Mountain goats are not native to Colorado. Mountain goats natural southern range was northern Wyoming. The first goats were released in the Mount Evans area in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Early placement consisted on eight to fourteen goats. Since then additional goats have been imported from the north and the herds have prospered and multiplied. There are now as estimated 90 to 100 mountain goats in the Mount Evans region. They tend to herd together and are most frequently sighted in the rocky cliffs above timberline.
During your trip to the top of Mount Evans you will likely encounter mountain goats anywhere from Mt. Goliath Natural Area to the summit parking lot. Feel free to take as many pictures as you want, BUT DO NOT FEED THEM
If you have a dog in your vehicle, expect the goats to disperse within one to two minutes of dog barks, as dogs are a natural enemy.
