Do you have a Sta.sh or link to the skin?  And explain what is wrong and what you want to accomplish.  Some things might not be possible on deviantART because our CSS is limited.  But we do now have transitions and transforms.  Good luck with your skin, I hope we can help you.

All I have in Sta.sh is the image for the journal. sta.sh/0wta1unn20q
The actual CSS was done on the journal skins so I could see what I was doing- I'm not exactly sure how to manage anything else. ;;

What I was trying was the actual journal on the right [with scrolling] which I accomplished [sorta], and a fixed box [like for stamps or features] that I see on many journals to the right, stopping just over the lower image.
The left box ends up fine [though I have issues making the scrollbar appear only when I need to scroll] but the right either floats away or ends up as a footer inches below the journal. I could send the CSS, because I feel like I made a mess of it and spent so long I don't know where I'm at.

For the scroll bar to appear only when there is excess content, use "overflow:auto;".  If there is less content, there will be no scrollbar.  If you want it to appear only on the hover, set to "overflow:hidden;" then on hover, switch to "overflow:auto;".

For the sidebar, there are two diffferent ways of handling that.  I think I have a couple links handy to the tutorials for those by ginkgografix ...  Okay, I cannot flag the link.  Maybe she can jump in on the conversation.    I see you have it set to absolute positioning.  But that is probably attaching it to the size of the window rather than the size of your content.  Depending on the design, it may or may not work for you.  The other way is to give it a float property "float:right;".  This will make it float beside the content in the position you want.  However, when you have short journal content, you will want to clear that out.  I would make a clear div which gets rid of the float.  You can put the HTML in your footer of the skin to keep that.

CSS
.clear{
clear:both;
}

Then in footer

Hopefully that would work better for your design.  I would still prefer to see it.  If you could set up a Sta.sh journal with the skin on it (add filler content so I can see what it looks like and how it behaves).

I've put it in Sta.sh for you to see:
sta.sh/02braaiu4ws6
I can't get it to just drift far to the right like it used to anymore, now it's just staying under the journal as the footer. To the right, fortunately, but not where I need it.

I've placed the divs you mentioned, but it kept giving me errors about insufficient coding or whatnot.
It's become such a mess I'm not sure what goes where anymore... ;;;;

Okies, looks like between the two of us, your skin may be fixed.  Let either of us know if you still have questions.  Just put a mention (@*name* or :dev*name*: ) to tag us in so we both have seen the conversation to not repeat things.  Good luck!

Heya!   I have another question.   You guys have been so super-helpful!!!

Is there a way to dynamically add, using CSS, an author byline to a group skin?  So that anyone reading it automatically knows who wrote it and submitted it to the group?   I hunted through all the resources I had bookmarked... and if it's there I just completely missed it.   Any idea?

Thanks again, you guys!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to NightsongWS [2014-06-29 06:33:36 +0000 UTC]

If you publish a group journal such an author line is added automatically. Some skins have removed it via CSS though, so that it doesn't show up (as it sometimes makes trouble with aligning and such).

In case you use a skin that doesn't list the author in your group, search in the CSS code for .author {display: none;} and remove that bit.

NightsongWS In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2014-06-30 19:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Aha!!  Thank you!!!!   That is exactly what I was hoping for!

I only have one extra query, if it's ok:  Do you know if there's an equivalent tag for old-fashioned journal skins?  Or is that a gruze-only tag?  I have two skins I was looking for help with: one Gruze and one not, and the one that uses the classic coding doesn't have a tag of that sort that's removing it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to NightsongWS [2014-06-30 19:17:34 +0000 UTC]

I think it's a group thing and doesn't depend on the journal code structure it has used.
My suggestion would be to just give it a try. Perhabs it will work if you add .author{display: block;} on your own?

Haven't worked with the old structure since a while, so i can't promise anything.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NightsongWS In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2014-07-01 03:06:41 +0000 UTC]

I did it!!!

But... I had to Gruze the journal.  No matter what I tried, the old journal structure wouldn't take it.

But it is solved now, and that is THE most important thing!!  Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   One less thing to worry about!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to NightsongWS [2014-07-01 06:40:43 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!

Yeah, the old structure is very limited. Even if the gruze-structure can be annoying first, it is much more flexible.

Haha, yeah. That's how i see it as well. As long as it works, it's all fine

When you also buy webspace you usually get it all in a package.

A website from a german hosting company would always be in german, anything else doesn't make much sense. Beside that you always would have to follow the copyright rules and stuff from the country your website is hosted. And usually it is easier for you, as a client, to stay within your own country.

For your problem it would just require a wider image, that could cover the areas at the left and right for wider screens.

Have added your request to our Helping Corner. Maybe someone can help you with creating a new design for your group.

I can help if the skin is fairly simple.  I don't have the time to dedicate to another complicated skin as I am creating one for one of my groups.  You can look at the groups I run (GiveALlamaGetALlama , ArtisticAnimanga , Euphau ) for ideas of my skinning skills.

You can hit me up with a note. :3

There's a few ways to achieve this.  Easiest, use the thumb code.  You can also do the tag.  For the background image, you need a special code trick.  I recommend using the following

Heya!  I am re-teaching myself CSS after many years but, despite a whole lot of research and trial and error, I am still running into a couple of specific problems with the Group blog CSS I am working on.  Is there someone that I could contact or ask a question or two?  Thanks in advance for any help!

01309 In reply to NightsongWS [2014-06-04 22:59:57 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, that "footer" is not actually a part of the journal body.  It annoys me greatly as well and it was something that was added within the past year I believe.  The only way to "hide" it would be if someone created a browser extension that removed that small part.  If you inspect the element this is the div class:

And if you dig deeper into the CSS  there are specific styles (a.more is journal title, a.comments, a.faves, you get the idea).

However, coding any of these into the skin of the journal does nothing to remove the ugly footer below the journals.  :\  You could try asking the staff, like $ikue.

NightsongWS In reply to 01309 [2014-06-05 06:51:29 +0000 UTC]

Darn!!!!   As disappointing as that is, I'm thankful for the information.  Thank you!!!

I thought I was going crazy.  Nothing I did got anywhere near changing that area of the journal but, clearly, it IS tied into the journal mechanics somehow.  For some reason, the mis-aligned date part of the footer doesn't show up with every skin either, but I haven't been able to track down just why that is.  Asking Ikue is a really good idea... I hate to bother any of the admins, but it may -be- the only thing we can do.

Again, thank you very much for the research and the info!!!    You ROCK!!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ikue In reply to NightsongWS [2014-06-05 17:37:46 +0000 UTC]

Heya! I'm afraid that area isn't actually a part of the journal itself but rather code used by the governing page that displays the journal. We only give you access to edit the CSS for the journal HTML itself. Unfortunately you won't be able to edit that bit. Sorry…

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NightsongWS In reply to Ikue [2014-06-14 03:15:07 +0000 UTC]

Ack, this got buried in my message center and I missed it!  I'm so sorry!!!

Darn!  Thank you for the info, though!   It's good to know for sure.  That black date hovering in the "Comments/Favorites" area of the Group skin I'm using has been driving me batty.  It only shows up for some skins, not others (it doesn't show up on the "Mellow Yellow" skin of yours, for example) but knowing that we can't actually -do- anything about it is a bit of a relief -- it means I don't have to spend any more hours tinkering to try and make it go away! LOL!!

  Thank again you for the info!!!!!!

I solved a couple of my problems on my own!!!    It only took a -little- blood, sweat, and tears!   Of the remaining problems, well, one of them looks like a problem that the folks at this group have, too: the floating date at the bottom of a Group blog entry that has been skinned with CSS.   I have tried taking out all different parts of my skin, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it go away -or- color it to match the background of the site.  Nothing I do affects it at all.  Do you folks have any ideas for things I could try?

Immerot In reply to NightsongWS [2014-05-15 03:17:10 +0000 UTC]

NightsongWS In reply to Immerot [2014-05-15 17:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Sure thing!
DNA-Deviants    <- That page has the skin.

This is the problem area:
screencast.com/t/r91RUMC87

I don't mind the comments or favorites line so much, even though I will be swapping images into and out of those shadowboxes, but the date is really distracting.  I know it is a little thing, I really, really do, but it's that sort of thing that will just get more annoying and gnawing the more I know anyone sees it.

I didn't notice it until I saw your original reply, but you can see the same thing happening at the bottom of eCSSited 's skinned journal entries:
screencast.com/t/hZxhQMoxiUi2

Again, thank you SO much for your time and help!!!!!  It's so very much appreciated!  I've been going bonkers getting this group page together!!!!
