Hey.
I'm going to examine your perception of the situation.
(please listen for a while, pull up a chair. I didn't want this to be too long but it looks like I was actually able to write an essay for once -_-)
You compare your art to other people's on this website. You've never met these artists. All you know is their projection of their process, in their own words, and the finished products of their work.
You want people to enjoy your art. It seems to give you a sense of worth when they do.
You seem to think that people who you've judged to have a higher level of technical skill are more successful in life. You seem to relate their success to real-life popularity as well.
You know that people appreciate your art. But you don't see the reciprocation of positive interactions in your everyday life. So you feel invalidated.
I think you're misjudging the situation.
(and by the way, I'm not saying all this to make you feel worse. I'm saying it because I used to have the same way of thinking: that I had to validate myself through art and that would give me worth as a person. If people liked my art, I'd get a boost and feel like I had worth. If they didn't like it, I didn't feel that sense of worth.)
Let me tell you something. How successful you, or other people, judge you to be in a particular skill has NOTHING to do with your worth. Not a jot.
If you or someone else judge you to be successful in art, that's all it is. If you or someone else judges you to be unsuccessful, that's all it is.
You don't need to chalk up judgement of your art as a personal inadequacy. Because it just isn't.
It's great to know that people enjoy your work. But the reality is, beyond a certain point, for your own good, you have to stop caring about who's looking at the art. About who likes it, who doesn't.
My teacher said something the other day. She said we make our best art when we're not thinking of who'll like it. It's when we're making the decisions we feel are right, going on OUR preferences and intuitions, that we'll have the most confidence in our work.
You're not Rembrandt. You're not Egon Schiele. You don't need to be like any other artist on the planet. Because you're YOU. That's what your audience (if you decide you want one)will love. Your own uniquely beautiful art. They won't be comparing you to twelve-year-olds, and neither should you.
Just love yourself, ok?
And of course I'm here if you want to talk about stuff. Believe me, I know what it's like.
