Dude, I've got a majorly awesome idea for a few pics you could do. Now keep in mind, I'm NOT commissioning you for anything, but the ideas I'm about to suggest sound like they're up your ally, and I wanted to run them by you. My first idea is to pay homage to the obvious upcoming pirate alliance between The Straw Hats, The Heart Pirates, The Happo Navy, The Beautiful Pirates, and Barto Club, by dressing up the captains of these five crews like the Pirate Power Rangers and pull off an epic yet comical and mismatched group pose while an explosion goes off in the background. Luffy could be Red, Law is Blue, Bartolomeo is Green, Cavendish is Pink (and an okama), and by process of elimination Sai will be wearing a male version of the Yellow outfit. My other idea is an epic three-way face-off between Kaido, Big Mom, and Gear Fourth Luffy. Seriously, even if you don't go for the first one, you NEED to do the face-off pic. Again, I won't be paying you for this or anything, but if you're even half the One Piece and fan and artist you say you are, then you CANNOT let an idea like this pass you by. Who cares if a complete image of Big Mom hasn't been released yet? I think you can manage just fine by guesstimating what she looks like based on the already known partial image. Let me know what you think.

Yeah, I saw. It really irks me how Marty Stu Law can get second and yet someone as awesome as Kinemon doesn't even place. HE LOST TO A FREAKING RAT!! HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?!?

Law making second isn't surprising, really. He made 10th place in the 4th poll with only a few chapters of existence. He's done so much since then that it'd be hard Β to go down in popularity. He's also the epitome of fanservice for female readers and he has an OP ability to justify his screen time. His interactions with the crew also caught people's attention, like his reaction to 'falling into Luffy's pace.' We were also into his backstory when the poll started and I'm sure if the poll had ended after the flashback ended Corazon would have been higher up. Merch also backs up his popularity, selling out quickly when it's available.Β
Kinemon (who got 101st place according to the SBS), on the other hand, doesn't have too much that appeals to Japanese readers. He's a samurai which isn't exactly new to them and he doesn't have anything visually interesting about him to make him stand out beyond Samurai. He uses the same weapon as Zoro and while he can use fire that doesn't make it too different in a fight. Brook also uses a sword but, since it's a different style of sword, it's a different style of fighting. He has the ability to change clothing and disguise like a Kitsune or Tanuki but it's been played fairly straight so it's just like 'oh okay he can do that'. Useful but not that exciting. The only thing left to make him interesting would be personality quirks. Unfortunately his quirks are perviness (which is already covered by Sanji and Brook) and I guess his ability to speak through his farts but that wasn't used much more than that one time and hasn't been mentioned much by fans since. Other than that he's a lot like Jimbei, played too straight and designed too traditionally to standout.
Kanjuro actually scored higher than him because he looks different than most characters and his quirk enhances his ability. Seriously, a guy who can make living art but can't draw well? That works together perfectly for comedy. It's like the doodle bob episode of Spongebob.Β
Relevance is also a big issue since people are more likely to vote for characters that are currently active than those that are non active which is why so many Dressrosa characters. A lot of those (with the exception of Bartolomeo because he's a Luffy fanboy and that's hilarious) will become less popular after the arc ends. Only characters that stand out last in people's minds beyond their relevant arc. If a character is epic, good for fanservice, uniquely styled, uniquely funny, sacrificed or heroic, etc (characters like Mihawk, Hancock, Perona, Ace, Shanks, etc for example) they will likely remain popular well beyond their arcs even if they don't do too much. When the plot gets to Wano and Kinemon's character is further developed he might pick up in popularity a bit but he just hasn't done enough to be fresh in people's minds and he's not unique enough to stand out when he's not super relevant.Β
As for the rat, people often vote for joke characters. For example, a group of friends or a class might go in together on a vote to see if they can get a completely random character on the chart.Β
Sorry to write so much but I actually do study the Japanese merch market and artbase to see what's popular over there so this is an interesting topic for me.
