to answer about those things! You seriously saved me. =w= Usually I don't dare ask those things all that much, but you really got me motivated and ready to try more things! I think you'd definitely make a great teacher, you're precise and enthusiastic yet not restrictive, so you give info to people without making them feel overwhelmed and while motivating them!
PS : Once I'm a bit more used to gouache... I'll try oil pastels!! >v<

And don't hesitate if you have anything you need to know! I may not answer immediately but I will tell you what I know. I'm also glad there is someone out there who is as enthusiastic about different mediums as I am. Keep an eye out, I have a few new pieces I'm going to be posting soon!

AH, it's been such a long time!!
You don't know how MUCH you've helped me, seriously!! I definitely claim my pure love for acrylics (I think they'll be my babies for life, they're just too good ;v; ), my adoration for pastels, and... well! XD I'm not so good with gouache but still trying! (I think I'm not so good at planning when I have to place my light colors first >^< ) And I discovered a new love for oils!!! Oil pastels AND oil paint! Oil pastels are so FAST to work with, it's incredible!! O////o Well I haven't taken picture of my oil works yet, but here are links oooof acrylics, gouache and pastel works!!! T-Thank you so much again =///= I bless you every single time I take a brush and start painting. =w=

I did it yesterday and it's funny, but that was the highlight of my day. I had another class that is not my favorite or most rewarding class... But from what I was told, I did very well! So much so that I was asked to do ANOTHER demo next week on Wednesday. I'm super excited and maybe this time I can have someone record it for me so I can post it! Thanks so much for your support!!!!!

Oooo! Just to let you know! I did an oil pastel piece!!! I hope I can post it soon so you can tell me what you think! You may be interested in trying them out! I'm doing senior project this semester so it's been busy. But I'm enjoying making my own work and using the mediums I love! U have to tell me what you think when I post something new!!!
