It's the bridge from Amsterdam to the Java Island in the harbour of Amsterdam! It's the island where the ships to Indonesia arrived and left! My mother lived on that Island for a while with her parents. All the old buildings are gone now and it's a part of Amsterdam now. People live there.
We lived in the real island of Java, in Indonesia. That's why this bridge is important to me.
I hope you'll understand what I mean.

No we don't speak indonesian at home, but my father (my mother died last year) loves to talk about Indonesia and say things in bahasa indonesia!!! And I love to listen to it!!! He's got great story's about his life there. And the things we did when we were living there as a family! It's always in my heart! And when there is a pasar malam here we always go there to enjoy the people, music, danses and of course the delicious food!!!
Since I left Indonesia round Christmas 1957 I've never been back there. But from 1961-1963 we lived in Bangkok, Thailand.
And my greatest wish is to go to Indonesia some day and travel to the places I've been!
Cannot remember anything about Cirebon, where I was born. But I lived in Jakarta after that.
One of the houses we lived in was on Jalan Bulungan 16. Remembered that.
I love to see all the photo's taken by Indonesian DA friends!!! I have got lots of books with pictures, story's and culture of Indonesia. And also hats, woodwork etc.!! My heart is still in your country!!!

and it has been a very very long time since you left indonesia, many things have changed.
i went to cirebon for first time last month to attend my friend's wedding.
cirebon has a high temperature, it's hot.
along the road from indramayu to cirebon (may be you remember this town) there is Pertamina's oil refinery.
unfortunately i didn't take any photo there, just take few photos in indramayu (a tree's shadow).
i'd love to hear from you how is cirebon and indonesia before 1957
oh, i just knew that indonesian word "dagh..dagh or da..da.." (bye bye) is a word in bahasa belanda.
(i still get confused to say belanda in english: dutch, netherland or holland?)

Indonesia is very much alive in our family. Both my parents were born there too, like me. My mother was born in mid-Java Banjubiru and my father was born in mid-java Semarang.
No I don't remember Indramayu. I wish you had taken pictures of Cirebon!!! But when you were there you didn't know me yet.
I will ask my dad about Cirebon and Indonesia before 1957. He will know alot more about it than me! I remember it was quite dangerous in some places for belanda's. But my father never have been in danger, because he was a good friend of all the indonesian people. They always helped him to be safe.
"Dag" is indeed bye bye. (da..da.. is the same as dag dag)
Dutch is our language. The Netherlands is Nederland. Our country. And Holland is the western part of our country, but lots of people just call our country Holland.
In our family we still use words like: pisang, ketimun, udjan panas....
When I was a little girl I could speak bahasa indonesia, but unfortunately forgot it. Only remember some words. Anjing, tolol .....

i only learned about VOC and been told a little about orang belanda who were friends in school/at home,
because my grandparents didn't study at belanda school, they studied in chinese school.
but i know few orang belanda and they all are "pastor" (father in catholic).
two words you remember are still often heared here, everyday..

My father didn't go to a belanda school, because he didn't want to. I bet the older people in Indonesia still can speak some Dutch. Older people here in Holland who lived in Indonesia still talk in bahasa belanda. Sounds so nice.
We love to go to an Indonesian restaurant to have the real nasi goreng with sate.
