The sound of hooves on tussled dirt is heard faintly in the distance -- what seems an echo at first reveals itself as the sound of many horsemen, genuflexing upward to some unknown god, whiskey bottles in hand, howling like pack-wolves.

A young woman hears them, and stands, squinting against the paley luminous sun which had not reddened yet , but would. In that same pose she holds until, at least, they reach her -- stopping but for a little while one man leans, and tousles her hair, then, swigging, rides away.
