FreezingIceKirby In reply to ??? [2015-01-07 02:58:34 +0000 UTC]

At least, unlike other Data East titles, it's not overtly-frustrating.

I don't know about that one.  I tried it the other day, and that does describe the game for the most part... until the second-to-last boss, that is.  Seriously, he's brutal... at least, I thought he was.  Surprisingly, I managed to get past him by sheer luck, only to get bombarded by the final stage... which is just utterly ridiculous (imagine crates getting thrown at your face, forever).  No joke, the game ended up getting the best of me that day.

(Shame of it is, I probably could try harder and learn how to play the game better, but it really is run-of-the-mill.  There's nothing really special about it, and it's hard to go back to it after stopping.  Ehh, maybe one day...)

In any case, thanks for answering my question.

Ah, well, Data East strikes again.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who came up playing "Joe And Mac"...so I suppose I'm a connoisseur of punishment, if not a glutton.

I've played some Joe and Mac in my younger days... though that was on the NES I believe, and taking a peak at that version via google search shows me it was watered down from the Arcade and Genesis versions, so I wasn't getting the full experience.  Perhaps that's good incentive to hunt the game down and give the true, complete version a go, ehh?  I wouldn't mind that.

Given the regularity of NES versions of games when compared to the original arcade versions, I would agree.  As far as difficulty issues, I wouldn't call it legendary or anything.  It's not like "Joe And Mac" is known for its difficulty, like say, "Ghosts 'n Goblins".

So, I've got some news that'll make you feel a lot better about the minds at Hollywood; apparently, not only is there going to be a Tetris movie, but someone's also rebooting some film called "I Am Legend", there's going to be a Baywatch film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and they also just recently announced an Indiana Jones 5.

....Wait, did I say make you feel better about Hollywood?  Pardon, I meant to actually say hate them more.

Ah.  Well, then, mission accomplished.

I noticed the "Tetris" news made mention on the NPR show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me".  They said the same thing at the pitch press release that I noticed about the many news outlets who reported this--there was this litany of saying things in the article title like "this is real", "no kidding", "not a joke", etc.

FreezingIceKirby In reply to ??? [2014-08-13 20:08:50 +0000 UTC]

Hey, got a question to ask, if you don't mind.  You're my Sega expect, so I thought I'd come to you with this.

(And pardon me if I've asked you this before.  I think I have, but my memory sucks, so... )

Since you're into the Sega Dreamcast stuff and whatnot, have you played a game called "Skies of Arcadia"?  It's something I've wanted to play for a long time now... but it's one of those rare games that's difficult to come by (both on Dreamcast and the Gamecube re-release).  I've wanted to play it for a loooong time now, but haven't had the chance as of yet... and I get the feeling if I want to (honestly, no downloads)... I"m going to have to pay a good $60 for it (or more).

But before that, is there anything you can tell me about it?  If you've played it... what would you say about it?  Would you recommend it to those who are fans of the whole turn-based games?  Anything at all you can tell me?  I'd deeply appreciate it.

SSProjects In reply to FreezingIceKirby [2014-08-14 13:57:10 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't call "Skies" unmissable, but if you're into turn-based adventures, it's well-worth having.  It's right up there with so many of the role-players that have come in series ("Suikoden", "Tales Of...", "Evolution") while not having a series of its own, at least, as far as I'm aware.    So, that's good if you like getting a story over with. And, what a sharp story!  Great characters could teach Jack Sparrow...well, everything about being a pirate, and it takes place in a world that was thoughtfully built.  It also uses a combat system that's solid and actually fun, so that's different.  To be forthright, I've played the game on both platforms, though I use the Gamecube version more, wanting to keep the Dreamcast copy as nice as possible.  I'm not certain what kind of research you've done on price, but you may want to shop it a little more.  Given what a new game goes for nowadays, "Skies of Arcadia" is still well worth $60.

FreezingIceKirby In reply to SSProjects [2014-08-14 14:23:28 +0000 UTC]

I see.  In that case, I think I'll definitely find plenty of enjoyment out of it, so I'll give it a go.  Thanks!

I'm not certain what kind of research you've done on price, but you may want to shop it a little more.

I mostly checked around Ebay (under "Buy it now") and Amazon... and $50 is just the lowest I've found, as sometimes it goes up well beyond that (I've seen some copies go for over $100).  There are some I can bid on that start around $30, but in my experience, for something like this... it never stays that low for long.  And yeah, games nowadays are around $50-$60 range... which is the problem with being somewhat of a tightwad who hates to pay too much for games.

('Suppose if I want this game bad enough, I'll pay that price.  Besides, even for that much money for a used game, I'm sure this game is still more worth-while than most of the games released nowadays.)
