French. Whoohoo. The language I cannot spell, even though I'm good at spelling English, Spanish, German, AND Japanese by ear. Alack.
It was scary, but since said fluent speaker was my mother, and since she left because of medical problems that seemed likely to be cancer (sounds like it's probably not, now, thank stars), I was really really happy to distract myself with Spanish. It was much easier than worrying, and much less frightening than the idea of my mother being seriously ill.
It was AWESOME. An awesome llama. I'll have to see if any pictures are DA-worthy . . .

Oh man I know. It's so hard to spell. And freaking pronounce. I said something once, and one of my friends was like, "God bless you." But anyway. I've always wanted to be able to speak Japanese. All I got is like, two phrases.
Oh wow. Yeah that is a good distraction, because you actually have to concentrate and make sure you don't say anything stupid. I'm always afraid that that's going to happen to me. Like I'm going to say something inappropriate. Well I hope your mom is ok...that's pretty scary.
You should post some anyway. And then scrap them or something. I wanna see the awesome llama!

Haha. I have a friend who says gezundheit every time I speak Japanese.
Actually, I'm completely self-taught. There's a lot of books out there and they ALL say different things. I think my favorite is Japanese for Dummies, but really beyond that I learned most of my Japanese from animes/mangas and J-POP. Yuss.
Yeah, she seems to be getting better, so that's good.
I think I know enough Spanish to only sometimes make a fool of myself -- but I know a LOT of inappropriate things and how not to say them, thanks to the dunces in my high school Spanish classes. Six years ago. Oh stars...
Though I did find out yesterday that one of my favorite words to say was one I was using wrong. In a nonsensical way. Instead of saying "I *try* to speak Spanish" I was telling the poor Peruvians "I *deal with* speaking Spanish" . . . what does that even mean? I treat speaking Spanish! Ha!
Moral of the story: when fluent mother exits country, make sure she leaves her dictionary with YOU.

Knowing how not to say things is always useful. I think that's only happened to me once, and fortunately it was in a paper, so I didn't totally embarrass myself...apparently there are two ways to say "excited" in French. *ahem*
