Reminds me why I like One Piece. There's no god-modding. Everyone has a power-set that allows for flexible and creative use (if they bother to experiment) and have a weakness that can be exploited if an opponent becomes aware of it. In too many stories you end up having characters with ill-defined powers that are just too powerful to connect with since it takes an equally outrageous character to even pose a threat.

Yeah, I can agree about that. It seems to me that designing eccentric weirdos is more Oda's bread and butter. When it comes to designing characters that are supposed to be found attractive, he seems to be somewhat restrained.
Though, in Amazon lily arc we did see pretty good variety of female character desings, so I don't know.

You know what I think One Piece does better than most other anime? When you have a character survive a hit that people expected to lay them out flat, THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A BELIEVABLE REASON. It really bugs me in anime and cartoons in general when the characters, like Sasuke, get hit with an electrified power bomb through the center of the Earth and SOMEHOW aren't dead.
