So... why are you a dragon, and a train?

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-06 05:19:33 +0000 UTC]

Because of reasons (otherkin stuff...) for the dragon part and I have just had an interest in trains for... I can't remember when it started to be honest.

I have two at the moment (they change from time to time)
The Victorian railways Y class and the National Rail NR class locos.

Yus, all Aussie ones. Methinks I may be a bit biased about choosing those locos...

why?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-07 23:33:51 +0000 UTC]

I live pretty close to where those two loco's are from, ie the-state-they-run-in close XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-08 00:05:06 +0000 UTC]

Lucky you, got loco pretty big. Ours are short and chubbyΒ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-09 04:40:31 +0000 UTC]

We're a bit spoiled for choice in big locos here, you actually get sick of them after a while so I like those smaller loco's that you speak of just as much

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-09 04:43:50 +0000 UTC]

well, big locos got sent to Sumatra instead, hauling heavy coal train. In Java mostly passengers, so yep. Cuddly-shunter-sized mainline engines and bunch of caterpillars. Although we -used- to have oversized cape gauge steam engines back in 30s, but most of them already gone.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-09 12:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Ah, all transferred away. Those 'cuddly shunter sized' loco's wouldn't happen to be those sort of wedge cabbed UM20C's would they?
And the classic story of deiselisation, the big, impressive steam loco's all/mostly dissappear. Pity they go because there was some cool locos back then.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-09 12:45:47 +0000 UTC]

You hit the nail there. U20Cs are really popular in here. At least for passenger service. But yeah, we still have smaller shunter, those BB diesel. Either used for shunting or local, short-distance train with passenger cars no more than 2-3 carsΒ

Dieselization in here weren't such a big deal, since all steam locomotives we have were only tank engines. We don't have tender engines that many, the last were D52 Mikado type, were withdrawn sometimes in early 90s, if I'm not mistaken.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-10 00:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah, we have only one (that I think we imported from over your way and has been owned by 3 different companies before it even ran!) but I like the engines in them, 8 cylinder 7FDL engines are not too common but sound pretty cool to me.

Lucky, it'd have been pretty cool to see steam run right up until that recently!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-10 01:38:19 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I've seen it. The only U20 in Australia.Β

Even so, I was born 4 years after the last steam ran so... yeah :9 The only steam that still run up until now are 2 rack-railway in central Java and West Sumatra, as well one inner-city steam tour in Solo. Hmmm.... I remember Rob Dickinson steam site mentioning about some Sugar Mill still using steam engines to haul sugar train until mid-2008

*pet you again*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-10 04:18:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I'd heard there were a couple sugar railways that still used steam until recently. Here it was all gone by the mid 70's and mostly gone by the end of the 60's.

*purrs again*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-10 06:33:18 +0000 UTC]

*keep petting you*

One mill near my aunt's house, it used to have plenty of tracks serving sugar plantation. But heck, I was upset when they finally lift the tracks off. The demolished the small yard and buried the remaining tracks.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-10 08:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Awww, I would be dissappointed if they did that too. It seems like such a waste every time a piece of railΒ  infrastructure is taken away.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-10 08:55:09 +0000 UTC]

yeah, they prefer truck instead. Can't help it, the trucks are bigger in size and width, so they capable to haul more cane with less fuel and money to spend, compared to sugar atrain. But still it's will be nice of them if they preserve one of the biggest narrow gauge locomotive I ever seenΒ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-10 11:21:09 +0000 UTC]

Pity for the railways that trucks got so efficient but that's business I guess. I hope whatever loco that is gets preserved, there's some interesting looking cane loco's out there that I've seen.

Do Aussies have Mallet by any chance?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-11 07:57:08 +0000 UTC]

I think the closes we had were Garrats, I don't think we had any Mallet loco's but I could be wrong.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-11 08:51:10 +0000 UTC]

oooh, Garrats. We don't have Garrats but Mallets, it's like heaven for Mallets here. From small 0-4-4-0 to 2-8-8-0.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-11 10:49:19 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, nice. Those 2-8-8-0's wouold be a sight to see!
We had the AD60 Garrats in one state and on various narrow gauge lines we had 'ASG's and a mix of oddballs.

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-12 02:55:48 +0000 UTC]

interesting and some of them quite... elusive I'd say... Like I swear I saw twice, one and the only DD51 class ex-JNR painted yellow (maintenance locomotive, perhaps) somewhere in Central Java.Β

Hmmm interesting. Only thing I have to compare would be the elusive EM100 track inspection car we have here.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GingaTokkyu In reply to DounutCereal [2014-02-12 08:22:44 +0000 UTC]

never seen it or what, if I may ask?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DounutCereal In reply to GingaTokkyu [2014-02-12 12:17:37 +0000 UTC]

They send it over ever piece of track in the state, even over 2 different gauges, at least once every 3 or so months to check track quality. If you're lucky you'll see it parked somewhere, or if you're even luckier you will spot it actually running.

Here's a photo of it if you're interested:
